About

Impressive reconstruction and conservation work. In the heart of the Médoc you can discover the history of this region with this dungeon. Don't forget to go back and visit the museum, you can have a beautiful panoramic view of the roof from a height of 30 meters.

A real journey to the heart of the history of Médoc. The guide's comments were very interesting and enriching. The 1st floor was beautifully decorated for Halloween, our son loved it. Fun and pleasant visit. The archaeological objects are diverse, as are the periods covered. We really liked the reconstructions of the rooms, with this feeling of traveling into the past. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about our beautiful region.

Very interesting visit, the volunteers are very friendly and very available... they share their knowledge with great pleasure... they are passionate enthusiasts... the tower is very well restored, the different rooms are filled with objects and costumes from the past.... the terrace overlooks a 380° view of Lesparre
Don't hesitate to come and visit... young and old will be charmed
Many thanks to the volunteers

Nice place with history. Instructive about the Médoc, partly drained with the help of the Dutch.
We have not had a tour, but help from an A4 with Dutch text. Helpful young man managed to make our eea clear in his French.

3€50 for adults and well worth it.
Go back to the days when English kings were were of French descent, French was the official language at court and their possessions included great parts of France. Lesparre was a port on the Gironde and had an important castle controlling the Médoc.
Sadly, all that is left after after 500+ years is the tower and, after the 100 years war all the records were lost. However the tower has been recently restored and its 5 floors have been turned into a museum run mainly by local volunteers were they've put together a very interesting collection.
It is worth noting that there are stairs to climb and, although there are handouts in several langages, most of th labels are only in French. Don't let you put you off.
Each floor is themed, costumes, tools and trades down the ages with, of course a bias towards the wine trade with England. They've a model of the castle as it may have been and maps of the Médoc where Soulac was on the Gironde and the phare (lighthouse) de Cordouan was accessible by road.
As you go round don't forget to look at the stonework .. the vaulted ceilings, the graffiti and even the "long-drop" latrines.
I've visited many museums with more to see but, as an historian, I was impressed.

A tower is all that remains of the former castle, which was English until 1453. For a modest €3,50 one can see documents, engravings and photos of the tower's history, a very good display of tools and equipment used in farming, resin collection and viniculture until recent times. I will think hardly anyone knows how to use them now. One room is set out as it would have been in milady's time and the roof terrace has views over the town and thickly wooded surrounds. The exhibits are labelled only in French, but one does not need to know every word to understand and know what they were used for. The stairs inside are very steep and would be difficult indeed for anyone with mobility issues. The rather dark basement area is however accessible. My single criticism is that the rooms were quite dark, making it a little difficult to read the display items and explanatory notices.
The site hosts various fairs and commemorative events during the summer.
For those without cars, the tower is five minutes walk from Lesparre railway station which is also the stopping place for local buses. The town of Lesparre is a typical quiet provincial locale dominated by a tall church spire. The centre is largely traffic free with a couple of shady squares. But, as with many such towns, many shops have closed down in favour of out of town hypermarkets.
The tower and town made a nice half day out for me and I recommend it to others.

Very pleasant visit in this medieval dungeon that allows you to spend a cool day despite the heatwave and with a guide as interesting as passionate. However, it is a pity that this eco-museum is so little reported: one would expect to find more leaflets in local tourist offices and better signage in Lesparre so as not to miss this historic high place.
