Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lerici is dominated by its castle which was built in 1152 with constant additions up till 1555. It is an excellent example of Castellan architecture. It can be reached through a tunnel near the restaurants on the waterfront. Here there is an elevator which takes you to the ramparts.
the 180 degree views are spectacular and make the visit worthwhile. Admission to the castle itself costs 5 euro.
If you are travelling by car do not park in the town as this is a restricted area and heavy fines are issued. There are private parking areas just outside of Lerici. It is a short enjoyable walk on the promenade to reach the town.

From a distance the Castle is fairytale, the closer you get the more it loses its charm. There are many stairs that reach it from 4 sides, but also a free elevator that works only in the morning. From the castle the view of the Gulf of Poets, Lerici, Portovenere is something unique.

The Gothic-style Lerici Castle is a jewel in the Gulf of Poets from which you can admire a spectacular sea and despite having had several transformations over time, it seems to have been built exactly as you can see it now. Reaching the Castle is not tiring and the cost of the ticket is low. Definitely worth seeing.

On a Saturday morning stroll in Lerici, decided to get up to the castle/fortress
I thought could work out this by stairs, so making a bit of exercise.
Not possible, as work in progress at ground level.
So you take the elevator, located inside a WW2 air raid shelter tunnel.
Once you are up there is a very nice view all around, you get to the several outer platforms, then the entrance.
You are requested to pay 5 Eur. I asked what to see inside, they said rooms empty as that was a fortress not a castle lived in.
A bit surprised, but nevertheless fond on looking at the architecture I went in with the visit, paying the entrance fee.
The current lay out has changed the internal face of the fortress, new "floors" added where kind of meeting rooms are set.
The nicest place was the small gothic chapel with the nice carved vaults.
Ascend the stairs and you are into the square, not yet into the fortified tower.
Access forbidden due to repair (no one tells you in aforehand)...
With interest vanished I asked the personnel at entrance, I was answered that it will take long for maintenance.
All in all a hollow fortress, better to keep walking outside along the wall, killing the time with nice photo shooting of Lerici and La Spezia gulfs.

Avoid going to Lerici as much as you can, get a fine of €78.10 if you pay within 5 days for the Primacina tunnel ZTL gate which you would never dream of finding before a tunnel! Not to mention the parking is all paid and unobtainable. The beach is closed because rotavirus was found and the sea waters are muddy. Country for residents where tourists are treated like rotten fish in the face

just today I received a fine of 78.10 euros for having passed through the Primacina Gallery. the signal is not placed at the right distance and is very difficult to see. Maybe they will need money from tourists as usual, nothing new

The view from this castle is terrific and we also enjoyed the town. The colorful collection of buildings makes for a great photo op. Then find the elevator that takes you to the top of the ramparts. We did not go inside the castle but don't think we really missed much. The bay is lovely and the various islands are very picturesque.

Beautiful castle dominating the port , it was built in 1241 by Pisans during the war against Genoa.
It’s over the hill reached by little picturesques streets inside the ancient city

My partner stayed here in 1970, when it was a youth hostel run by an eccentric woman named Madi. She had a checkered past and was part of the Italian Resistance in WWII.
I can imagine the expenses to maintain a castle and Madi ran into the same problem. In addition, the local politicians and Madi had their disagreements over the years and eventually they won. She got evicted and it went into disrepair until a local 12-yr. old boy found fossils in the water.
It is now the Museo Geopaleontologico. We're seniors and the cost for entry was €8 for two persons. It's interesting if you are into that type of thing. The displays were average. We were visiting more for nostalgic reasons.
As you can imagine, the views are pretty spectacular from here. There are a lot of steps up to the castle so you should be ambulatory. There were steps down at the bottom by the marina and we climbed up. When we left we took the path through the streets down to the L'ancora di Lerici Ristorante where we enjoyed a wonderful lunch of clams and linguine and gnocchi.

If you are looking for a lovely stay in CInque terra area , don't miss Lerici ! not too crowded and really close to everything ... Really a charming place! Don't miss the beautiful 12th century castle, and the lovely restaurant right below its walls : Cicillo . We spent a week in the perfect base to explore Cinque terre area : www.villainlerici.it , just 10 minutes walk from Lerici downtown , the ocean views are spectacular ! Sunset from the pool area is stunning! not simply the perfect view and the high quality villa furnishings, but the ability of our host ( Gianluca ) to realize in advance the things that a traveler needs, made our dream holiday came true!

Ciao, quanto tempo occorre per visitare il castello?
Grazie

una mezzoretta per salire e ridiscendere alla piazza, il castello era chiuso e non ho potuto visitarlo. Puoi farti incantare dal panorama e restare a contemplarlo. Auguri.

Oh my goodness I'm flabbergasted. I too stayed at the castle in the 60s and met madi. Thank you for bringing back the memories. What a pity it is no longer a hostel.
