Overview
More
One of the most important monuments of the Renaissance. Close to Hakon’s hall lies the Rosenkrantz Tower, which is considered to be the most important Renaissance era monument in Norway. Parts of the tower are from the 1270s, but it has been built upon several times, both for defensive purposes and as a demonstration of power over the wilful Hanseatic merchants. Through dim and narrow stairways you can climb all the way to the roof, where the view over the city, the harbour and the fortress is impressive even today. On Sundays and all through the summer season one can take part in tours (for an extra NOK 20) which include both Hakonshallen and the Rosenkrantz Tower. Daily 9 until 16 from mid may-mid september.

Originally built by a 'dour' Scot, it certainly reminds you of many similar fortresses seen in Scotland. Lots of interesting and hands on exhibits - a must for children with fit energetic parents.

I walked over to see this but it is all wrapped up in construction material. I did get to look at the church right next to it. But this one isn’t viewable all that much now. You can read the plaque.

It was worth going to see, because castles are fun, however there's not much left to see after being blown up by a German munitions ship in 1944.

We visited this tower as we wanted a short activity and it was close to our hotel. It was a lot more interesting than we expected. When we visited, the outside of the tower was hidden by scaffolding, but we could explore inside. Lots of...More

For anyone who loves medieval castles, this is a must-see. Walking up the stairs and the labyrinth of rooms, which are filled with period dresses, furniture, and display of historical battles, one could imagine what life was like hundreds of years ago. Just make sure...More

We came for a visit because Haakon’s Hall was closed. The exterior of the tower is currently in scaffolding, under renovation, but the interior is open. The entry fee of 80NOK was reasonable for a dose of medieval history. We came during an unusually hot...More

Worth the entrance fee to explore all the rooms and displays and climb to the top. The three of us entered at 2pm but had to scurry out when it closed at 3pm and we missed some. The red arrows were helpful directing where to...More

This is a historic location for protection of the town. There is a self guided tour of the tower that explains the functions of this site, its history and reconstruction after damage in WWII.
