We went to Fjaerland last summer. We took the ferry from Balestrand, which was lovely. The fjord water is turquoise as it is fed from the glacier. We rented bikes and went to visit the glacier museum which was interesting and took a picnic up the (long) hill to one of the bases of the glacier - fantastic, noisy.

The bookshops are fun with lots of foreign titles as well as Norweigian. There are a few places to stay, old-fashioned and pleasant.

Fjaerland is a tiny town with a huge amount of beauty. The book stalls and bookshops are amazing and a small wooden church that operates every 3rd week. But you come here for the scenery, the walks and time just taking in the fjord and surrounding mountains - either from the water or the surrounding countryside. A peaceful place (if you come by car and not with a full bus or boat of tourists) where it feels like time has stood still. Will be recommending to friends visiting Norway.

We took a trip to Fjaerland from Balestrand for the book town since we frequent such places at home. In fact the boat trip was the highlight and the attractive church in Fjaerland (or Mundal). We were not wanting to visit the glacier museum. We took the 12 noon boat and that gave us from 1.40 to 3.20 in town and we grabbed a light lunch as well as looking at the books. As English speakers this was long enough since naturally most books are in Norwegian. The shops don’t open until later in the morning so the 8am boat would not have been sensible.

Take a half day or full day trip for same price from Balestrand and the visit to glacier museum and the glacier is included in the price. Well worth it.

Bookshops, beautiful scenery, icy water and a lovely sauna, the Glacier Museum and sights we may no longer retain. Fjaerland stood out amongst all the Norwegian fjords as somewhere hospitable, dramatic and well worth a visit. Stunning.
