The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema.

The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names.

Access: The SJT provides regular captioned and audio described performances and has infrared and induction loop systems. There is level access to the Box Office and disabled toilets, a wheelchair lift to the Shop and a passenger lift giving access to all floors. There are designated wheelchair spaces in both theatres, which are easily accessible from the lift. Please notify the Box Office at the time of booking if you require wheelchair access. Access to some seats in The Round and The McCarthy is via steps, please advise staff when booking if you have any specific seating requirements.

It's some years since my last review of Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre, which has been going through major changes lately, and all for the better, I'd say. So, an update. As someone born in the town and very familiar with this institution since the 1970s, I still say, it's much, much more than 'The Ayckbourn Theatre', although we're proud to... More

We recently went to see The Empty Nester's Club which was an excellent play. The location is superb, using theatre in the round to the best effect.

We've visited the SJT on many occasions. The theatre has really good productions 'In The Round' which is a really unique and very entertaining live theatre. It is small enough to be intimate - the actors being literally feet away from the audience.SJT is of course the home of Alan Ayckbourne and puts on many of his premieres before hitting... More

This may be daft but being a Scarborian you would think that I would have been to the cinema before now, anyway went to see La La Land and found it a lovely theatre, big enough yet cosy. Will definitely go again and you can pre book seats too.

First stay in Scarborough, first visit to SJ threaten to see Invincibles. Fantastic theatre, I'm sure wherever you sit you'd get a good view, never been in this type of theatre before and it's thoroughly recommended. Seats were comfy, loos clean and tidy, staff helpful and cheerful, play thought provoking and funny. Definitely recommend if you're in Scarborough and there... More

Visited with a friend to see La La Land. The young gent who sold us our tickets was warm and friendly, wish I had known his name to give him a personal name check - no name badge from what I remember. Decor of the building internally was stunning and wish I had more time to investigate it fully. As... More

This is a very nice place, There is a super program of performances, throughout the year from Shakespear to comedy farces, also a cinema. Whilst you are there a visit to the SJT Shop is advisable where there is an varied amount of beautiful craft made items for sale all made by local artists.

I have been many time to the cinema and it is a small cosy venue. The theatre is in the round, so the audience is very close to the actors.

We went to see Pinocchio on the afternoon of New Year's Eve and enjoyed it very much. The cast of 4 did a wonderful job,and my grandson was on the edge of his seat with excitement. The cast worked really hard, singing, dancing and playing different musical instruments,a great start to new year.
