A beautiful chapel on the right side of the Orvieto Cathedral. The decorations by Luca Signorelli and Fra Angelico, centered around the statue of the Virgin Mary on the altar, envelop the viewer with the murals and ceiling paintings. It is in very good condition.

The Chapel of San Brizio opens onto the right transept of the Cathedral of Orvieto and represents one of the main artistic beauties it contains. The pictorial decorations that entirely cover both the walls and the vaults are truly splendid, begun during the fifteenth century by Beato Angelico but mostly completed by Luca Signorelli, with scenes referable to the Last Judgment. A visit not to be missed.

This Cathedral is huge. As you approach the enormity of the building hits you. Bearing in mind it was built hundreds of years ago up on a hill top; how they did it amazes me. Step inside and the abundance of frescoes will keep you looking around for hours. Well worth a visit.

Known since the times of Dante, what is more interesting is society going to hell than in heaven. The same idea is visited in the chapel of San Brizio. The only scene of hell Sermon and deeds of Antichrist. The frescoes on the ceiling belong to the brush of fra Angelico. The good society of the apostles, angels, bishops and martyrs written by the Italian painter carefully. All that You have seen many times before. There`s the true pearl of chapel and Cathedral in general, it is the frescoes by Luca Signorelli. The seven frescoes by Signorelli in the chapel there. These are Sermon, the Destruction of the world, the Resurrection of the flesh, the Damned, the Elected, Heaven, Hell. Their importance to the world of art is that they inspired Michelangelo in the Grand work in the Sistine chapel. But Signorelli was the first who was able to portray the human body. Signorelli has always paid great attention to anatomy. It was said that his school was at the funeral. The artist was able to convey the dynamics of the naked body as well and is even better than antique. The Renaissance is manifested in this. There is a perception that Signorelli depicted the Friar in the image of the Antichrist on the mural of the Sermon. Despite all his talent, Signorelli revenged Savonarola. It reminded me again, as in the Raphael`s Stanzas gorgeous scene from the film of Giuseppe Tornatore "Baaria".Visiting artist decorated the ceiling of the local Church religious scene, taking as the sitters for the saints of the local "characters", so to conduct the services was impossible: instead of having to listen to the sermon, the congregation whispered, showing each other up at the ceiling:"He portrayed the drunk in the form of St. Peter! Where have you seen? And that angel is my brother, he recently had surgery in Palermo. — And how? — Well, thank you...". We look at these scenes from a distance. While Signorelli painted an imaginary hell, but real, of his life. In fact, as we are.

Phenomenally beautiful chapel inside the Duomo of Orvieto. Get a small guide (free at the entrance) to explain some of the art. Look for the artist in the paintings!

This thing is so gigantic. And beautiful. We stayed at a hotel right next to this and it was awesome. I loved the sun shining on the gold facade. So much to look at.

THis is a great place to eat. We enjoyed it so much that we went twice. Small, but nice ambience. Food is excellent. Good house wine. I hightly recommend it..

Goodness gracious how many Apocalypses did I see as I toured Italian churches? Many, but none in as much closeup detail as the San Brizio chapel in Orvieto's duomo. I was told that this set of Apocalypse frescoes was known to Michelangelo and informed his Last Judgment paintings in the Sistine Chapel. Maybe, maybe not; if not this one then there are plenty more throughout Tuscany and Umbria. What made this chapel noteworthy is its combination of detail and close-in-ness; I didn't need binoculars to see all of the detail. A favorite image: A scene of the General Resurrection with skeletal men forcing themselves out of the ground and putting on themselves new skin, new faces, resurrected bodies; I found the scene to be remarkably biblical and a welcome medieval response to out modern Gnosticism that denies our fleshiness.

What a BEAUTIFUL Duomo! The sheer height makes it appear larger than it is but the colors and art are just amazing. It’s a must see when in Orvieto
