The Gate House at the front dates from 1190. Chepstow has the oldest Castle doors in Europe, pre-ringed dated. Our 45 mins tours start outside at gate & progresses into Kitchen, Great Hall, 2nd Bailey, Great Tower, Upper Bailey & Barbican. You can climb Martin’s Towers which was the ladies withdrawal area, it has 73 steps to top of tower.... More

We have been to Chepstow several times, but had never visited the excellent Castle. What a mistake. It is well preserved and full of interest, perched on cliffs overlooking the majestic river Wye. Something for everyone and handily placed for the town, but please allow a couple of hours at least to get the most from your visit. We had... More

This is a good place for a quick visit on a rainy day although it did get slippery. I can imagine a hot day with a picnic and a walk would be lovely. At £6 per adult it is reasonably priced. I thought it could do with a bit more signage to read about.

One of the best days out I have had. Really good castle kids would love it. Lots to climb up and hide places.

We spent about an hour and a half here on a very cold day but enjoyed our visit. Dogs allowed on leads. Lots of steep steps but good views and lots to explore. Info boards good.

I love this castle and keep returning again and again and the small museum that explains things is interesting and the staff are friendly and welcoming and it is excellent value for money.

Brilliant castle on the cliffs above the Wye river. It is well signed with information boards, and you can see the progression of the building phases. Although partially ruined there is still so much standing it really is possible to "feel" what it would have been like in times past. so many photo opportunities from the walls

Chepstow Castle is what I would call a proper castle, a fortress not just a big house! Had a great time wandering round the ruins.

Fab day out with my hubby, toddler & his uncle. Castle great fun to look around, but not totally buggy accessible. Fantastic staff though, signed up as members now. Friendly and helpful service. Drink in the neighbouring pub afterwards, which was lovely.

Chepstow was the answer to my dream of visiting a period castle. This is a ruin but the extended historical value is intriguing. So many additions over so many centuries and so much of it is still standing and viable. Nooks and crannies and staircases and plasforms galore to explore and ponder. Definitely worth the visit!
