I have never visited a bookshop quite like this one! Amazing...a tall house with books galore in every room for you to enjoy. Even a small cafe situated on one floor.

This is a great place for grown ups and kids. Lots of books, a great kids room, and really nice cafe, lots of good books new and old. A favourite to go to with my daughter after rugby or a walk nearby to get food for body and soul. Staff are friendly and helpful.

A visit to Scarthin Books should be a magical experience; it has a good reputation. But i am starting to wonder if people believe what they want to believe. I have browsed, bought and eaten at Scarthin Books numerous times over many decades and each time have left feeling unsatisfied regarding customer service. Several more recent visits have left a particularly sour taste in my mouth. I won't detail specifics; it just feels that each customer is regarded with contempt and are not worthy of the superior Scarthin literati.

The glorious muddle of Scarthin keeps me coming back. True book lovers (forget that Kindle nonsense!) will not find a cosier place to spend a wet afternoon, browsing blissfully amongst the volumes. Nice veggie / vegan cafe (if you can find a table - it's small and popular.) Great setting in a pretty Derbyshire village. Not much parking in Cromford village so use one of the pay n displays down at Ark wright's Mill or the Rugby Ground fields and stroll up from there.

This shop is tucked away up a lane. Its name suggests a down-to-earth quality but it looks like a bookshop in a novel - the sort where a boy meets a girl, or a girl meets a girl, or a boy meets a boy... Their eyes meet first through a tiny gap in the new fiction section; their hands chance to brush as they reach for two different books sitting hugger-mugger on a shelf; then one follows the other up the stairs - slowly - taking time to notice the local history books and each other. Perhaps they meet again in the coffee shop - too shy to speak but bold enough to stare just that little bit too long. They laugh at the same time at the black and white cat which purrs prettily and demands room on the settle. Finally, at the tills they have to stand close to each other. Their eyes meet again and this time, they speak. A pint in the pub? To swap reading notes? That's romance.
