Founded by Greek colonists, the ancient city of Poseidonia dates from 600 B.C. It was abandoned for centuries, but the remarkably well-preserved Greek temples were excavated in the mid-18th century.

- AnnaH8 contributionsMario is the bestWe did a tour at the temples of Paestum with Mario. He is so passionate about his job. He tells lots of back ground stories, explaining mythology .. The tour lasted 2 hours but we could have spend all day with him. He made this beautiful ancient place coming to life. Best guide we’ve ever had!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 October 2023
- TravelNowSwUsa419 contributionsGreat Greek and Roman RuinsA very short (one stop) ride on the train from Agropoli. The train costs 4 euros 80 cents per person round trip. Free restroom in Agropoli but they charge 1 euro for the restroom in Paestum. Free restroom at the Museum in Paestum BEFORE you pay to enter. Just go down the stairs to the left as you enter the museum before the ticket office. I was told by an Architect many years ago that Paestum had better Greek Architecture than many places in Greece and that it was easier to reach. Don't know if that is true but this place was amazing. You can see the buildings without going in but it is quite the experience to walk in and see them up close. Went during the week in March and there was hardly anyone there.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024
- JollyChadMinneapolis, Minnesota82 contributionsGreat TemplesAfter staying in Positano, we decided to do a day trip with driver to see Paestum, and then a Mozarella farm. Paestum was beautiful and manageable for a few hours. I maybe liked it more then Pompeii, which can seem overwhelming in size. i really was mostly wanting to see the three temples, and they are grand. The rest of the grounds were so so after seeing many ruins on a trip. The museum inside was pretty lackluster and maybe 30 minutes for us. Worst bathrooms on our whole trip. The doors didn't lock in the mens stalls which was insane. And for the amount of tourists, can't handle the people. All in all it is pretty, but really far from the Amalfi Coast. About 1:45 hour each way. If you only have 1 or 2 days and this would be a full day, I'd probably skip it. Depends on your timing.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 June 2024
- James C47 contributionsWorth going if you canReally liked this place, we missed the train to Naples due to a delay getting to Salerno and decided to go here instead Got off at Paestrum station then a short straight walk to the site. No queues to get tickets from the museum The site is large with some very interesting temples, that you can get close up to The museum was good too.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 August 2024
- sarah sBrentwood, United Kingdom151 contributionsTotally amazing !!!Amazing amazing amazing! We came here just to see this archaeological site and it was truly jaw dropping. I have never met anyone who has been here and yet it is probably more incredible than Pompeii, just in terms of its size! Cheap to get in ( 15 euros each and hardly anyone there in mid August) and there is a brilliant museum across the street.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 August 2024

The temples are impressive, the other ruins not so much. It definitely would be worth a stop if driving through, but as an excursion by train from Salerno I'm not sure it was worth the effort. As with many cultural sites nowadays, much/most of the museum was closed off.

Best preserved Greek temples I have ever seen. There are three temples to be seen, the wall of the city, parts of an amphitheater, etc. and lots of ruins. When we were there mid July there were only few people. Quite surprising as this is really worth a visit. Very different from Pompei and Ercolano. The museum is also worth to be seen and the entrance fee is included in the ticket already. We needed 2.5 to 3 hours.

It was great to return to this excellent little site. My wife and I visited here a number of years ago and it was so hot all we could do was scuttle from one piece of shade to another. This time we had a wonderful autumn day, lots of sun but not the heat. The site is small enough to manage in a couple of hours and there is plenty to see with useful information boards. They also have a new guidebook for an extra fee; we didn't bother with this though. Also included in the price is a small but interesting museum and it is also worthwhile having a look inside the church. You don't get the crowds you find at Pompeii and Herculaneum which makes for a pleasant visit. One word of advice, if you arrive by train turn left when you get to the site as that is where the entrance is. We turned right and ended up by the exit and had to retrace our steps. there are also a number of decent eateries by the site and a few shops.

I love ancient history and had of course visited Pompeii and Herculaneum - but I hadn't even heard of Pasteum before a holiday in Sorrento. Unable to hire a car and unwilling to pay the extortionate prices of organised trips, I was almost put off going by the tales of the journey involved (ie train from Sorrento to Naples then onto Pasteum then return: c. 7 hours in a train in total). However, it was absolutely worth the effort. I would tend to agree some of the other comments about poor signage and I was disappointed that an audiouguide didn't appear to be an option but I bought a 4€ guidebook from a nearby gift shop and that was all I really needed. The fown itself doesnt compare with it's two rather illustrious near neighbours - but then neither have those have a temple in extaordinary condition, let alone 3 of them! In fact, I would say the site is worth seeing for the Temple of Neptune alone. One cannot help but wonder at the ingenuity of the Roman's for having the ability to design and build a structure as wondrous as this some 2500 years ago. I'm marking down due to the afore mentioned lack of signage/info and audio guide - and the rather disinterested staff on reception who were more interested in continuing their conversation than admitting customers. As for the site itself though, amazing.

Paestum is about an hour south from Salerno by train and 1.5 hours from Naples and sits on the coast in Southern Italy. The key features are three Greek temples that are very well preserved and date back to 600 and 450 BC.There are other sites as well and an excellent museum as well as a small town designed for tourists. There is about a kilometer walk from the train station to the site. This was well worth the visit.

We arrived by train from Naples. We walked around the outer walls of the city to the entrance for about a half mile. We had not ended up with nearly enough time, but the grandeur of the ruins was still impressive There are three distinct temples left by Greek settlers and many other ruins around the ancient settlement. The Romans conquered the town and adapted it to their use so there are Greek and Roman ruins. Because of time, we were unable to go to the museum, included in the price of admission, but just outside the walls of the city. The archeology is ongoing with more and more parts of the town being discovered all the time. Clearly a must see.

The visit to this archaeological park including museum was definitely worth the travel time from Castellammare di Stabia where we based (about 90 minutes by coach). The temples and their history is really impressive. So is the story of the developing Roman town and its final decline. Spend time walking round and through the various structures to get a real feel for centuries of life BCE and CE. Don't miss understanding the town walls and gates with the various Roman public structures. The museum was only partially open which appears to be the norm.

These temples are just impressive. No other words come to me. We visited this after seeing Herculaneum and Pompei and I have also been to the Acropolis in Athens and these three temples are much more impressive. To realize the age of these and that they are still standing in quite a complete condition is mind blowing. You do feel so small next to them. Really a great visit for the history lover. It is only about an hour and a half from Naples, so not a bad trip at all. The village right in front of it has places to eat and shop and the corresponding museum is worth it too. The rest of the grounds are a lot of ruins that aren't much to look at, but there is an amphitheater on the grounds too so be sure to see it.

Ruins of Greek temples in unbelievable condition dating back to 600 BC. If you’re lucky /early you could have the place to yourself. Walk along the ancient roads among the foundations of this once major city of Magna Graecia. It much more tranquil than Pompeii and other worldly. You can lose yourself here contemplating time. The museum is interesting too especially the frescoes from La Tomba del Tuffatore (The Tomb of the Diver). Highly recommend.

Unbelievable. 2 hours in line waiting to buy tickets. People en masse waiting outside. No information whatsoever. Incompetent staff. Unless there is a more professional service I recommend NOT to go or just watch the temples outside, they are perfectly visible. A shame for Italy

How do we travel there on public transportation from Salerno? In June 2024

Hi, I plan to visit Paestum in Oct 2023. I just want to check the hours of operation. Is the Paestum Archeological Park including the museum open everyday from 9am to 7pm? Are there usually long lineups if I buy a ticket upon arrival? Otherwise, can I get the official website where I can buy a ticket online?
Written 13 October 2022
Hi Ronee, Just found your question. Best to check open hours on the web if you can. The CampaniaArtecard lets you skip lines and visit many sites in the region. There was no line for the archeological park when we went there. The museum was partially closed and had a line at mid-day. Go early or late to the museum to avoid waiting.
Stay overnight in Pompeii to get to the ruins before the tour busses.
If your trip includes the Amalfi coast we can strongly recommend the Agerola Paradise Resort hotel above Amalfi. The views are incredible and it is above the main action. You can take a local bus from Amalfi (cheap). Take the ferries between cities on the Amalfi coast.
When we were in Italy they were very strict about proper Covid masks. Have fun!
