About
The Popes' Palace is the most important monument of the city of Viterbo and it has become a symbol . It was built to mark the transfer of the headquarters of the Papal Curia in 1257 by Pope Alexander IV . Raniero Gatti strongly wanted this building and also built a large audience hall, now known as the "Hall of the Conclave" for the fact of having hosted the first and longest conclave history. Another characteristic part of the Palace of the Popes is the Loggia of the blessings (better known as the Loggia of the Popes) built in 1267: it overlooked the Pope coming from the Hall of the Conclave. Recently it reopened the sumptuous hallGualterio. The Palace is included in the tour circuit of the monumental Polo Colle del Duomo: free of charge with the purchase of the ticket is the audioguide in five languages (Italian, English, French, German and Spanish) that will accompany you in the discovery of all the areas you can visit.

Besides the really wonderful arched outer wall and the magnificent architecture, we were able to visit only a terrace (gorgeous view on the surroundings) with a fountain. Maybe it needs more readings...

I had no idea of the importance that viterbo played in papal history other than the fact that one pope moved there from the Vatican. An imposing cathedral that contains some really interesting artefacts. The walk to the cathedral is down some very higgledy pigeddly winding streets which give off a medieval almost sinister air. Take your time and let your imagination run wild. It felt strange sight- seeing something that plays an active part in people's lives.

Not very necessary to visit the Museum, if you are not very into Pope's history. Probably a nice look outside coul be enough.
And you can simply enjoy the surrounding nice Place and view.

It was interesting to learn that the idea of a conclave was born here. Just lock up the cardinals and wait until they found a solution. Would that work with politicians too ?

The complex consisting of a lovely piazza with a fenestrated loggia looking out over the country side, the palace and the Cathedral are all very interesting and not on the popular tourist map , but together with the whole town (once so important as it was the papal seat) is crying for attention

It is unbelievable to see the preservation of this building and the medieval area of san Pellegrino. The Popo left the Vatican only twice in history and one was to move to Viterbo for a while. This event made this town rich in stunning medieval architecture and not only. A must see.

It was very surprising to us to learn that this was the location of the longest ever Papal Conclave ( in the 13th century). Church was meeting states head on in a very unstable period. The official tour of the Palace and Cathedral cost 9 euros each, was in Italian, which a A4 handout in English - an essential item. The tour allowed access to two halls, including that of the conclave. These were worth the visit for the historical aspect, but the piazza is visually more impressive.

The Cathedral is beautiful, inside and out and having an English speaking guide was a plus. Having been raised Catholic, I was blown away by the history. In Catholic school, I was never made aware that Viterbo was once the seat of the Papacy much less the site of the first Conclave. The Palazzo is a MUST SEE when visiting Viterbo.

This is must to be seen, especially church with medieval oil painting. Not worse than St. Peter Cathedral treasury and without any guard. Like it!

Constructed in the 13th century by order of Pope Alexander IV, he moved the papal seat here for about a quarter century. It became the location of the Curia, college of cardinals, who were tasked with electing the next pope. After lengthy delay and much consternation by the city's residents, they elected Pope Gregory here.
The palace is located on Piazza San Lorenzo along with the cathedral, the bell tower and the museum.
