Very impressive to see this Mosque. We advice you to take a guided tour so you have someone who can explain everything you see. If you are planning to visit make sure you arrive early and take apron 1 hour to see the whole place.
After the tour we went to the visitor centre where we could ask all questions we had about the Mosque, the Islam and the Koran. It was well worth the visit!

This is a beautiful place to visit. It is not open to non-muslims on a Friday though, and women must be totally covered including, wrists, ankles and heads. It comprises many buildings but the men's mosque is especially wonderful. Very large and great if you are a keen photographer. The patterns on the walls are exquisite.

This is a massive Mosque in Muscat, and is I believe the only one open to non-muslins. It was built about 2001. It houses the largest chandelier and carpet in the world, I was told. It ia well worth a visit.

The Grand Mosque is really a must when visiting Muscat. The architecture is very nice and it is full of nice spots where the light and a beautiful decoration play a big role. We had the great luck of visiting it with Bader (@toure_oman) a friendly local guide that showed us around and answered all of our questions. He also suggested some places to eat which we really loved!

We visited the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque as part of our city tour. The tour was made all the more special because our guide did not overload us with information. He simply guided us from area to area and gave us a little bit of information and then developed our understanding of the buildings and grounds by answering our questions.
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque buildings and grounds are very large and impressive. In the grounds there were very nice gardens with lots of flowers in bloom. The outside of the buildings were finished with some decoration (carved stone work). The main feature on the inside was the prayer hall. Here there were a very impressive carpet and chandelier. The decoration on the inside was very impressive. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque buildings and grounds are well worth a visit.

How long should I allow for a visit?

About an hour to walk around but getting in could take an hour because it is a hike from parking to the entrance and then it is necessary to walk through the mall to get to the mosque itself.

I know the mosque is closed in Friday. However, is it possible to 'drive by' or to walk around the gardens?
We only have 1 day to visit as part of a cruise
Thanks

Drive by is possible. Visiting the gardens no, as they’re inside the paying area.
Even though it’s not comparable with the inside, you’ll certainly also enjoy some of the architecture from outside.

Есть ли официальная информация, что дети до 10 лет не допускаются непосредственно в мечеть, а лишь на территорию?
Is there official information that children under 10 years old are not allowed directly to the mosque, but only to the territory?

Добрый день! Не знаю, была без детей, но если мне не изменяет память, то детей я на территории не видела. Вероятно данную информацию надо искать на сайте мечети.

Is it easy to get from the Cruise ship terminal to the mosque? Our ship offers tours but they are around $130 each.

Altrimenti devi noleggiare all'ingresso una tunica adatta. Comunque la moschea vale assolutamente la visita. Noi abbiamo contrattato con un tassista una somma di 100 euro per una visita totale di Muscat per 7 ore. Non perderti il Souk vicino al porto. Buon viaggio.
