Such a lovely square. We visited on a late May evening. It was magnificent with trees dotted all over to offer shade during hot sunny days.
Would love to come back during the day to eat in one of the many restaurants

Piazza Fontanesi is a beautiful piazza with plenty of trees for shade. The day we were there was hot so sitting in the shade enjoying a meal from one of the restaurants along the piazza was lovely.

Visited in a sunny Sunday, was full of locals. Still, a quite peaceful place (if you don't mind for the kids fouling around :-) ) with many trees and interesting buildings. Great place to have an Italian coffee.

On a Saturday morning, the piazza is a bustle of activity with stalls selling organic products. People mill around or sit in the cafès lining the piazza drinking coffee or aperitifs. It is magic!

a small French square full of trees and benches, a small bistro, restaurants, pantterei and salumeria, sometimes in the summer with good jazz music. A surprising Reggio Emilia.

This is the most comfortable, relaxing and quite place during the day and night, except the Saturday, cause during it locals sail their own products, which is so fantastic and fun. Around the Piazza you can see a lot of small coffee houses and restaurants, shops, old palaces, nature. Like it very much.

During the day, Piazza Fontenesi is a great place to visit - many small shops and restaurants. Summertime, in the evening - especially on "Pink Wednesday" - there is entertainment. Great entertainment and open seating ... bring your bicycle or just walk over ... sit or stand. The restaurants around the piazza are open a serving good local specialties and drinks. Enjoy!!!

Consider that Reggio Emilia is not such a great city, architecturally speaking is boring and out of the many Roman towns in the region (like Ravenna and Modena ) is the ugliest one. This is of course my personal opinion, but many visitors feel exactly the same. The climate is most unfortunate, damp, humid, extremely hot in summer and foggy in winter and what is worst is the pollution, one of the strongest in Italy, so much so that it has been compared with Bejing's. However, Piazza Fontanesi is one of the nicest place you can find here. The square was once home of junkies and drunkard, but it has now been revived and a wonderful selection of bars, restaurants and bistrots have a found an interesting setting to trade. In summer Piazza fontanesi is full of people and in winter many events are organized to keep it lively. Also, every saturday the square is the host of the farmer's market, so you will find a lovely selection of local produce and breads.

I liked drinking in squares at night here. This square was one of my favourites as it had shade from trees and plenty of people to watch.
