We went to see this strange deep well with my husband and our 3-year old son. To visit the well you need to walk all the way down and then back up again. It was worth the visit - something I have never visited before....More

Tucked away near the Funicular station. A double helix staircase is very impressive. Not much to see, but the temperature change on a sweltering day was very welcome. You do need a reasonable level of fitness and mobility to handle the steps.

I had read about the well before visiting and was not disappointed. To be fair, there is not a lot to it but the structure is fascinating. It consists of two spiral staircases previously used by animals to bring up water, the staircases being arranged...More

Don't miss the deep well of Orvieto. The stairs going down in a helix never meets the stair going up. You descend from the light into darkness and up again. Great perspectives when looking through the arches of the stairs. Advice: Don't drive through Orvieto...More

As you wind your way down to the bottom of this pozzo, you can only imagine what life must have been like for these people. There's two stairs that wind up and down which were just paths back then, one to go up and one to go...More

Very interesting well (I know, I didn't think they could be interesting either!)- but do get the audio commentary for €1. Lovely and cool at the bottom of the well but only go if you like descending and climbing stairs

Intriguing ancient well built to guarantee the city's water security in troubled times. Fascinating design. Absolutely well worth seeing. Be sure to get the audio guide which is cheap and excellent. Don't go if you find walking stairs too much of a challenge. The walk...More

We walked to the pozzo from our hotel, which is a bit of a walk since the pozzo is at the end of Orvieto. We got there pretty early in the day and there weren't a lot of other people (I can imagine it's a...More

Since it's a double helix design, you won't run into people going up when you're going down. I'm a bit claustrophobic, but I had no problem. There's plenty of head room, and the "windows" to the shaft provide light.

A long winding stairway down and a repeat coming up. A masterpiece of engineering by Etruscans to acquire water. Cool temperatures but not especially exciting beyond its engineering.
