Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a great little find. The kids loved feeding the birds. Food is provided for you to feed them. Would recommend going early in the morning as the birds were more active when we first got there. As it got hotter the birds stayed in the trees. It’s not a huge place so you don’t need a lot of time.

The novelty of being amongst the birds and being able to feed them is nice.
Realistically, this enclosure is quite small and if you have more than 4 families in there at a time, its crowded and the chances of birds coming to you are slim.
I'm a huge bird lover, I just can't love this place.. I do hope they make some kind of contribution to conservation or vet help for wild birds - but i'm unsure and haven't looked into it.
If you are thinking of going - they do cheaper rates for concession card holders and they provide each person with some sliced apple and live worms for feeding.
There are also some really nice boutique style stores around it, as well as cafes and a mini golf thing just next door.

Most of the birds will come and sit on the hand holding the feeding bowl or the meal worms. Feed is included in the price and you can stay as long as you want.
I would be one of the first at opening time 10am as by 11am it start to get crowded and the birds are starting to get sick of the food and attention. It only takes less than 5 mins to walk the aviary, so its not big by any stretch of the imagination. Birds (mainly parrots of all varieties, budgies, finches and silky hens. Give yourself 30 mins to really relax into it, but if you have kids I think the novelty might wear off a bit faster. Wouldnt call it cheap ($55 family) for what it is.
I wouldnt recommend it... its just too small for the price.

There are some beautiful birds who come and happily feed from your hands. However at $45 for a family of 4 who didn’t have any need to stay for more than half an hour I feel like it could be kept a bit cleaner. Also it would be really nice if there was a brochure given on native bird species or at least some information. It’s all a little bit run down but if you love native birds like our family it’s still a nice visit.

We have been in the past , and as Bird Lovers we just had to come again , very reasonable admission and you get a container of Seeds & Mealy worms to feed the different birds . There are a large cross section of Native birds , most are free to fly around this huge Aviary . Some birds are caged for medical treatment or because they are injured and there are signs explaining why they are caged . This is a huge Hit with Adults & Kids alike .

A seriously fun visit. A large high netted area where the birds have plenty of room to fly amongst the people visitors. cheap entry fee, which includes food to feed the birds,
So many different parrots and other bird species, many of which will land on you or your hand and feed out of your hand.
A great place for kids to visit
Most enjoyable !

The owner of this place walked past my children who were playing in a park next to the Canberra Walk In Aviary, swore at them, and threatened to break their arms (they are 5 and 8). At the time they were tossing pebbles near the fence that adjoins his Aviary, but given that the fence is over 3 metres high his birds were in no danger.
Both children were crying in terror and shaking in fear. When I'd managed to calm them down a little, I visited the front counter of this place to question the man about his behaviour. It turns out he is the owner of the place. He stood over me and yelled that he would threaten my children with physical injuries again if he caught them anywhere near his aviary with rocks - then he ordered me to leave.
As Lieutenant General David Morrison, Australian of the Year, so famously said: "the standard you walk past is the standard you accept" - I feel compelled to ensure that all parents are aware of the behaviour of the owner of this business. I would not take my children anywhere near a place where the owner not only believes that threatening physical violence toward small children and women is acceptable, but that he perpetuates this behaviour as a right.

Firstly keep in mind I couldn't be much more of a bird lover so am a little biased. It's difficult to find, set amongst the middle & back from some old fashioned tourist trap type shops/cafes. Think admission was around 11 dollars australian for an adult for which you get a plate of sliced apple & little tub of mealworms [not sure if they're alive but they could be, they're within a sawdust looking material so they don't crawl out onto you]. We went around 3pm which seemed to be late enough for them to have become hungry again, well especially those greedy, demanding, gorgeous rainbow lorikeets :) From the start one jumped on hubby's shoulder & started chewing on his collar & preening his hair, actually freaked hubby out a little until I coaxed him off [after getting a mild bite for my request], they know what they want & go for it. There were the lorikeets, beautiful quaker parrots, beautiful & affectionate [http://media.apnarm.net.au/img/local_classifieds/2015/05/04/6020627aa-ro6vv93rcv0zytf54k2_t300.jpg], cockatiels [so strange to see them outside the house], king parrots, doves, finches, etc. No cockatoos. Not a massive range but decent enough. A blue quaker parrot sat on my shoulder for ages, not even hungry, just content to sit & listen to me & hubby talk around him, I know the 'content scrunched up look' from my birds at home & he seemed that way to me, sooo sweet.
It's not a huge area [nothing like the Hong Kong aviary for instance so don't expect that scale] but seems well large enough for all of them, sometimes they'll all just simultaneously take off on a startle flight which is impressive to see. There's a giant net set high up covering the whole place but on the way out a lady informed us that there were tears here & there letting some wild birds in for a quick opportunistic feed then out again, or sadly possibly occasionally letting some of the birds Out which I thought was a bit sad [if they're used to being taken care of & then somehow find themselves out 'on the street.' Apparently it's very expensive to repair & the budget's not up to that. Anyhow you just try to see who's hungry, when they are they'll say hi & let you know quickly. It's best to let them use your hand or arm as a steady base when they're trying to balance & reach in to feed from the bowl so keep in mind they can't feed easily without a steady weight under the bowl or by basically using you as a human stand, unless some on ropes or chairs etc will let you hold out a piece of apple. They do seem to eat a lot of apple but it was reassuring to see a whole flock of cockatiels eating out of a giant bowl of vegetables as we left so there must be a more varied diet provided than just the apples & mealworm treats.
Keep in mind if you have any uncertainty about birds or have ever seen Hitchcock it could be a bit confronting as it's loud & they're literally around you [or on you] a lot. I saw a child get a fear bite when trying to pat a bird [not severe but might still be a shock] so hopefully staff give brief tips to parents but I'm not sure. Also there's not really any visual info/signage on the bird types unfortunately, not that we saw. It's just a natural ground with dirt &/or some mud depending on weather so be careful not to slip [staff seem to sweep up excess apple & debris regularly]. I'd recommend dressing really casually for comfort & to avoid dirtying any good clothes, also birds could get really friendly & poop on you, some seem aware not to, some not, so be careful. And if you want to take photos would be better to do that before you engage in feeding as your hands are going to get a bit grubby from that point on.
Overall I'd really recommend it, on your way out [or in, same thing] you can buy bookmarks or beautiful postcards with bird images & there are some for sale as well out front & near reception area. Most of the birds seem very people friendly [even people dominant, such as the rainbow lorikeets :)] & it's nice to see them without fear & being taken care of, they all co-exist fairly peacefully as well. Basically if you love birds you should love this.

Beautiful lorikeets are clearly used to being hand-fed and will hop onto your shoulder (or head) if you look sufficiently like a perch. Huge open-air aviary, mostly small parrots; most are friendly and approachable, however the young woman at the front desk needs a minor attitude adjustment.

Hi Trangie,
We were thinking of taking our 2 year old grandson (who has always been fascinated with birds) to the Walk in Aviary this weekend. It is forecast to be possibly wet and windy. Do you think it a suitable outing for such a little one, and I'm wondering if the aviaries are under cover, in the event of showers?.
Kind regards, Liz

Hello, The bird aviary is a must for children who love birds they can feed them and some land on your shoulders a child will be facinated, But there is not much covering whilst walking around it's an open out door Aviary and if it's raining I would cancel it for another day. Take care regards Marianne.
