We decided to retrace the step of my father who was in an artillery regiment supporting the Highland Division - initially in the Maginot Line and then falling back to Normandy. Although cut off from Dunkirk the division made a gallant stand at Abbeville and then withdrew. We badly needed help to explain the war diaries and operating orders and Ian rose to the occasion. He led us to fields, lanes and villages where the guns were disposed or observation posts installed and explained how the guns were used and moved during the chaos of withdrawal back to Le Havre and escape. With his input - brilliant maps and explanations - the whole sequence of events was brought to life. So we really felt we were "In the Footsteps" of a young and untried soldier. Thanks Ian.

Jo - major apologies for the delay in this reply. As a preface, Trip Advisor would not allow a "June 2019" event option. Thanks again for organizing our 75th D-Day tour (June 2nd -8th, 2019) with Tony Smith, as it was a treasured lifetime event. Tony’s passion for the history of WWII and D-Day was obvious, and he was a superb tour guide, driver, logistics organizer and host. I would unconditionally recommend “In the Footsteps” and Tony to anyone considering a Normandy tour. Tony was highly organized and focused on providing maximum personal value to each of the attendees in our group. Although our itinerary was precisely planned well in advance, Tony joined us each morning for breakfast, and based on his knowledge of our group, he informally presented a few optional/additional customized stops or sites for our discussion and approval – the sign of an experienced tour guide which all of us greatly appreciated. I am a Vietnam-era USMC veteran and a lifetime WWII history buff - from my perspective, Tony provided invaluable insights into the planning, logistics and strategy of the D-Day invasion on all five invasion beaches. Every site, memorial or stop during our tour was riveting and educational - sobering, humbling and overwhelming at many points, but invaluable. Bonus visit on June 6th - Maisy Battery. From a logistics perspective, we clearly understood that our tour was organized on short notice in context of a major event like the 75th D-Day Anniversary. Our hotel in Cabourg was surprisingly practical and comfortable. Thanks again for securing accommodations on short notice. As you may recall, our tour had seven (7) plus Tony, so Steve Yates and I enjoyed a bit of extra room in the backseat of our 9-passenger van. As every day on-tour was extended, I would highly recommend a maximum of seven tourists per van for future tours.

Thank you so much for your response. We thoroughly enjoyed organising these tours and Tony thoroughly enjoyed guiding you all. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 we were not able to be in Normandy this year but we remember all those who died for our freedom. We hope to see you again on one of our tours in the future.

Ian, our guide, was superb. We emailed details of some of our ancestors who had fought in the war and he compiled a tour based around where they had fought and where some had died. His research was incredible, we were able to track the movements of our ancestors and discover facts of which we were unaware. He located Cemeteries and memorials at which we could pay our respects. The use of a 4x4 enabled us to actually get to the locations at which many of the key battles involving our ancestors took place, as opposed to looking at them from a distance. Importantly, Ian, as a military historian was able to explain the context in which certain battles took place and the strategies adopted. The tour was informative, exhilarating and , at times, emotional. It was a fantastic experience. We cant wait to book another tour and I would recommend "In the Footsteps" without any hesitation. The booking process was straightforward and a detailed itinerary was sent before the Trip. Because of their knowledge of the locality we received sound travel and accommodation advice. Excellent.

Jo and Ian were very helpful in planning 3 days visiting Battle of the Bulge sites. The first 1.5 days were focused on my Dad's Company B and Ian took us from the train station he arrived in a box car in December 1944 to hills he fought up with many stops inbetween. I now have a much better understanding of the role of infantry (my dad was a private) as the first to push through in a battle with tanks to follow--the deadliest positions. Especially memorial were seeing foxholes (to be able to imagine freezing weather, summer uniforms and no ability to warm by a fire) and the Dragon's Teeth. Following the personlized tour portion, Ian shared Pieper's tanks and other sites relevant to the Battle. Thank you to "In The Footsteps Battlefield Tours."
