Splendid kissed by the sun, austere when you arrive on the Piazza del Duomo because that grandeur is hard to enter all the look. It takes time to process that magnificence. And then an uplifting stop at "The King's Innkeeper."

Beautiful and different t from the car park and then throughout. Mixture of stairs and mainly escalators take you through the rock to the town. Once there you have many beautiful streets to walk around full of restaurants and bars. Great ornate buildings topped of by the magnificent church. Not to forget the many great views of the local area

We stopped in Orvieto on our way to Assisi on the Greenline tour. I’m glad we did stop here though I wish we’d had more time. Orvieto is a charming little town on top of a hill. To get here we had to take a team up the hill & then a bus to the central piazza in front of the Duomo Di Orvieto. There are lots of artisans & craft makers in this town. Ceramics seems to be the most prevalent here. We went into some gift shops here & was amused at the amount of Harry Potter & Game of Thrones souvenirs. Anyway I would consider coming back here in the future on the way to Assisi.

We love to stroll through the streets and visit the local crafts and seeing them work. There was craftsman making a leather bag, not mass production cheap leather. His shop had some beautiful work made by him.

First of all this is a great Italian hill town, period. Great views, very clean and very medieval in nature. Lots of great shops if you are into that.

Now, if you very lucky you will go on the Corpus Domini weekend. I would recommend you spend the night as you will see. If you are into medieval things, dress, history then be at the Duomo about 4:45 PM on Saturday to see the procession enter the church. If you miss that make sure you are there by 5:30 when they come out and then a 1.5 hour show begins ; costumes, flag "dancing" etc. Then they go on a specific routes through their neighborhoods where you can catch them again as the procession winds through town. This all ends about 7:30. Expect a lot of restaurants to be closed or reserved for special groups. Just take any major street and walk away from the heart of town and you will find many options. Unless you are into kids of various ages running relays then give the 9PM at the Duomo event a pass.

Sunday , this is the big deal. If you are Catholic/religious then get in the Duomo by 0830. Otherwise wait outside the front and watch the various religious groups arrive and then go inside with military like precision.

I would then make my way to the Plazza del Popolo by 0945. At about 1000 it all will start. This will be amazing and will take 45 minutes or so for the whole group to pass you on the way to the Duomo to pick up the religious players, the relic and the religious standards. I would get a copy of the map that shows the route they will follow. However, if you just go to the Plaza Republic before you know it all that you have seen will come before you followed by the religious group as the whole procession winds through the old town. It will take them about 3.5 hours to get back to the start point.

I don't know how they do it in the heat. They are all very serious and very into their job/duty. The costumes and actions are worthy of a Hollywood movie. All of this is free.

Make sure you do other things in this amazing town per your interests. Parking will be a challenge especially on that weekend.

TLDR: A must visit if you're in the area. (Don't use the public bathrooms though)

This town is incredibly scenic, perched on top of small mountain with sheer cliff faces. There are walkways, that I highly recommend, that allow you to walk up theose cliff faces and take in the views.

The center has maintained it's medieval aesthetic well. There are sightseeing trails, maps available and signs in the street for those that want to see as much as possible. There is plenty to do, and I can't recommend the cathedral enough.

You could easily spend a day here, just enjoying the streets, not to mention the views of the surrounding landscape, the food and museums.

The public bathrooms need a refresh. It costs 50c to use which is fine except... Men's toilets often don't work, taps don't work, there's no toilet paper akd the chipboard toilets seats have warped from all the urine they've soaked up. What am I paying 50c for?

Overall, a must-visit if you're in the area.

The strict and elegant at the same time the main square of the ancient city strikes with its greatness. The whole town on the rock is a pearl of the medieval architecture.

The trip from the funicular takes you through the streets that lead to the Duomo so you get a feel for the centro storico of Orvieto. There are many cafes for a cool drink or snack, restaurants tucked into narrow alleys, art galleries, antiques, gelato shops, clothing and souvenirs . Orvieto has a unique type of ceramic as well in a traditional turquoise and white pattern. The Piazza has a great museum across from the Duomo. It is an interesting meander.

We did a great deal of exploring in Orvieto and would go back again and recommend it to others. It is a magical place with incredible views in all directions, beautiful architecture, great restaurants and friendly residents. It is very walkable and everytime you round a corner there is another visual surprise!
