Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had seen the country in the guide of the most beautiful villages in Italy but I found nothing beautiful. The church was closed, the colour of the houses evanescent; the visit to the castle was then terrible. After paying 10 euros for admission I find a guide who can not even say the cost of the ticket in English (with us there were Germans). After visiting the ground floor of the castle (where I found a room with 1980 furnishings!!) I am led to an internal courtyard where the guide tells us that if someone has trouble climbing the stairs or walking can wait for the group in the courtyard. I, having problems, have been waiting in the yard. Of course they could have notified me before and maybe made a reduced price since half the visit was precluded.

We went on Sunday afternoon to visit the Castle. We had a Guide, Mrs. Paola, VERY PREPARED.
His explanation made it all fascinating, engaging and ultimately, with the explanation of the ghost of the fairy Bema, fantastic!
Thanks and congratulations again to Sigra Paola

Very beautiful and well-preserved castle, also considering that it is private property (it's a shame not to be able to visit the garden). Fief of Guido Torelli, captain of the Visconti family, in 1400 (many Visconti coats of arms still remain). Half-empty rooms, but thanks to the skill of the guides, highly trained and enthusiastic, you can relive the atmosphere of the time. The tour of the guard walkway is also nice. The only (big) flaw is the visiting hours, which include a 3-hour interval between midday and 3pm. The town is very small and offers nothing special, there is only one bar.

My wife and I visited the Castello di Montechiarugolo, complete with its moat and bridge, with our Globus tour. Although the high walls of the castle are partially damaged by the ravages of time and war, it is still imposing and quite beautiful; the remaining gardens are meticulously manicured. It was fascinating to see where the archers shot their arrows through slits in the walls and where boiling water and oil were poured on invaders and to learn about the legend of the fairy Bema, a gentle ghost for young brides.

We learned that the castle was constructed sometime between the 13th and the 15th century (depending on whom you believe). It’s strategically located on a high point over the Enza river valley. Prior to World War II, the castle had been used as a fascist detention camp and later as a jail for prisoners of war during and after World War II. There is even graffiti left by prisoners still visible on some walls.

The large rooms and hallways were brightly decorated with stunning frescoes and intricate mosaics. We enjoyed a magnificent view of the Enza valley below from a loggia on the outside of the castle; that loggia was decorated with even more gorgeous frescoes and mosaics. The castle is still partially occupied by the current owner’s family, so it wasn’t possible to tour the entire castle. We enjoyed watching a little girl and her grandmother playing in the courtyard garden; unfortunately, though, when they saw us watching them, they went back in the castle. We immensely enjoyed every part of the castle that we were able to see.

We were on a tour so our guide arranged our guided tour to the castle. It was amazing. There were dates that were written on the walls starting from the 1300's with people's names on them. So much history here...It was really a great visit. Something we probably would have never found without our tour. We visited in September of 2014

I visited this castle with a friend... to say it was wonderful is an understatement!! Well preserved... expertly explained and told by the guide Paola... who illustrated and guided us through the rooms of these historic walls... .which still have a lot to tell... given that it is owned by a family who lives inside...

The castle of Montechiarugolo is located in a small village in the Parma countryside. Even seen only from the outside it is imposing with its high walls and tower and towering above the structure, it is certainly very beautiful inside too.
