Got the 1hr train from Rome termini station to Anzio to see my grandads final resting place.
The Anzio War Cemetery is 15mins walk from Anzio rail station. If you want the Beachead Cemetary, you need to get off at Villa Claudia rail station. You cannot really walk from the beachead cemetery to the Anzio cemetery as the pathway runs out and it's a busy road to walk 2km on.
The Anzio war cemetery is mainly British and commonwealth soldiers killed at the early stages of the conflict.I believe it was planned before the battle as one of the first cemeteries.
If you are looking for relatives, you firstly need to go to the small structure at the front of the cemetery that looks like a guard box.In here you will find a book with the names listed and most importantly where they are located within the cemetery.
It's an emotional place to visit.Beautifully kept. Many thanks to the CWGC and locals who maintain it.
In here you can ponder painfully on the young ages of these brave men. Also,so many graves have the same date of death. This gives you a hint to the ferocity of the battles.
My grandad was killed early in the Anzio conflict. January 44.
He was from Lincolnshire and joined the Sherwood foresters(2nd battalion).
During the fight for Campoleone and "The Factory", the 2nd battalion(roughly 700 men) were decimated by German forces on the attack during 29th -31st January 1944.
All the officers were killed and only 150 men survived.
Peaceful,Poignant, painful,but go
Remember them.

Visited the grave of my uncle, who is buried in the cemetery while on holiday in Rome. The journey is easily done from the central train station in Rome on the Anzio train. Get off at Villa Claudia and walk 1.5 kilometres. The cemetery is beautiful, peaceful and well cared for. I was so glad I visited a much loved and never forgotten Uncle who died long before I was born. I will be forever grateful to all the brave men and women who died for us.

My Dad and I went to the both the British WWII Cemeterys ... but the one we wanted to go to most was the ANZIO WAR CEMETERY. Via del Cimitero ... we went to the wrong one to start with ... but was amazing walking around the grounds are kept so nice... was sad and amazing at the same time :( thid next part I took from a site for anyone that wants to go see it .. dont make the same misstake we done !!!
(The Cemetery lies 1 kilometre north of Anzio town just off the No.207. As the No.207 approaches Anzio an Italian Communal Cemetery is visible on a small rise to the left of the road. Turn left and drive up a small rise to a parking area in front of the cemetery entrance. Commission signs are visible.
Anzio War Cemetery should not be confused with Beach Head Cemetery which is also close to Anzio town. Beach Head Cemetery lies on the No.207, 5 kilometres north of Anzio town, and can be seen on the left hand side of the road when taking the No.207 towards Anzio.
We got to my Gramps Grave .. my Dad put flowers on his fathers grave.. the gardner there platned a plant for us .. they truly do keep You're Men's Last place in an Amaizing Conditon... To the Men that do That ... A BIG THANK YOU X

This was a special visit for 3 brothers. The nephews of a fallen Uncle, who lost his life during the carnage of February 9 1944.
We had prepared for this special visit but the magnificence, beauty, solemnity and overall feeling of the cemetry was inspirational.
Wonderfully maintained and a fitting place for the fallen and those coming to pay their respects.
I found the Cemetry everything that I had hoped it would be.
Whether you have family resting here or you wish to see an integral part of the history of Anzio I advise to spend a quiet hour or so in reflection of the loss of a generation.
The people of Anzio and War Graves Commission should take great pride in their contributions that enables succeeding generations to visit.

We travelled around Anzio to the various Cemeteries all immaculately kept.
The Beach Head Cemetery was very interesting as my friend and I both found grave stones with our surnames on, both quite rare surnames and sadly mine was the same forename.....signed up 1st April 1943 died 25th April 1944 age 19... I decided to contact the regiment but sadly they have no further information.....

Note that as you go along the highway the war cemetery comes up suddenly, and it could be dangerous rapidly turning in to park. Coming out can also be dangerous, there is little visibility as the road not wide and is lined with big plane trees.
A very beautiful cemetery and setting. The brave young soldiers who fought for us have at least that in their memory, as tribute, The walkways had pergolas with wisteria in blossom... they smelled wonderful. The layout very aesthetic.
My teenage children were deeply moved, as they walked along and saw just how young these soldiers were. And more than moved, saddened to see some soldiers were not even identified. It is important for the young generations to understand the horror of war, to avoid this happening again, and to also remember everyday how lucky we are today.
We worth a stop, just be careful coming in and out of parking.

We drove around Anzio and parked up to walk around the port and watch the local fishermen mending their nets. We witnessed the beaches of the landings and enjoyed a stroll around the main square. We then visited the English war cemetery which was quite emotional and thought provoking. Situated on a hill and overlooking the sea it had a poignant location. Beautiful maintained cemetery. Important to remember.

Have been to Anzio many times my uncle was there and it was nice and also strange to stand exactly where he stood in the war as i have a photo of him near the port and we found the spot where he stood all those years ago,the cemetery is a must to pay your respects and feel humble to the people that gave their lives for us

Hi, well there are two cemeteries from Villa Claudia To Anzio, on the road "Nettunense". For the first one the Commonwealth Military cemetery Villa Claudia is the nearest stop, if you would like to visit the one that is in this review, the best stop is Anzio Colonia. Both are at a pretty impegnative distance in term of walking. Check with google but I think not less that 20-30m walk for both from the railways station.
