Bernard castle ruins are not to be missed if you are staying in the town, which is I interesting in it's own right as it was a market town. The castle is an easy walk from the high street and not expensive to get into.

As with virtually all medieval castles this is something of a ruin and coommands an imposing position above the river with a number of fine views from the remains of the castle walls. Much of the outer walls remain and a number of the interior...More

Of all the castles and architectural ruins we visited in Yorkshire (and there were quite a few) this was probably my favourite. There's a good variety of walls and steps, plus the wooden walkway which gives a lovely view of the stone bridge and river...More

There are substantial remains of the castle which is a short walk from the town centre parking. The castle offers fine views over the river and has somewhat basic information signs around the site. Presumably there is more in the guidebook, I deliberately never buy...More

Barnard Castle, Vow, dear English Heritage you should fire the person who was arranging the display and information there. Any teenager could write and provide more information from an internet in an hour, much better than this disappointing historian. Basic information, such as there is...More

Went here as part of our holiday, was quite a good castle to walk around, but would recommend joining English heritage as it can get quite expensive to visit these places as you are not there that long. Needs to be a dry day though...More

Lovely little historic market town worth a visit especially on farmers market day! Different places to eat and drink, and a castle to visit.

We stayed at this campsite for three nights in August. It's a lovely quiet site and amenities were good. The reason we have not given 4* was for the welcome we received. The gentleman who booked us in offered no conversation only asking us "have...More

I would say a large part of the castle is accessible provided you are happy to go across grass, i.e. There isn't paths everywhere. The only bit you would completely miss are the views from inside the tower. There was quite a... More
