- Mike BMineral, Virginia1,026 contributionsSlea Head is Worth the DriveOne day, on our 12 day Ireland coach tour, we were driving the Dingle peninsula. It's absolutely worth spending the day on the peninsula. But it's also worth going to extra distance and making it to Slea Head. The road gets more narrow, and you're literally driving on the edge of a cliff. Very scary, especially when you're in a full size bus coach. But if you have a driver is skilled and knows what they're doing, it's definitely a "must do". The scenery down there is amazing.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2023
- KarenM1_101,043 contributionsNot to be missed! We are so happy that we had an opportunity to do a tour of Dingle by bus. There were many people that were doing this on their own, but it was nice to sit back and take in the beauty without determining where the next car stop was located. I would suggest a tour, preferably a small group that could easily maneuver some of the smaller car parks. This drive is breathtaking and worth doing, especially on a clear day.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 October 2023
- Anuj_MithaniMumbai, India4,517 contributionsMemorable road tripThis is a stunning drive, and in my book, has the edge over the more popular Ring of Kerry. There's some great scenery to be enjoyed, so do it slowly - we kept pulling over to soak in the views or stopping at some of the beaches, historic harbours and cliff viewpoints (incl several Star Wars filming locations en route). We did this over 3 hours at a leisurely pace, before taking the Connor Pass and heading onwards to Doolin.Yes, yes and YES! Although the Ring of Kerry is stunning (No denying that), the Slea Head Drive has jaw-dropping views that would take anyone's breath away. - tms215Philadelphia, Pennsylvania648 contributionsWOW just WOW!Get a driver, sit back, and enjoy the ride. The views are spectacular, the cliffs are spectacular, the fields are spectacular, the beaches are spectacular. It is well worth the time to enjoy this curvy, narrow, scenic route through the mountains. Stop for pictures or just to stare at the landscape through the entire ride. Shorter than The Ring of Kerry, less crowded, and a better option all aroundListen, what can we say. Kerry is life. - Mark SBryn Mawr, Pennsylvania13 contributionsDingle? Don’t miss Don Chaoin & the BlasketsIf you go to Dingle to enjoy all the charm it has to offer, and you fail to take a drive on Slea Head Drive, you’ve missed one of the world’s best, most beautiful scenic adventures. Dingle was the market town for the entire Dingle Peninsula. Farmers, fisherman, craftsmen of all sorts brought the wares and produce to Dingle to sell and to purchase supplies, food, and clothing. A drive out Slea Head is a drive through this sheep herding and fishing area. Beautiful and untouched. The sheer cliffs fighting the North Atlantic are spectacular. There are plenty of places to stop for food, amusement, and sightseeing. A place to hold and feed lambkins. While your chin is firmly planted on you chest in reaction to the sea view and what remains of a pastoral life perched on the granite cliffs, you’ll arrive at Dun Chaoin (Dunquin). This place is the western most inhabited spot in Europe. But about 70 years ago, that claim was held by the Great Blasket Island, a few miles off the coast. Dun Chaoin served as a landing spot for the island visitors, coming and going when contact with the mainland was needed. Great Blasket was abandoned in 1953 since life for the remaining population, mostly elderly, became to harsh. The story of the island is well documented, but even if you know nothing of its history, it sits out in the ocean, abandoned houses bearing silent witness to a way of life lost save for that recorded in dozens of books. Just past Dun Chaoin is the Blasket Center, a place to view the island and become acquainted with its history… very moving and well done. Slea Head Drive follows the coast and each turn of the road bring more and more astonishing vistas. Bring your camera. A tip: This is a popular drive for tourists, many of whom are used to driving on the right. Be careful and stay left. Go early. All those tour buses you saw parked on the Dingle waterfront will be loaded up, making the same drive. Get out on the road before 9am, if not you could spend your time on the Drive looking at the rear end of a bus. For the fit, this is a perfect bike ride. You’ve never seen anything like it.Wow, what a lovely glowing review! Thank you for sharing and for allowing other visitors to gain real insight and expectations for their visit. As my father would say to me growing up: You are not good. - AnthonyHudson, Massachusetts10 contributionsA Breathtaking Journey Along Slea Head DriveSlea Head Drive is without a doubt one of the most stunning and memorable drives in all of Ireland! If you're visiting Dingle, this scenic route should be at the very top of your list. The combination of rugged coastal cliffs, rolling green hills, and awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic Ocean is nothing short of magical. The drive is well-marked and easy to navigate, with plenty of places to stop along the way to soak in the panoramic views, take photos, or explore the beaches. The dramatic cliffs, views of the Blasket Islands, and charming rural landscapes will leave you speechless. Every twist and turn of the road brings a new surprise – whether it’s ancient stone walls, traditional Irish cottages, or grazing sheep dotting the fields. There are numerous highlights along the route, including Coumeenoole Beach, Gallarus Oratory, and Dunquin Pier, all of which offer incredible opportunities to explore or simply sit and appreciate the beauty of nature. The history and culture embedded in this region are fascinating, adding a rich layer to the experience. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to complete the drive – you’ll want to stop frequently to take in the views, especially on a clear day when the coastline is at its most spectacular. Pack a picnic or stop in one of the local cafés for a meal, as the fresh sea air will certainly build up your appetite! Slea Head Drive is not just a drive – it’s a journey that will leave you feeling connected to the wild, untamed beauty of Ireland. It was a highlight of our trip to Dingle and a day we’ll never forget. Highly recommend this unforgettable experience to anyone visiting the area!I mean... WOW! A wonderful drive with stunning scenery - lots of water, hills, sheep, beehive huts, crashing waves against rocky outcroppings. All beautiful. The Gallarus Oratory was a special stop - an 8th century rock place of worship or perhaps a place to rest. It is a very long walk (maybe 300 meters) from the parking lot to this beehive building. However, you can open the gate and drive to a small parking spot if you have difficulty walking. The path is rough gravel. The stone work is extraordinary and the location is very rural and quiet. There is no charge.

Our group of five friends had a private three hour tour of Slea Head Drive on the Dingle Peninsula. Driver guide Caoimhe picked us up at the port of Dingle and was excellent at showing us the highlights of the scenic Slea Head Drive. She provided insight into the history of the area and present day living in Dingle. Our group was very pleased with the tour experience and highly recommend Caoimhe and Begley's Shuttle Bus Tours.

This has to be the best drive we’ve done and with every turn there’s something different. We did the Connor Pass on the way, then to turn onto the Atlantic Ocean rugged coastal road with waves crashing agains rocks and lots of turns to the actual coastline to get closer to the sea, this is a must. Far better than the ring of Kerry drive.

Absolutely beautiful place. Take your time and make sure you do the whole loop. Follow the Wild Atlantic Way signs in a clock wise direction from Dingle. Will be busy in summer. If you are in Kerry to do the Ring of Kerry then this is a must. Not many tourist bus’s on the whole trip simply because they can’t get down some of the roads.

Make this drive a part of your Ireland itinerary, especially if you are an early riser. My husband and I got up at dawn and took off for the Slea Head Drive and Dun Chaoin Pier. We were able to watch the sky awaken with the sunrise and experienced the ever-changing colors and light of the morning sky. The air was crisp and clean, and we marveled at the sea meeting farmland and rolling hills. Because it was so early, there was very little traffic, and the entire drive was easy. Shout out to the very nice farmer who let me into his cow pasture to take a couple of pictures!

This drive is an absolute must. We went during March 2022 and just so happened to get the best weather in Ireland so it made it all the more enjoyable. The views around every corner are breathtaking. Such a fantastic drive and lots the stops to pull in and take in the views of the Islands in the distance. We started on inch beach with a lovely swim in the Atlantic ocean and then around to explore dingle and then onto the slea head drive. Finished off with a sunset drink (unfortunately a soft drink for me) in Begleys bar. Would also recommend Tigh TP for a drink too. So so worth it.

While the Ring was disappointing (see separate review) the Slea Head was magnificent. We drove very slowly along the route and used suggestions from the internet for stopping etc. The principal reasons I believe the Head to beat the Ring are visual and experiential. Nothing on the Ring compares to the seaward and landward views on the Head drive, nothing. The long turn around the actual Head offered many places to stop and gaze at the wonder of creation. And what surprised us (not being ones for stopping at every touristy exhibition) was the Blasket Island Experience (it may be called something else but you can't miss it on the western most point of the Head drive). We had intended to go to Greater Blaskett but the sea was too choppy for us. The exhibits at the Experience are really interesting and prior to visiting we knew like zero about the island. On the north side of the drive is a stretch where you can view the Three Sisters and the surrounding peaks and beach. If I could only do one peninsula drive I'd do the the Slea Head drive. Admittedly we did not get to to the Berea peninsula drive so I cannot offer a comparison. We felt the Ring was overly hyped and not up to the hype or our expectations.

We'll be visiting in mid-April and considering hiring a driver for Slea Head. Is it worth hiring a guide? Or is it not so bad at that time of year. I don't want either of us to miss the sights focusing on the road ...
Written 1 November 2019
You will be absolutely fine without a guide if you plan the things you want to see (Gallarus, beehive huts, etc). The roads are easy enough to drive (a few are very narrow) and if you see something you want to explore or photograph, you can easily park alongside the road in most places.
On the other hand, if you get a good guide he or she could add a lot of local flavor to your trip.
My advice: give the potential guide a call and ask what they offer beyond just driving you to the sights and then decide based on their explanation and personality.

Is it possible to comfortably do the Slea Head drive and take the ferry to explore Blasket Island in a day without feeling too rushed? (Weather pending of course.)
Written 4 March 2019
Certainly, as long as you're not making stops along the way. Depending on the time of year, you may want to go straight to the ferry and then after the island drive the Slea Head. Plus, if you have time there is a fabulous Blasket Museum we went to the day before that really enhanced our visit to the island.

Hi, Joe. What would you like to know about this attraction? Some notes state to drive counterclockwise and other notes stated to drive clockwise. Do you want to meet busses or possibly be behind them.
Written 16 July 2018
We drove with the busses. We left a bit ahead of them around 8:30 they did catch up because we pulled over a lot. It is nice to get behind one occasionally because the roads are narrow and they clear the way since cars have to yield to busses also you’ll be on the water side for this wonderful drive.

What were your favorite stops along the Slea Head drive? We're driving it ourselves and don't want to miss anything!
Written 30 March 2017
We stopped near Ventry at the Relics of 1845 Famine and then the Prehistoric Beehive Hut Fahan Group. Great sea views, cool buildings and grazing animals add to the experience. Head to the Great Blasket Centre. It is a beautiful building with wonderful views of the islands. There is a nice cafeteria there. Drive it on a nice day and pull over often to take it all in.

Does anyone know how far this is from center of Dingle? Miles and time? It looks like about 7-8 miles?
Written 1 March 2017
It is basically a big loop leaving from and returning to Dingle. You need to give yourself a minimum of 4-5 hours to do it justice.
Written 4 March 2017
Should we drive this or hire a driver? We already have a car and we like to drive. Money not an issue. We plan of doing Dingle peninsula and Ring of Kerry different days.
Written 16 February 2017
We drove the Slea Head Drive out of Dingle last October. No issues. Plenty of places to pull over and park and take in the wonderful views.
Written 17 February 2017
Does anyone know of a little coffee spot up on the hill in the middle of nowhere on the slea head drive. It had the most amazing view but I so regret we didn't stop.
Written 30 August 2016
I think you might be referring to The Stonehouse Restaurant. It is a special spot--and yes more of a cafe. Next door is a little visitor center. My father's childhood home is right up the hill behind this restaurant (which has not always been there) and the people there were very helpful in assisting me to be sure I found his old home. A great spot to stop along Slea Head drive for sure.
Written 12 June 2017
Is it safer to drive clockwise or counterclockwise on the peninsula? remember being told to go with the direction of the bus tours, so that you don't have to squeeze by them.
Written 13 August 2016
Hi,
clockwise out from Dingle along the coast and then back over the mountains.(See my review)
We saw a camper van that had to turn around just south of the Blasket islands because they could not get through due to the volume of oncoming trafic and the width of the road.
They had to revese for hundreds of yards to get space to turn around.
