Castello Estense is an absolute 'must visit' when you are in Ferrara and is at the very heart of Ferrara's history throughout the ages. If you want to know about Ferrara, visit here first, it's all there! Exhibited are well displayed with good explanations throughout. You won't be disappointed.

The castle is the heart and soul of the city, and life around it is constantly vibrant. A trip through the castle is well worth the time and minor expense, and you'll get a small glimpse into the construction of the building and history of the historic center. The dungeons are quite interesting, although, like much of the castle, they... More

The Castle Estense is the most imposing of Ferrara's Renaissance buildings, worthy of being the city’s symbol. Children especially enjoy the chance to imagine what it would be like to live in, and defend, such a fortress. Surrounding this huge structure is a moat filled with pea-soup green water, which is aeriated fortunately, considering the smell and the insect habitat... More

Another, highly advertised art exhibition was on elsewhere in Ferrara, so, wishing to avoid the crowds, we decided to visit a more modest one at the Castello Estense. The edifice itself is massive but recently and superbly restored. We went to buy tickets (very reasonably priced) for the exhibition, and discovered that it covered a tour of the castle itself.... It is a very well maintained medieval castle. All the explanations are in Italian. Go up the tower, it is worth the extra euros, the view is gorgeous!

If you have only a few hours to spare in Ferrara then visit the Castello Estense. It is a 25 minute walk from the railway station but there are buses available. The bus fare is a fixed price so have some loose change available.

This castle sits proudly in the centre of town. It is really incredible. It has a drawbridge and moat on one side (not far from passing traffic!). The other side backs up to a town square. It is a beautiful structure with a very interesting history. We wish we had had more time to spend here. It is the centrepiece... More
