About
Lochleven is associated with many colourful events and has been visited by countless distinguished personalities during its history. The castle will be forever associated in the memory with another Stewart sovereign, Mary Queen of Scots. She first visited in 1561 as a guest of the owner, Sir William Douglas. But her last stay, in 1567-8, was as his prisoner. It was at Lochleven that she was compelled to abdicate her throne in favour of her infant son, James VI. The castle walls held her for less than a year. In May 1568 she escaped across the loch and before that month was out she was in exile in England. She never saw her native land again. Accessed by small passenger boat. Sailings run on a shuttle basis to and from the island on demand.

    Lovely slice of history
2 boat trips and an island to yourself for a tenner ...... whats not to like? Great little 1/2 day out, highly recommended. Better to pre book online and save your space on the boat you want.

    Excellent experience
The boat is small and holds 12 people, and takes 10-15 mins to reach the island. You could spend a couple of hours here, take a picnic. Toilets are provided. The boat goes back and forwards to the island every 45 mins or so, if there are 12 people in front of you you`ll need to wait for the next boat. Would highly recommend and will do it again.

    Beautiful scenery 😍
This little castle island is absolutely stunning. The views are breath taken. The boat trip out was nice and short and the water wasnt chappy at all. The lovely guys at the boatshed that drives the boat was amazing. The castle itself is stunning. With access to the second and third floor. Stairs are step so be careful but totally worth the visit

    Great visit
We had a great visit to the castle, we were not sure about the boat as it was smaller than I thought but the journey over was actually pleasant. The castle was enjoyable it was a wee bit windy on the day, but all was good . The boat driver was very informative as we crossed the loch. Very polite and helpful staff.

If you are interested in castles--especially castles that were visited by historic figures--then Lochleven is one to visit. The short boat ride is interesting in that the weather can be quite windy--and the lake therefore VERY choppy, with surprisingly big waves--and cool. Whatever, the castle is a good place to follow Mary, Queen of Scots' timeline.

I am willing to believe that the many positive reviews of the boat trip to Lochleven Castle are true, but those contributors were lucky enough to have been there when the boat was running! I pre-visited the pier and verified times etc, prior to bring along visitors. Today when we turned up, on one of the most glorious days of the summer so far, I was told that the ferry would not be running as one member of staff had phoned in "sick". This is not the way to run a tourist attraction. I will be most reluctant to return and will not recommend this excursion to others in the future.

Tried to book on-line yesterday evening but site wouldn't let me. So we drove all the way there this afternoon only to find that every single boat was booked. I asked if I could book for later in the week but the man in the ticket office said they didn't take advance bookings. If I wanted to come early morning and book a boat, then wander around for a while till the departure time I might be lucky! A very poor customer experience from Historic Scotland - this needs sorting.

I pass by the Loch daily and always fancied going to the castle. It’s easy to get tickets online or at the venue. Was well priced at £9 and sailings are every 15 minutes.

The guide was pleasant and had some interesting stories about the Loch and the castle history. The boat trip is was going and only takes 10 minutes. There’s not much to see but you do feel your walking around an undisturbed piece of history.

Worth a visit and something a little different to do either as a family or a couple

A castle on an island – wow. Prison for a year of Mary Queen of Scots – double wow. We arrived about after lunch midweek about 2 pm at the boat launch. Asked when the next boat was leaving. Basically, told when you are ready. These are small boats holding maybe 20 adults. We were the only two aboard. Had a nice conversation with the boat operator who passed on some of the history of the area. We arrived at the island and there were three people waiting to take the boat back. We had the whole place to ourselves.

For about an hour we wandered the grounds read the signs and the history of the place explored the shoreline and took pictures. It was magical, with the silence broken only by the sounds of the birds.

Highly recommend this tour and even better to be the only ones on the island.
