Borgund Church is situated in the old trading community Borgundkaupangen, and is partially built on the remains of the old St. Peter's Church from the 12th century. Most parts of today's church are from 1904, with lovely carvings by Nicolai Mejdel og Hans Johannessen. Borgund Church can seat 650 people. The church was reconstructed after a fire in 1904, but they chose to keep the roman style. Parts of the church originate from the St. Peter's Church, which was built in the 12th century. There was several extentions made between 1632 -1868. Notice the beautiful carved interior, made by Nicolai Mejdel and HansJohannessen, Lars Kinsarvik, Lerdal, Johansen and Johannes Rykken. Study the stone altar from the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, the trading community in Borgundkaupangen had three churches, and hidden under the ground on the way to Borgund Animal Club, lies the remains of a marble church, Kirstkyrkja. This has probably been a cathedral. Several burial mounds from the Middle Ages have also been discovered in the area around Katevagen. When arranged visits at Borgund church are requested, please contact the church office in advance to make an appointment. This in order to avoid funerals, weddings etc.

The first time I visited Borgund Kirke, was on a summers evening. When we walked into the church, there was a choir singing, so we sat up the back and soaked in the moment.
The church features beautiful rounded ceilings which are start white in contrast to the wood work, stained glass and gold ornaments.

A short five minute walk will reveal little wooden houses, a lake, the local Long Boat museum. This place is really cool to visit.
It is a short 10 minute rive from the city center.
A couple years later, I married my husband here. It was the perfect location for a wedding and the church was so very accommodating.
I would recommend visiting here. It's worth going to when the museum is open.

We had high expectations when we visited this stave church. Our expectations were exceeded. The workmanship is beautiful and the design reminds of the vikings ship that once roamed the area. We were unable to enter the building, but the outside of this all wood building was worth the trip. It sits in a lovely spot surrounded by a small forest. We were highly impressed.

What a trip back to the Middle Ages! Well preserved and unchanged, and with unique construction. There are only 29 of these churches left in Norway and this is supposed to be the least changed and most "authentic."

Went to Sunnmore Museum and recommend a side visit to this lovely church. It was locked so we could not see inside ut the church has lovely wooden doors and steeple.

We visited this church as part of a cruise ship excursion. Unfortunately, we could not enter the church - apparently it is not open on Saturdays - but we did walk around the exterior and the extensive graveyard.
Visiting the church and graveyard has historic value. The original church on the site was a stone structure that was built around 1300. A fire almost totally destroyed it in 1904 - a terrible loss of an historic treasure . The parish quickly rebuilt the church on its original footprint and it was reopened in 1907, thus the current church is more than 100 years old. Along the side and rear is a beautifully landscaped graveyard. Most of the gravestones appear to be recent, but there were some graves that no doubt were older than the current church building.
The church bulletin board out front publicized a summer concert series, among other things.

For us it was nothing unusual or exceptional... but its overall great to see how all the things have been rebuilt after the destruction in fire in early 19th century...

A beautiful church with superbly kept graveyard. All were decorated with flowers and headstones kept immaculately clean. There are benches placed around it and I found it a very peaceful place to sit and think for a while.

This is a very pretty church and super well kept cemetery. The grounds are immaculate and the church is small and very cute. This is the third time I have visited here and it doesn't change at all. Well worth a visit, very pretty and the surroundings are gorgeous.

The stone church of Borgund in Ålesund is not to be confused with the stave church of the same name on the Sognefjord. Its present appearance and wonderful wooden decoration date back to 1904, when it was rebuilt after a fire.
