Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

i would recommend this tour before visiting Pompeii & Herculaneum. This visit allows you to get upclose to the fresco's and walk along the well preserved inlay floors. Wonderful visit, and in walking distance from many hotels

Along with Villa San Marcos, Villa Arianna is a must-see. The ruins are so interesting. It is free and not crowded. While they are within 15 min. walk of each other, the road is a little busy and a short section doesn't have sidewalks. I wouldn't want to try to walk to the Villa from Castellammare di Stabia. It seems like a long, uphill walk. Our hotel gave us a ride to Villa San Marcos, and pointed out Villa Adrianna on the way.
When we finished our visit, it began to rain heavily. The man working in the office called our hotel for a ride and invited us inside to wait out the rain. There is even a lovely old dog who lives there...named, of course, Arianna!

We visited both Villa’s in the morning (apparently they seem to be closed in the afternoon. Arianna is 30 min walk uphill from downtown Castellammare. It has a beautifull seaview and view on the Vesuvius. Entrance is free!
From here 30 min walk to the much more magnificent Villa San Marco, on the same uphill level outside the city . Both Villa’s are very nice to visit and different : we started at Villa San Marco what was perfect.

Off the usual locations for ruins, Villa Arianna is a wonderful site to visit. Low visitor numbers and free entry make it well worth the 90 minutes required. The site is in a great condition with lots of information. Unlike Pompeii, most of the site is open for you to walk around without placing everything behind gates.
Make time to visit them - all they ask is that you sign the visitors book.

Decided to visit this villa when it popped up as somewhere to visit. Cannot believe it’s free! The detail in the building was amazing and I actually enjoyed this better than Pompei the artwork is better preserved and you get to wonder round it fairly freely and without all the boards of visitors. Amazing

A 15 minute , one mile walk from either Castellammare or Via Norchera stations. Very helpful attendant who spoke perfect English and was willing to answer all questions. Free entry and no crush like we had at Pompei and Herculaneum. ( we were the only ones there) . Extensive complex with some frescos to rival any!

The villa lies a 20 minute walk from the trainstation. Take care to have something like google maps with you, because the route is not very well indicated. Admission is free and we were guided by two female students who volunteer here. It's a sprawling complex that in ancient times was situated on the beach. It was a luxury summer retreat. You can also wander around on your own and take it all in and appreciated the way a roman villa was constructed and how luxuriously decorated it was. There are not many other tourists around, so it's quiet and peaceful.

People on Tripadvisor mention that it is hard to find, on the contrary, take the time to look on a map on your phone like we did and 20 minutes (from the train station) later you're there. When we arrived there where two volunteer students who gave us a great tour. Because of additioning information they added value to the tour around the villa. Entrance is free and a small brochure is available. In addition to the big sites like Pompei and Herculaneum very interesting to visit.

One of the splendid Roman villas owned by the very wealthy before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. As a 'leisure' house it provided wonderful views of the Naples gulf and had areas of land to rest, relax and keep fit for the wealthiest in the Roman empire. Probably built at the beginning of the first century AD and then destroyed in the autumn.
A must for archaeology / history adventurers. About an hour is right for the visit.

Salve.

Written 23 May 2018
