This is one of the oldest buildings in Bergen. Our guide said that church often is called as "The German Church". The church served for Hanseatic Society in Bergen. until the end of 19th century all services there were held in German. This is lutheran church now.

Nice, small and historically important 900 year old Church in Bergen. Free with the Bergen Card — we paid a fee to go in in. The Church was used by the Hanseatic Merchants hundreds of years ago. It used to be Catholic. Very beautiful inside. It can often be used for weddings, concerts and regular Church services. It is located behind the Bryggen Museum, so it makes sense to visit both places while a the Bryggen area of Bergen.

The Romanesque St. Mary's Church is the oldest surviving building in Bergen and dates from the 12th century. ==References== During the time of the Hanseatic League it was the main church of the German merchants. Until the 19th. In the 19th century, services were held here in German. The church interior is worth seeing. Beautiful altarpiece and a magnificently decorated pulpit. Free admission with Bergen Card.

The church was built in the middle of the 1100 century. Very nice and interesting altar from the late 1400 century. The sermon is a magnificence presented by German merchants in 1676. Many tombs in the church.

If you like old churches, don't miss this one. It is absolutely beautiful inside. Be sure to check opening times once you are in Bergen. We were there on a Monday in July. Our information stated the church was open 11-4, but when we got there at 11:30 it was closed until 1300 or 1330. Tourists from several other countries had the same information as we did. We did come back later and it was worthwhile to do so.

This richly adorned church is truly spectacular. We were fortunate to catch an a cappella concert - eight voices of superb quality, which sounded even more superb in the excellent acoustics of the ancient church. Highly recommend a visit to the church - but check online for opening times because it is not open every day. Also recommend a concert if you can time your visit to coincide.

The interior of the church is beautiful, with many statues and paintings. The painting of the beheading of John the Baptist is quite gory. The angels carved on the pulpit were amazing. The church recently underwent a restoration, so they do charge an admission fee. Sadly, you are not allowed to take any pictures inside the church.

Adjacent to Schotstuene (part of Hanseatic musem), this church was linked to the Hanseatic League. Gorgeous church to view inside and out. A must if you are interested in the history of Bergen.

Still provides Lutheran worship services, and museum. There is an admission fee, to help maintain this beautiful stone building. Curator was very helpful, in giving us some order of services and information on the history.

Very impressive outside and in, but I must confess to an aversion to paying to enter a church. We would be happy to contribute of our own volition.
