Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was a surprise to find this - we were wondering how we were going to get back up into the town from the seafront and were walking towards the road that goes up. It was a welcome sight.
At the moment there are roadworks nearby meaning that you can't get up the cliff steps and so the lift is operating at £1 return - a bargain even though we only went up!

Great if you don't fancy a walk down the steep paths. Staff atm sat inside the lift taking fares of £1 return. Can get busy if alot of people waiting as only 1 lift running. Clean and quick.

Shanklin is protected by high sandstone cliffs and when the tourists arrived, most of the new hotels and guest houses were built on top of the cliffs. It was (and still is) a steep walk down either by the road or steps to the promenade and beach 45m below. The climb back up seems even steeper and longer...
A cliff lift was built in the 1890s to carry the tourists and save the climb. This was damaged during the war, demolished and replaced by the current cliff lift. Unlike the cliff railways found at many other seaside resorts, this is a vertical lift. Visitors walk along an elevated passage to the lift. Taking a few seconds, it is a very different experience and much easier than the climb! Go and try it for yourself....

We were in the area and saw this as we were walking. It looked like it had shut and didn't the surrounding area didn't look overly inviting. When we had a closer look it was operating still but seemed like there was issue with the lift as someone was on the fixed phone talking to someone just inside. We then saw a couple of people walk up and seem the lift seemed to work. It costs £1 to use. The area is steep to walk up and down so this could be good for people who don't like this.

If you are parked on the esplanade and want to visit the town this is the best way, unless you like steep uphill walks.
At the moment the fare is £1 per person return. After visiting the town you can either go via the lift or for a more scenic (and expensive) route go via the chine.

Very much needed. Very steep to walk up or down. The lift is a good send. A £1 for a return use is brilliant value for money. Very interesting history
