Orvieto was the first hill town we visited. We eagerly climbed the tower. The stairs are easy to navigate though there are many of them to reach the top. The view is 360 and totally worth the climb.

Torre del Moro is one of the few places you can easily climb and get a view of the town of Orvieto. The entrance is located on Corso Cavour close to the intersection with Via del Duomo. The unassuming entrance leads through to a Monadori bookshop where the attendant punches your ticket. The Torre del Moro is part of the cumulative ticket that Orvieto offers visitors for its attractions. If you staying a few days, then this ticket is very worthwhile.
There is a lift to the second floor where you can view the original mechanical clock mechanism. From here you climb about 186 steps. The steps are made of polished wood and are generally well lit. It is an easy climb. You pass the clock faces before reaching the balcony. The tower is 47 metres high and oriented to the four cardinal points. You have beautiful views over the Duomo, Corso Cavour, Palazzo del Popolo (when the market is operating on Saturdays and Thursdays) as well as the wider township and valley. Sometimes you can hear music that is played in one of the restaurants floating up to you.
Be prepared for a surprise when the bell tolls every fifteen minutes. It can come as quite a shock. The bells are no longer manually operated but by electronic devices. The bells themselves are interesting to view after your ears have stopped ringing! The smaller came from the tower of San Andrea and the latter ffrom Palazzo del Popolo. It has the coat of arms of Ponclelo Orisini who had the bell cast, together with the symbols of the 25 guilds of the city at the time. Unfortunately with time, many of these symbols (small to start with) are wearing away.
It is well worth the effort and you are likely to be able to enjoy the scenery on your own as many people do not take the time to visit it.

I could not convince my wife to make the climb, so off i went by myself. I had not purchased the Unica Card, so it was 5 Euros to visit the top. It was a beautiful day and having a 360 degree view of the town and the valley was breathtaking

The view from the top of this tower is amazing and refreshingly inspiring. We observed the ferie d'agosto parade to the Duomo from the tower. A truly fantastic experience. The Italian countryside is visible for miles from the top and it is also a great place to get that special sunset picture of the Duomo. The climb is fairly easy (there is an elevator that will take you the first two levels if you need it) and takes about 5 minutes. The cost to climb the tower is minimal and there is a senior rate. The Torre del Moro is a must for visitors to Orvieto.

It's 240 steps to the top, and those risking their hearts will be rewarded with great views in all directions, including the duomo and the hills beyond. The bells chime every 15 minutes, which can take you by surprise given that the clock was 5 minutes behind when we visited. The wooden stairwell itself is modern and you'll spot the ancient postholes of the previous structure as you ascend. It's worth every step of the way, as this is one of the highlights of the town.

we walked up the steps to the top of the clock tower and it was so worth it. What a beautiful view - 360 degrees! We stayed up there for quite a while and there were several visitors, but not a crowd. Definitely do this. It's pretty quick and you'll regret it if you don't.

From Torre del Moro you can see all the beautiful Orvieto and the fields around.
It’s worth all the stairs (around 150).

There are two reasons to go up the Torre Del Moro....
Firstly, as everyone else mentions, it is the absolutely amazing views. They are 360 degrees and are a great way to see Orvieto and the surrounding countryside.
The second reason is to scare the living bejeesus out of anyone with you when the bells start ringing. We completely forgot it was a working bell tower, and I was sitting right in front of the bell when it rang for the first time and i almost jumped off the tower in shock, it was hilarious.
Probably best then, if whoever is reading this doesn't tell anyone else in the group about the ringing, and you head there 5 minutes after it chimes at 45 minutes past, good luck!

The Torre del Moro was an inexpensive and uncrowded delight in the middle of Orvieto. The clock tower chimes every 15 minutes, and if you're at the top when it goes off, it can be startling. We timed our trip to be up and down between chimes. The views from the top were very cool in all directions. There are also some historic items on display in a side room on the way up. This did not require a lot of time, but it was a good thigh burn to climb to the top.

Not a very busy touristy place and THAT is what makes this special. The views from the top are just spectacular. I was there alone and spent about an hour just admiring the views of the town down below as well as the hills in the distance. Peaceful and quiet - it's a fantastic place to watch the sunset without any obstructions!
