- Claude MVence, France967 contributionsInteresting site.We visited the Duomo and got the tickets to visit the towers and roof. Minor disappointment, the mosaic in the nave was in restoration, so we did not get to see it. The views from the towers are interesting. The inside of the church is very plain and austere. In a way the outside is more unique, very reflective of the Norman influence on the island.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- Susan KNew York City, New York1,093 contributionsIf you like mosaics- it is known to have the most elegant one in SicilyWe visited this free UNESCO World Heritage site-as part of our walking tour of Cefalu. It looks like a fortified castle. It was built between 1131 and 1240 by the Norman King Roger 11. The attached cloister is the oldest in Sicily. IT is opened every day from 8-12:45 and 3:30-5:45.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024
- Seeking True QualityEurope4,803 contributionsThe exterior of this Duomo is magnificentWhen we visited this Duomo some thirty years ago, we could only see the decoration of the apse and admired the mosaic of the Christos Pantocrator. The entrance and the nave were under restoration, so we could not see them. During all these years, my wife was so sad about that and we were delighted about this trip - finally, we will see the whole church! Alas, now we know that due to the shortage of money, only the altar and the apse were decorated. During this visit, we could see only the bare walls of the front part, as the altar and the apse were under restoration! Despite that, we recommend a visit to this church - it is fantastic!Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 April 2024

This prominent ancient cathedral in golden hues is a standout from various vantage points around Cefalu. It was commissioned by Norman King Roger II in 1131 after his ship found refuge at this spot during a harrowing storm. Dedicated to Cefalu’s patron saint Santissimo Salvatore della Trasfigurazione (also known as Christ Pantocrator). UNESCO listed, it is famed for its Byzantine-style mosaic of Christ Pantocrator. Besides that, the interior is magnificent in its Latin cross plan combining a trancept, cloister, arches, chapels, distinct altar and apses to create, still, a very solemn space. A must see, in Cefalu.

If you have been to Monreale then the byzantine Christ image here will be familiar. The altar here is simply breathtaking, and is a must see if you are visiting Cefalu. We had enough time to just do the church tour but there are various options to go to the church tower and such. We visited during a baptism ceremony and it was quite interesting to observe a beautiful ceremony in such an incredible place.
Pictures just do not do it justice and hopefully you will be able to immerse yourself in the visual impact of the interior. Like most Norman constructions, the exterior has the feel of a fortification. How lucky we are to be able to visit such a magnificent building from antiquity? We all felt very blessed.
Even with Covid protocols, the cathedral was open for visitation. Give yourself at least half an hour to walk through the interior and take pictures.

Visited here and chose the red itinerary which includes everything. First you visit the towers and see the views. Then you go between towers and down to the church where you see the gold mosaics - stunning, Then you visit the treasury and museum with many beautiful artifacts and finally the atmospheric cloisters and garden. All in all, a great visit.

The Cathedral of Cefalù was built starting from 1131, and it was consecrated in 1267. It follows the model of the great Cluniac Benedictine basilicas, with a Romanesque-Northern European Norman style.
The mosaic decoration was completed only in the presbytery and currently it covers the apse and about half of the side walls. The mosaics cover an area of over 600 m² (slightly less than 6500 square foot), and they were made between 1145 and 1166, in two phases. For their realization, Roger II called Byzantine masters, from Constantinople.
There is a cloister, that can be visited only in spring and summer.
Although less impressive than the Cathedral of Monreale, this Church is worth a trip from nearby Palermo: by train it takes approximately 50 minutes, and there is one train every hour.

There ia a very interesting tour which offers you the most of it, including going partly up the tower, getting in the roof and getting close to the mosaic. I strongly recommend taking that one as it also includes the monastery. A lot to see, some nice explanations and some places and angles you will otherwise not see.
A very nice interior as well, so for a relatively small town like Cefalu very impressive. Oh and do not expect too much from the treasury.

Bought and content with the cheapest ticket. Despite being and looking 70, the meanies wanted to see my passport to get age discount. Who carries their passport? It felt like residual Mafiosa policy. However, the cheapest ticket lets you see around the main and wonderful body of the Cathederal, then find the far corner entrance to the Cloister and 'treasure' displays.

As a couple we love to visit cathedrals and places of worship, having come to a fine arrangement, whereby my other half takes beautiful photos and I find a quiet place to pray.
I wonder whether the intense heat of the day and the presence of coachloads of tourists, all with their headsets (possibly a cruise ship nearby?) rather put us out of kilter with our viewing, but I felt there was something lacking here - both in terms of photo opportunities and spirituality.
The cathedral is statuesque, huge towers flanking an arched entrance, approached by some steep stone steps and then a flag stoned, low-walled courtyard. Inside the height and scale are impressive, but the decoration simple; we read that those building the cathedral wanted to go for size and, in doing so, ran out of money with which to put in decor, and this does show.
It is a cool, open space after the tightly packed town outside and the heat off the stones.
Visiting a place of worship is such a subjective thing, depending on what one is hoping to get out of it. For me, Cefalu cathedral didn't 'feel' spiritual, but that could be more to do with the crowded environment and the obvious lean towards tourist visitors; many places of worship reserve quiet areas or side chapels for those who would like to mark their visit with prayer - I couldn't find any such place here and, had I done, my review might have been more positive.

Highlight of our visit to Cefalu. This is a stunning example of Norman architecture and entrance is free. An organ playing and singing (wedding was due) when we visited added to the magic.
Check the opening times - when we visited it opened at 3pm in the afternoon. This suited us as we arrived early afternoon, had lunch in the square and then went in.

With so many fabulous churches on the island, I do regret that we basically wasted our day visiting Cefalu. Yes, it's sweet. But the cathedral is closed from 1 to 3.30. we arrived just too late to get in before 1, so spent a lot of time waiting for it to reopen. I really think we could have done something more interesting!
We did go to the washing area, which is sweet.
Basically, if you're in Cefalu don't miss it. But if you're touring and this is a detour, don't arrive just after 12.30!

Should we wear clothing covering shoulders and knees or are shorts allowed when visiting this church?

So sorry only just seen your question. It’s best to cover bare shoulders.

Last year when I went there the famous mosaics of the apse were covered for restoration. Are they free to view now?

I would love to see a Sicilian cart while staying in Cefalu. Does anyone know where I could see one? Thank you!
Written 19 March 2018
Hi,
Drive (or take a bus trip) to the "Marsala Cantine Pellegrino Winery" in Marsala where, besides trying their wine, you will see three beautiful examples of Sicilian carts in their display area.
Enjoy.

Will the Cefalu mosaics be covered in June, around the 11 or 12 of the month?
Written 24 May 2017
We traveled at the end of March. The Duomo had changed their visting hours from the hours listed in our guidebook. I would check the hours upon reaching Cefalu and plan your day accordingly. I don't think they would cover for any reason in the height of their tourist season.
Also if you plan on visiting the cloisters next door check their times as well. We were there in the off season and missed their visiting hours.

Hola Minica

Is late March a good or not so good time for a week's stay in Cefalu (we will rent a villa). Is the weather acceptable for an enjoyable stay, even if it is still chilly? Is early April much different? Thanks. John
