Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour.A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait.

Well it is part of Wales....we arrived in drizzle and could not see the mountains for the mist and rain but the place is still spectacular. The history of the family is well presented and unlike some NT places I will not mistake this property for another one. The walk beside the strait was great even without the view. The... More

It rained and it was cold the day I came here. Luckily the garden walk was in just a fine drizzle but disappointingly the effect of storm Doris caused much of the area to be closed for safety reasons. The staff was very friendly, the restaurant did was the National Trust do and the house kept us entertained for an... More

Excellent property. Really knowledgeable guides and very friendly. Unfortunately due to recent storms grounds not open, but looked very interesting from the paths.

What a find ! In February not much in the gardens to see but the house more than makes up for it ! We were welcomed by a very knowledgable guide who directed us to , firstly the cafe for coffee! The house stands commanding a view over the Menai Straits. Inside is the story of the Marquis of Anglesey... More

A wonderful example of a stately home. The Rex Whistler painting is incredible and worth visiting just for that alone. The Gentleman member of staff who gave the talk about the painting was very engaging and helpful. The house is well preserved. The onsite cafe had a nice selection of cake to top it all off. A nice place to visit.

Enjoyable place to visit, as with most National Trust properties, probably a bit expensive for non-members (not sure as can't remember the cost) but as a NT member it was great. Good range of facilities - children's adventure playground in the woods and the treehouse were good and looked like there was a frisbee golf course for the warmer months... More

Went here today and wasn't expecting much but boy was I wrong! The house is magnificent with incredible paintings. Gardens were very grand too. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great so we could not see the mountains but still looked fabulous in the rain. Definitely worth a visit, will be returning soon when the weather is a bit better to enjoy... More

Family went to Plas Newydd today. My parents visited in the summer and were keen to take us round the house. We travelled some considerable distance - Derbyshire via parents house in Prestatyn. The website lists the House is open today (18 Dec) from 1100 to 1430. We arrived at 1100. Rather surprised to see that a sign outside the... More

Visited this lovely old house in early November. The house is full of family history and of most interest the Rex Whistler mural and many other of his works which are everywhere in the house. His connection with the family is poignant and worth researching. The grounds are lovely and the views over the Menai Straits out toward the Snowdon... More

I have given a rating of excellent because I saw the second red squirrel I have ever seen. (Encountered another pleasant couple and it was their first sight of one.) See attached picture - although I won't be winning Countryfile Calendar! Ahh memories of the Brooke Bond PG tips album with the red squirrel on the front. Obviously house not... More
