A short visit to this wonderful island, full of charm, history and nature.
I would like to go back every year!

Only flaw: slightly excessive prices. I probably got it wrong.
Or perhaps it follows the trend of this summer 2023 which sees prices that are too high everywhere.
With lower prices I would have stayed longer.

I was Guest for 2 nights at the moorings of the Port.
I had a great time, extremely helpful staff, I'm not Expert but no problem, they do everything.
Mrs. Eleonora who takes reservations, is very pleasant and efficient.
The only drawback is that in July and August, you have to leave the tribute by 10:30 and then return double and 17:30
I thank everyone and hope to return.

The island of Gigliio is just under an hour by ferry from the fashionalble port of Santo Stefano.

It has a tiny harbour and town plus a walled mountain top village Giglio Castello.

I went, with some friends for the day and was utterly captivated. Ferries run every couple of hours or so - local travel bureaus have the timings and the cost was around 20 Euros return. We didn't have time to stay in the port but caught a bus which connects to the ferry and runs up to Giglio Castello.

We spent a couple of hours walking around the village inside the walls. The church is particularly pretty and is open to visitors. We had arrived at the town mid morning so were ready for lunch. We had looked for restaurants, seen tw and didn't particularly fancy either of them when we found Ristorante Arcobalena - almost hidden away above a flight of stairs. The meal we had there was memorable - see separate review. During our meal our very friendy host (Francesco Carfagna) invited us to see his vineyard on the unspoilt West of the island. It was absolutely beautiful. The vineyard was only bought by the family in 1999 and currently produces 5 - 6000 bottles of white wine and around 500 bottles of red wine annually. The white wine is stunning and only sold to a couple of outlets - their own restaurant "arcobalena" and Il Pellicano in Monte Argentario. The red wine is currently not sold ( although I was given a bottle as a present to try in 3 years time!!

The family arrange concerts in the vineyard during the summer and will also do meals there - to watch the sunset whilst eating "Arcobalena" food and drinking their wine would be a very special experience. See the website www.arcobalena.net

We were driven back to the ferry by Francesco Carfagna - a fabulous end to a memorable day trip.

Giglio is a very charming island with a lot of sights, good food and things to do, but in this review I will only focus on the possibility for a very nice day on the beach if you want to get away from the overcrowded mainland beaches.

Take the ferry from Porto Santo Stefano (Euro 23 return) and hop on a beach boat to Caldane beach (10 minutes, euro 10 return). When you arrive at Giglio, the Costa Concordia is of course a disgrace, but the port is pleasant and with the short boatride to Caldane you get to a small, beatutiful sandy beach, surrounded by cliffs and green forest. You can rent a sunbed and a parasole (euro 10), or you can stay on the beach og the cliffs for free. Crystal clear water, lovely surroundings, not overcrowded!

Bring your own food and drink, there is no cafe or restaurant on the beach. There´s an Alimentari and a pizza/ sandwich shop in the port where you can buy what you need before you hop on the beach boat.

My wife and I took a day trip to visit Giglio Island while in Porto Santo Stefano. It is a very easy ferry ride from the dock in Porto Santo Stefano. Tickets round trip are 20 euros pp and the ferry ride is a beautiful slow ride that last about an hour. The ferry also transports cars if you want to take your rental. We chose to leave the rental behind.

The trip to Giglio is very scenic. As you pull in to the port you go right next to the Concordia Cruise Ship that ran a a ground back in May 2012. So close you feel like you can touch it...that was very neat to see.

The village itself is full of shops and restaurants. We had a great lunch and spent about three house exploring and taking photos. Our time was limited, so we did not visit the walled castle on the top of the island...I was told the views were superb. We also di not go to the other side of the the island to visit the famous beach call Giglio Campese. We were also told this was a great location. All are easily accessible from a public bus that runs hourly back and forth from Porto Giglio to Campese Beach stopping at the castle each way.

We wished we had taken an earlier ferry so we had more time to explore.

It is a great day trip and worth the visit if you are in the area.

Without exception one of the high moments of my recent trip. We hiked to the Casello at the top of the town. Had some much needed water and a glass of the local wine. Then took the bus to the beach ( accidentally). Had a sandwich and sat on the beach and enjoyed the moment. Did some shopping had a couple on bottles of wine with the group and headed back on the ferry. Great day...lots of memories!!

I took a 1 hour ferry from Porto Santo Stefano, departed at 10:30 in June. Two ferry companies operate. A return ticket is 24.50Euros.

Nice change day at the beach. Felt more remote than the other beaches on mainland. very nice water. you can see Corsica.

A bus service is scheduled to sync with the ferry on arrival in Giglio. You have 15 minutes after arriving in Giglio to catch the bus, that goes up to Giglio Castelo and then down the other side of the island to Campese beach. Campese beach is a full service tourist beach with sun beds, restaurants etc. You can walk to beach called cannelle in 15 minutes from the main town. I did notice a taxi service.

Note on travel/transport planning: I got the last ferry home at 7pm. I needed to catch a bus to Porto Ercole - it took 90 min. I had to transfer at bus stop 'terra rossa' and wait 30+ min for the bus to Porto Ercole. If I got the 5:15 ferry home I could have got a direct bus, and the trip is 39 minutes

quick ( but not exactly cheap) ferry trip from Porto Santo Stefano, we took our Motorcycle along for the day. got to see the wreck of the Concordia, which is not only a blight on the landscape, but also ALMOST landed in the harbour.. a sad but awesome sight. We were greated by a quaint harbour town with many little nick nack shops and eateries.. very touristy. the trip to the fortress atop the island was great, Breathtaking views. the highlight is the small village of Campese, beautiful beach, great place indeed. worthe the trip over, if not to stay even longer!

Of course I want to say that I came here to view the costa Concordia wreckage. I did. It is horrific. But ht island is charming and I had a nice time collecting sea glass and having lunch. It was a nice ferry ride from Porto S Stefano. We did not ferry our car and wish we did to explore more. Friendly people and town.

This little island is a place to see by anyone spending some time in Tuscany. Most common way to get there is the ferry from Porto San Stefano but there are smaller tour operators going there from other places (more to the north, i.e. san vincenzo).
The port (Porto Giglio) is a nice place with the best nutella ice cream I've ever had in the gelateria right at the port exit. A few hundred meters from there there is the bus station where you can take the bus to Giglio Castello and Giglio Campese, a beach with small rocks on the other side of the island. Castello is an absolute must-see, every corner is astonishing, must be one of the best in the 'small medieval town'-type sights. Campese is OK as well, nice beach but there are probably even better ones, which can be discovered by boat or foot - unfortunately we did't have time for that. Next time I would go for a couple of days, probably on the first off-season week of September.
