About
Since 1972 the estate has been owned by renowned entrepreneur Angelo Jacorossi, renowned entrepreneurs. Talosa was one of the first wineries in Montepulciano to undertake the quest for fine quality which brought this appellation to the heights of Tuscan and Italian winemaking. The main ageing cellar is in the old town centre of Montepulciano, in an underground area between two of the oldest buildings called Palazzo Tarugi e Palazzo Sinatti. He Talosa Cellar date back to the 16th century and visiting them is like stepping back time. The brick passageways contain a series of vaults and niches where the barrels are placed. Visitors to this magical place automatically assume an air of respect or even reverence for the force of history pulsating these walls. The winery applies this same respect and reverence to cultivation of the vineyards and production of the quality wines.

The advertising for this tour was very misleading. We thought we were visiting a vineyard based upon the photos. It was a wine shop. When we arrived at the destination, there was a sign on the shop for free wine tasting, where they discussed the grapes and production. But when it was our turn to participate in the tour, we got the intro, but ended up in the crypt (where dead bodies were buried below), and having lunch in a dark cold damp creepy place was very unappealing. I kept thinking we were going to move on and to the brightly lite restaurant above. When appetizers came, the cold cuts were not fresh and the pasta was overcooked, making the food taste gluey. People who chose to do the free wine tasting and then go for a paid lunch in their restaurant, probably had a better experience and atmosphere to enjoy the experience. I asked why didn't we have our lunch upstairs? He didn't have a good answer for me. We felt very ripped off and basically paid $116.00 for a terrible lunch for 2. We had four wines to taste same as the people who had free wine tasting. We would like our money back.

I booked a red wine tasting at Cantina Fattoria della Talosa - the organisers were very kind and allowed me to change times at the last minute. It was 25 EUR for tasting 4 montepulciano reds, some bread, and a tour of the cellar. Our group was about 10 people from different countries and conducted in English and Italian. The 4 wines were interesting and ranged in prices.
Unfortunately, the tour was rushed and the guide spoke very quickly when explaining the history which was a shame. Also with the wines being explained in italian and english, it took double the time it should have done. It also would've been helpful to know which wines paired best with different types of food / occasion. Some of the visitors on our tour had paid 35 EUR for the same package but it included a few pieces of cheese and ham - for the extra 10 EUR I wouldn't say it was worth it.
Overall I enjoyed trying 4 Montepulciano wines in a local cellar but would have appreciated a better explanation of the production process and detail on the wines we were tasting.

Our tour company arranged for us a visit to this winery for some winetasting. It was a very enjoyable visit. We were greeted outside on the street by the staff, end then were led down into the caves and the historic wine cellars filled with giant barrels. Very impressive! The history of the winery, and the winemaking was described to us with passion. The winetasting area is clean and pleasantly furnished and we enjoyed tasting several samples of wine, accompanied by some bread drizzled with olive oil. There were very clean bathrooms available on the premises

Our tour group enjoyed a wine tasting in the lowest cellar of this wine maker where an Etruscan tomb was found. Only one level above is the area where the wine ages in huge casks. Our tasting included 4 wines with most of them being made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Our favorite was the Reserve since it was the smoothest.

You can barely walk around the small and ancient, hilltop town of Montepulciano without tripping over wine-tasting cellars. This one is in the centre of town, just off Piazza Grande. We visited at the end of the day and although you can book a tour, they kindly let us walk in off the street and do a spur-of-the-moment wine tasting.
We sat at the counter and the chap who poured the tastings chatted, taking the time to explain each of the wines to us. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable tasting session and we left with a few bottles.
He also encouraged us to walk through their historic underground cellars. Winding stairs took us down into deep faults and passageways, beneath Montepulciano. These underground tunnels were carved out of the tufa stone by the ancient Etruscans and are lined with enormous oak barrels. 6th century Etruscan tombs were uncovered here. Those with eagle eyes can also spot sea fossils, lodged in the tufa millions of years ago but, sadly, I missed them. The whole thing was very atmospheric.

We were referred here by our Italian friends from Cortona. Upon arriving we found the tasting room was full so we decided to do the self-tour first. We travelled down many flights of stairs, made some twisting turns, went through a small tunnel and down some more stairs ... at the bottom we were greeted with cavernous underground space where the walls looked as if they'd been scooped out with a large spoon. The wine barrels were numerous and immense, there was an entrance to an Etruscan tomb (not accessible) and fossils of plant life and animals embedded into the walls and ceiling. Talosa is one of the oldest wineries in Montepulciano and the barrels are between (and under) two of the oldest buildings in the city. We learned a lot during our tasting. Chianti is meant to be enjoyed immediately, it is not intended to be aged. We loved the Rosso di Montepulciano and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The wine is quite reasonably priced so we bought a bottle to have with dinner that night.

My daughter and I made our way to this Winery because of Rick Steeves. It is a historic cellar and if you climb down the steps to the lower level cave, you see how wine barrels stay the perfect temperture. Also, you get to see the seashell fossil walls. It's worth the walk down. Very cool that this is in the middle of a semi-mountain.
Back up the stairs and it's tasting time.
The gal at the counter gave us a wonderful wine tasting with 6 wines. She explained the differences between EGT, DOC and DOCG. We ended up liking the 7Euro DOCG. It was fantastic. Very nice Winery!

When we first pulled into the heart of Montepulciano I first thought that maybe I had read Trip Advisor wrong, and that this wine tour was outside the city like a typical vineyard. When I walked into the petite front shop and was greeted by the friendly bar attendant and assured that our reservations for 7 people was ready to go I was surprised, and didn't know what to expect.
This tour was the BEST thing we did all trip! Not only was the staff incredibly funny and super knowledgeable about anything we asked, but they provided a one of a kind experience in the OLDEST wine cellar in Italy. We went deep into the earth with lots of stairs (with a toddler that they entertained all along the way) and it was unlike any vineyard tour I have ever been on.
We were then taken upstairs to a large table that was already set with a FULL complementary feast. They called it appetizers but it was full on home-cooked Italian dinner, and every last morsel was delicious. Despite having three grown men at the table, we ate our full and there was still plenty left to spare.
The wine itself- divine.
Every single wine, but especially the Nobile and the Vin Santo was excellent. Before we knew it we ordered cases to be delivered back home in Massachusetts, and at a price we couldn't believe our eyes at! The bottles were half the price of the other vineyards we went to.
Afterwards we were in the heart of the cute town and walked around enjoying the afternoon with a warm glow.
If you do not go to this wine tour you are out of your mind.

There are a large number of wineries with tastings in Montepulciano to choose from. You can do several in one day if you don't mind walking. That is what we did and we are glad we did. Each offers its own unique experience and Vino Noble wines.
Our personal favorite was Talosa. The wine cellar offers an interesting self tour and a great place to cool off on a hot, humid day. There are pictures from local events that are hanging among the wine barrels. Nice touch in an otherwise been there, done that cellar.
The real stars of the Talosa are the people, not the wine. I can not remember the names of the two people that hosted the wine tasting. One was a lovely young girl originally from Brazil. She had a very good command of the English language and was very knowledgeable about the region and Vino Noble wine. We left the room with a much better understanding than any other tour or tasting. There was also a native gentleman there with a good sense of humor and general overall knowledge of wines. Together they made our experience very enjoyable.
Note: there is a windy staircase leading down into the cellar. Some of the steps are small for those with big feet.

We made an appointment for a tour and wine tasting. Andrea was our host. We've toured many cellars and caves, but this one was interesting because of it's age and history; there are actually Tuscan ruins down below. We had a private sampling of Talosa wines; really enjoyed the Nobile Reserva. Everything was done right. Wines are available for shipping; we bought some and ours arrived within 2 weeks. Be sure to make an appointment; easy to do via e-mail.
