- msgoldenhaIrSydney, Australia281 contributionsThe tour was excellentAccess to the inside of the castle is via guided tour only. Our guide Reece was excellent, articulate, informative, interesting and was able to all questions. This is a very old castle with an interesting history. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. There are approx 30 steps up and then same to go down. In some of the rooms there were 1-3 chairs available for those needing to rest their legs (I mention this as I need to rest at times and some castles we visited have no seats available). There is a cafe, small gift shop on site. We did not visit the gardens due to timing but would like to.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- Angela S5 contributionsHighly recommended castle tour & visitWe thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon visit to Drum Castle. Immaculate grounds, reasonably priced refreshments and a fantastic play area for children. The highlight of our visit was the excellent tour of the castle by Reece who shared so much of the history of the place and its artefacts, as he guided us through each room. Sadly we didn't get to see the rose gardens as they shut at 4p.m. A truly memorable visit while on holiday in Aberdeenshire.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 July 2024
- Steven HArbroath, United Kingdom7 contributionsFull of colour- gardens are stunningThe walled garden is simply stunning. So worth going slightly out of our way on our way up north to see this. I imagine it is equally as impressive at other points in the year but August was awash with colour in the gardens. Did not visit the castle as it was such a nice day we wanted to stay outside. Really recommend.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 September 2024

We stopped here because it was in the general area west of Aberdeen where we were looking for, and eventually found, the Midmar Stone Circle (separately reviewed, and well worth finding).
Drum Castle is classic but it is 10 pounds to go inside (no senior (concession) discount), so we took a pass.
Stop if you're near but I wouldn't make a special trip jus for this.

Enquired at national trust for opening times before we went & were told 4pm.They said times had been extended for the summer season. However, when we arrived at 3.25, we queued at the admissions desk behind an American family who had already been on a tour and were making a donation. There were 2 women at the till .We queued several minutes, then when the Americans left we were told the castle was now closed , & that we had been given the wrong information as last entry was 3.15.( even in summer!!!)
I don't think I'd have minded as much if they had informed us as soon as we went into the castle, rather than have us queueing so long. Why don't they close the door after last admissions?
Disappointed & felt shabbily treated. We aren't going to be in this area again, so it was a missed opportunity.

We had a great visit here today, 20th Oct. Staff were very friendly when we arrived on such a rainy day. The tour guide was very full of information and told us lots about the castle and its history. We had a visit to the wee restaurant, the food was fantastic, very tasty and nicely priced

Our tour guide Paul was very knowledgeable and interacted very well with all the children visitors in the group. Great insight given to the Clan Irvine who resided here over the centuries, all the rooms we got to view were in immaculate condition with lots of beautiful antique furniture and artefacts around the place. The ticket includes entry to the walled garden which was very pretty but too early in the year to view all the roses in bloom. Small tearoom and shop to explore too. Overall worth a visit.

Excellent guided tour of castle, though was a bit long at 90 minutes. Should have limited numbers on each tour for comfort and need for visitors to sit during tour. There were 18 on ours which was too large. Twelve would be ideal. Visitors could have been told to wait for the next tour. There were 2 seats available in most of the rooms, but there were more than 2 people who needed to sit down due to age/health. Also there was no warning of the extensive climbing of stairs on the tour. No mention of a disabled parking space when visiting the gardens which were a distance down the road. Also we were told that 30 minutes was sufficient time to visit the gardens before our tour started. It wasn't! It would appear that a need for training of volunteer staff is needed here to make visits a better experience.
The tour itself was excellent and interesting.

Very nice castle with great, large children's playground.
Accordingly, apparently popular with families.
We had a very interesting, entertaining guided tour of about 45 minutes. Staff at the National Trust of Scotland were very friendly and dedicated as always. Definitely worth a visit! If you visit several castles etc. in the area, it is quickly worth the membership for a year, which foreigners can also acquire. Completion possible on site.

My dad is 85–hard of hearing. The (French) tour guide was horrible. She spoke extremely fast and very quiet. My dad did not hear her say anything about not touching anything. He put his hand on a chair and then she decided she could speak above a whisper—She was Very rehearsed in her presentation. She rushed us through counting us in every room—no time to take pictures or read anything. Do Not waste your time

Wonderful illustration of the development of ancient Scottish fortified towers into homes that is so prevalent throughout Aberdeenshire. Delightful fairy-tale castle (lots of intrigue & legend) with gorgeous walled garden full of colourful borders. Guided tours only - our guide was informative & coped well with all questions. Gorgeous furnished rooms with panelled ceilings & some lovely portraits. Nice café located in the attractive courtyard. Unfortunately the 13c tower part was covered in scaffolding, but work should be completed soon.

You can drive up to the main carpark then it's 5 minutes walk to the castle.

Will be there in May. Am staying at a hotel in Aberdeenshire. How far away is the castle from my hotel and what would be the best way to get there.....bus, taxi etc.?
Written 25 January 2019
Drum is the closest castle to Aberdeen, it's about 10 miles away. You can easily get there on the 201 or the 202 bus, and takes about 30 minutes or so. A taxi would be more expensive but not outrageous. It is a lovely place and you will truly enjoy the castle as well as the historic gardens. There are some nice walks to do as well.

How can I purchase tickets ahead for Drum Castle? Will be arriving there May 9, 2019. I keep trying to purchase tickets here on trip advisor but it only pulls up on the page to buy Bannockburn tickets. Also, when I go on Drum Castles page it shows prices but no where to order tickets. Is it necessary to buy tickets ahead of time or can i purchase them at the Castle?
Written 24 January 2019
We just bought tickets on the door. If there's nothing on the website about booking ahead, you can safely assume that advance purchase is not necessary.

What would be the best way to get to the Castle? Staying at a hotel in Aberdeen.....taxi? Uber? Is there a tour pickup etc?
Written 17 January 2019
You can get a bus from Union Square Bus Station which takes around an hour and you're faced with a 20 minute walk from the main road to the castle at the end. Check the bus timetables if you prefer that option. Personally I'd use a taxi - probably expensive but a hell of a lot quicker - or look at a day hire for a car - that way you could do Drum and Crathes without having to rush around - and visit Banchory village as well. If you go to Drum be sure to take the guided tour - volunteer operated and they have a huge amount of history information to impart - I'd take a car, get to Drum about 10am, do the tour, drive to Crathes (lunch at the tea rooms opposite the entrance to Crathes) and have a walk around the gardens which are very nice, then hit Banchory for a wander and a late
afternoon tea, before driving back in to Aberdeen

I am sorry to hear of your experience during your recent visit to Drum Castle. We take great pride on how we greet and treat our valued visitors to the property but it would appear that our usual warm hospitality was clearly lacking on the day you visited. If you would care to email the property so we can discuss further, I would greatly appreciate your time.

I think you might have the wrong review. We visited 6 weeks ago and gave it 5*’s saying picturesque views and lovely grounds. Staff were good too, from what I remember.

Se puede ver el castillo por fuera sin necesidad de pagar?
Written 14 July 2018
Ja, nur das Schloss kostet Eintritt und theoretisch der Garten. Da findet aber keine Kontrolle statt. Der Park ist frei zugänglich
Written 20 July 2018
Bonjour
Est-ce obligatoire de prendre une tour guidé ?
Peut-on le visiter librement sans réservation ?
Merci

How much parking spaces are there? We're coming for an event? And wondering if spaces full at castle where the nearest location to park is?
Written 18 September 2017
Yes there is a big parking, I cannot remember the cost either... I think the nearest location would be outside the castle grounds or along the alley, which are not too far, I mean you can walk.
Written 7 October 2017
Hi - I'm looking for opening times to the castle and tour prices please... Is it open during February? I can't seem to find this information - I keep getting redirected to 'The Battle of Bannockburn' tours...
Written 9 February 2017
