Passage through time
Dec. 2017 • Family
San Francesco was built over several hundred years starting in the late 1200s. The church is spectacular with architectural brilliance only found in this region of Italy. The travertine stone is everywhere in Ascoli and was not spared when this church was built. The entrance pillars have been worn down over the centuries, as ppl run their hands over them.....the sound that resonates mimics the sound the organ piano pipes.

Modern stained glass

An enormous and beautiful church right in the main square. Magnificent stained glass windows,I was surprised by the wartime one south nazi soldiers. A quiet respite from the crowds outside.

One of the oldest Franciscan churches
Jul. 2016 • Couples
Built initially in 1300 to celebrate the several monks of Ascoli who joined San Francis, it underwent additions and renovations for another 200 years. It frames part of piazza del popolo and it an imposing structure. The footprint is the usual roman cross and it has two simple cloisters. As for most franciscan churches the interior is simple and spartan and dark. Worth a visit .

Worth a visit anytime of the year, but I chose Easter Monday, and the place was buzzing.. I don't mean the electrics were playing up either..
As you can see from the photos I took, there is a lot of history in this church. well worth a visit.

Beautiful stained glass windows
Aug. 2014 • Family
Cool, dark interior provides welcome relief from the hot sun. Apart from the atmosphere, the windows from the last century were the main highlight.

Beautiful!

We saw many churches in Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan, but this one was one of the prettiest. Go downstairs and don't miss the incredible mosaics!
