Both the museum and the silk mill were a very interesting look back at our industrial history. The tour guide, Malcombe, brought the weaving shed back to life with his knowledge and skillful delivery of the history of the silk trade in Macclesfield. The visit was arranged as part of a few days stay in Derbyshire, the staff I had... More

An excellent way to find out the history of Macclesfield The Silk Museum houses some artefacts from Macclesfield's history. Macclesfield was and still is a leading manufacturer of silk and silk products. In The Silk Museum gift shop you will find numerous items for sale made out of Macclesfield silk. The Silk Museum also has a coffee shop and cinema... More

Go for the combined entrance to the museum and the Paradise Mill tour. £8 for an adult; concessions available. I would do the mill tour first and then mosey around the museum as having had everything explained the exhibits in the museum would mean much more. The mill tour was great. Our guide Mike was friendly, inclusive and informative, explaining... More

The Silk Museum itself is alright and informative, but the old mill is GREAT. I've never seen anything like it. The guides are really good and it's amazing to see everything just like old days.

I am reviewing this as a museum only (without the guided tour). This is a great place to visit if you are interested in Victorian industrial engineering, or are fascinated by the history of textiles and particularly silk, or if it's raining. If you want to understand what Macclesfield is for it's quite good for that too but you have... More

This is my local museum so I could be biased but I have visited this museum a few times and always enjoy it. The museum shows you the journey of silk from moth to cloth, the history of silk worldwide and the history of silk in England and Macclesfield. It also gives you an insight into the life of the... I visited the museum to see a specific textile exhibition and decided to take a tour as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful, they had lots of knowledge about the area too. It was reasonably priced at £8 for the museum and tour. The gift shop and cafe were great and not overpriced. I would recommend this to... More

Well worth the £8 (£7 OAP rate) to see the preserved machinery and history of textile manufacturing in Macclesfield. There is a small cafe on site for a cake and a coffee. Guided tours leave the main building three times day around the middle of the day. Situated along the street is Paradise Mill, a fully preserved silk mill left... More
