Cold, snobbish and unwelcoming
Sep. 2020 • Couples
This Château visit was booked through the Office de Tourisme et du vin in Pauillac.
The Office staff were very kind and professional.
The tour cost €25 for two adultes.
There were 7 people in the tour, 4 French and 3 English.
We understood the tour would be in French but were told he would explain anything we were unclear about. Another english man asked if he could try not to speak too fast, but the guide refused.
We dis not expect a translation, rather just a little patience. There was little or none of that.
The guide appeared bored, resentful and was reciting a script he showed little passion for to the French and the English.
There was lots of talk about how rich the business is and how big and famous.
It was a huge industrial production with over 80 hectares.
Pristine and disinfected stainless steel and concrete.
Occasional questions were answered in English begrudgingly.

When it became clear that we were unlikely to buy wine at €150 per bottle, we were dismissed, as were the French visitors who did not buy either.

I do not recommend this if you wish to understand the passion at heart of the Medoc or of wine making., there was none on show, only snobbery.

What a shame, we left feeling frustrated and unwelcome... and not rich or good enough to walk on their terroir.

Dear Sir, Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it. My name is Clément, I am the one who received you at the Château. As I remember our conversation at the begining of the tour, I told you that the tour would be in French as it was schedule at the Touristic Office. Besides, I also remember that your wife told me that she would make a translation for you since the other English man assured me that he could follow it in French. Moreover, I recall when we were on the top of the tour that I made a full part in English because your wife had difficulties to translate. Also during the entire tour, I did my best to respond to all your questions, in order to make the tour clear for everyone, respecting the timming. I'm really sorry that you could'nt enjoy the tour fully, in spite of all my attempts. Finally, I would like to add, a little thing, next time when you visit winneries please make sure to pay your tour before you leave. Best regards, Clément

Not just an ordinary wine tour
Oct. 2019 • Couples
Most of the châteaux in Bordeaux do the same thing: tell you the history of the place and its owner, show you the vines, vats and cellar, talk about the vinification process, then pour a wine or two to taste.

What made Château Gruaud-Larose different are a few things:
- our guide (Stephanie) was very knowledgeable about wines and winemaking
- the visitor centre is stunning — you get to sit taste the wines amidst the vines in the sunlight!
- you could better appreciate the wine — you’re seated on a comfortable couch and get some expert tutoring from your guide
- the cheese pairing (€15pp supplement) was very good!
- our tour (booked via email) was private — possibly not by design, but nonetheless a welcome one; my partner and I weren’t being shuffled from one place to another as part of a big group

We tasted their first label (2003 vintage — already beautifully aged) and their second label (2012, very approachable), and I ended up bringing home a bottle of their second label as a souvenir.

Great tour, fantastic wine, beautiful property, and great hostess

In general, Bordeaux does not do winery tours quite as well as Napa and Sonoma, but Gruaud Larose was the exception.

We made an advance reservation for a tour and tasting with a chocolate pairing (recommended).

The tour started off by going to the top of their tower from which you can see the entire estate (awesome view and something a little different). Then we worked our way through the vineyards and processing areas. Our tour guide/hostess was very knowledgeable and friendly and took the time to answer all of our questions. We ended back at the visitor center for our tasting. Unlike other wineries, we were served an older vintage which allowed us to really evaluate the wine as these wines typically need to be aged a fair amount of time before they mature. The pairing of the estate's first and second label wines with yummy chocolate was a great experience.

Great wines and excellent tour

This was our first experience in Bordeaux and despite having some wine knowledge we thought the vineyards here would be a little snobby or inaccessible. Wow, were we wrong with Chateau Gruaud Larose!
The friendly one on one 'white path tour' took us to the edge of the property and we given a very in-depth / casual overview of the winery. We never felt like an question would be stupid or off limits. The tour also included a walk of the production facilities and the underground cellar - which has wines dating back to the early 1800's. Unlike most wineries we visited in Bordeaux, you were allowed in the actual cellar and could touch some of the bottles. Amazing.
The tasting was great without being anything close to pushy. We were given a bonus taste of the 89' vintage which we ended up buying (so good). Overall we spent around 2 hours or so here.
Highly recommend this winery and the experience.

Visited the Chateau with a group from the Scenic river cruise. This was the best organised tour of the trip. The hostess spoke very good English and explained the whole process of wine making etc in a very professional manor, even though she was suffering from a bad throat infection! We stared the tour with a walk up to the top of the tower where we had magnificent views of the estate and the surrounding countryside. There is a lift in the tower, so all members of the group were able to make it to the top. We then toured the wine making areas and the cellars and given a full description of the production method and the barrel storage. The final part of the tour was the tasting which was excellent. Well worth the visit.

Great wines, very welcoming
Sep. 2018 • Friends
Being one of my top favourite Bordeaux wines we booked the White path tour. Our host, Katerina, was very welcoming and showed us around with great pleasure. We got an nice insight in the vineyards, the cellar and the winery. Of course we ended with a tasting of this great wine. You have to book in advance; easily done online, For us it was one of the best tours around wineries around the world we got.

Outstanding White Path Tour

My husband and I took the White Path Tour with Kateryna and were amazed by her deep knowledge of the terroir and grape growing process. We have done many wine tours and this was the most informative and well-run tour hands-down.

Must See Tower To View The Area From Above
Oct. 2017 • Business
Besides their excellent wines and beautiful historic property and castle, they have a tall modern tower, with elevator, to take you up to a lookout platform for a 365° view of their property and the beautiful area of the Saint Julien appellation.

This winery was great. First, the wine is very good - we even shipped some home. Next, our we had a great tour guide - super friendly and knowledgeable. Lastly, the had a cool new modern tasting room that included a tower you can go up in to get a view of the surrounding areas which was amazing.

Well organized tour

Visited here with friends and found tour of vineyard pretty good with winemakers open about trying to lessen use of pesticides and herbicides and are testing out some biodynamic methods. Château was really well renovated by Alcatel the previous owners. Tower is nice addition to see extent of vineyards , wine tasting was of Grand Cru standard so overall a pretty good tour.
