About
Fløyen is a must do while in Bergen. Fløibanen, the funicular brings you up the hillside, from Bergen city centre to the top of the mountain in 6 minutes. At Mount Fløyen you will find beautiful views of Bergen, the nearby islands, fjords and mountains surrounding Bergen. Fløyen is a great destination for hiking, mountain biking and soft adventures. We are surrounded by hillsides, mountains, forests, nice little lakes and numerous trails. We offer daily guided hikes “Hiking Mount Fløyen" and Mountain bike rental from mid June until mid August. We love children, and the children love Fløyen. Let the kids explore our playground, Fløysletten climbing playground, the Troll forest. Try out canoe paddling at lake Skomakerdiket (mid June - mid August), feel the adrenalin rush in FløyenKids ziplinepark and get at kiss from our lovely goats at Fløyen. Fløistuen shop and cafè have souvenirs, perfect gifts and memories from Bergen and Norway. We offer local food as “Fløyenbollen", the cinnamon-bun and our organic soup “Fløyensuppen". Fløien Folkerestaurant is open daily from May until September.

- Georgie WLondon, United Kingdom122 contributionsBeautiful experienceIf you were so inclined you could spend the entire day at the top of Mt Floyen! The initial view is breathtaking as others have mentioned, but there is so much more to see at the top. There's the cafe but the queue can get a bit long, so it's great they have various pop ups for a bar, ice cream and more. The walk to the lake is quite good for beginners and is another great view on arrival. Don't be misled by the queue at the bottom to buy tickets - ignore that and simply purchase your ticket online which is so much easier.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 19 September 2023
- pip2246London, United Kingdom571 contributionsA must do in BergenWhat a fun experience. The trip up and down does not take long but when you get up there it is beautiful. Even though it was a chilly cloudy day I loved it. The views were amazing and there were not too many people around. Lovely to see the goats and the adventure park and even braved sitting outside on the terrace for a beer. Only downside was the price 180nok for the few minute trip up and downVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 September 2023
- BalkrishnaShroffMumbai, India25,716 contributionsBest attraction of Bergen !!This turned out to be the best attraction in Bergen. It takes about 6 minutes to reach top in a beautiful Funicular ride. It was cloudy and cold when we reached the top which added to its charm. The view from top of Bergen and surrounding places was breath taking. We walked around a lot in a picturesque ambiance. There was a hiking path to go to Mount Ulriken for adventure sekers. It was very nice to see the goats over here. We had some coffee in the restaurant while enjoying mother nature. It's open from May to September. Not to be missed while in bergen...Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023
- machinmadYaxley, United Kingdom2,577 contributionsGreat views at the top ...Situated on the mountain side of the old town, this modern, comfortable transportation whisks you up the hill quickly and efficiently. At the top you marvel at the panoramic views across the bay and out to sea. Buy your tickets online before arrival to save queuing at the ticket office.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 1 October 2023
- Helena KUnited Kingdom133 contributionsGreat views...and goats!Funicular ride is very quick - just a few minutes if you take the direct line. Others will stop off at one or two other places. Not the cheapest I've ever experienced but once at the top you get fantastic views of the city, even on a rainy, foggy day. At the top there's also an adventure park for kids and some goats! They don't mind being petted but you mustn't feed them. It took about 45 minutes to walk down - not exactly a straight route but it's mainly road and some steps, so it's not too exerting.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 October 2023
- Angela PSydney, Australia16 contributionsA great way to see BergenWorth it! I caught the tram up and the views on the way and at the top are beautiful. Bergen is such a gorgeous city and it’s worth seeing it all from above. I was walking around and the scenery is so different to Australia (obviously) but I felt like I was walking through a fairy tale. I walked down - 45 mins back to the city. The architecture of the houses are gorgeous. It’s all down hill but I had fatigued calves a day or two afterwards. But like I said, it’s worth it. I got my tickets from the tourist information, but you can get it at the starting place. Do it… it’s a great way to spend a couple of hours (if you walk down. Less of you tram it back down). The views are incredible.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 October 2023
- Niamh FHarrow, United Kingdom19 contributionsIncredible views and activitiesExcellent views in October. We went up on quite a foggy day but the fog cleared and we saw stunning views. There are also hikes you can take up there, coffee shops, and even wild goats that are very friendly. I recommend.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 October 2023
- rtdoodManchester, United Kingdom790 contributionsDo it. Beautiful views and petting goats, what's more to love!Definitely worth a visit. Easy to find and offering great views over the city it is not surprising this is popular with lots of tourists! Be prepared for crowds however, as they can arrive quite literally by the coach load. That said, when I visited getting a ticket from the booth at the front was quick and easy. I was only queuing for about 5 minutes. Staff spoke English and recommended a return rather than a single ticket as it was cheaper! Ride to the top was quick and smooth, meaning it was possible to get pictures from the car on its way up. The viewing area at the top is wide and stretches round to the side, and is also layered meaning you can get unobstructed views without other tourists getting in the way. Specifically the views you get are north out towards the harbour, old town, as well as across to the west and south-west of Bergen between the smaller mountains. Impressive and the views were much better than expected! I took a walk round towards the back of the viewing point, where you can find goats and walking paths back down to the city as well as nice kids play park and the café/restaurant building. The latter was undergoing renovation when I visited. I defiantly recommend walking down despite the ease of the funicular railway. This way you get walk the narrow cobbled streets and see some incredibly pretty wooden buildings without getting out of breath!Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 29 October 2023
- BB45BritsPretoria, South Africa295 contributionsExcellent, worth itExcellent and well worth it. If you would like good photo opportunity go early to avoid the masses. Fantastic views and walking. Some renovation was being done while I visited so not everything was open. One thing, the funicular times are not strictly followed, so don’t rely on the said trip every 30minutes, it just constantly goes up and down, timing 5-10mins early. I would recommend going up in the funicular but then take the 3km walk back down to the City centre.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 29 October 2023
- Gus HStuart, Florida712 contributionsThorough enjoyable day in BergenThe views were amazing, especially those from atop the funicular which, by the way, was just a leisurely walk from our Clarion Hotel Admiral Bergen. The folks there are very accommodating. Watch out, though , a cab ride from the airport (on Sunday) was $87.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023

We did two trips up the railway, one at night time and one in the morning. It is worth doing it in both lights to see the view.
Tickets aren't very expensive, around £8 GBP per person and can be booked very easily on the Floibanen App, then scan the QR on your phone at the barrier and you get straight through without having to queue at all.

Great way to view Bergen, I recommend going near the end of the day to view Bergen in both daylight and then later light up at night. Funicular ride is nothing special, just a means of getting to the top which is well worth it. Heaps of fun playgrounds for kids at top as well as hiking trails, a nice resturaunt and cafe.

We were on the 1st funicular of the day (8am), so we had the place to ourselves for some time. The views are gorgeous, even on a dull winter day, and the viewing areas are plentiful. The little shop opened at 9am and we enjoyed hot chocolate and cinnamon buns (literally straight from the oven!).
We had a great time exploring the walking trails at the top, including the very pretty trail around the frozen lake. By the time we returned heaps of people had arrived and the sky had cleared so it was time to take in those views again.
The walk back down to Bergen is lovely, going through some beautiful bush areas. You can also walk up if you prefer, or take the funicular both ways.
This is a lovely excursion from Bergen.

Best to check the weather before buying any tickets up. If the weather is bad, you see nothing. We were greeted with fogs at the top after taking the funicular up, no view of the city and with the cafe closes we were out of the place by the next ride down.

The weather is unfortunately something we can't control. I hope you had time to visit our Troll forest or walk one of the many trails in the area. To see our opening hours visit our website. Here you can also buy tickets in advance, and find information about the hiking trails.

For a relatively small price you get a stunning view of Bergen, the harbour and the surrounding islands. In March we got a lovely mix of snow capped mountains and city, it really was beautiful. There's shops at the top for food and souvenirs, as well as a walking route through the mountains just above Bergen - it was a bit too snowy for us to do but must be lovely in summer. Definitely come up here when you're visiting Bergen!

A mid-afternoon trip up the funicular and little queue to speak of with social distancing occurring on board, perhaps more by design of the passengers themselves. What a view of Bergen in all its jaw-dropping beauty from the top! Unless you are short for time or have mobility issues, no real need to take the funicular back down to town. Much more fun to meander along some of the trails. Walking down at a leisurely pace takes about 45 minutes and once you leave the foliage of Mount Floyen behind, you can explore some of the quaint alleys at seemingly every turn.

We had dreamed of this place and we have not been disappointed ! Everyone does it but you just need to look at the view to understand why ! The journey in funicular is of course part of its charm as you see the city getting further and further away.
We went up quite late so we didn't get to enjoy everything that the Mount Floyen has to offer but it will just be an excuse to come back !
However, if you are planning to use your Bergen Card discount to get to the top, be sure to come while the ticket office at the city station is open; as you won't be able to get the discount if you buy your ticket from the machine. (As a lot of places, the office closes early even in summer, at 4 pm in our case but we went up at 10:30pm)

We were in Bergen for half a day as a cruise ship stop. Someone had told us we would have to be early off the ship and make our way straight to the funicular if we wanted to stand a chance of getting on it. However we had taken a leisurely walk to the nearby area and thought we would take a look at the queue. Well there wasn’t one. We bought a ticket at the booth (150kr return in June 22) and boarded straight away. There is limited seating in each section but more room to stand. The electronic boards suggested trains were every 30 mins which worried us a little in case it got busy however they were pretty much running up and down constantly.
The station and the carriage were spotless. The ride up and down is very swift (under 3 minutes). If you can try to get the bench seats in the lowest carriage for the best views.
The views from the top are spectacular. We could see our cruise ship in its berth in the distance. There is a lot to see at the top but our time was limited so we just walked to the lake which was enchanting. You could easily spend several hours up here.
When we arrived back at the base station it was busier with a small queue for tickets from the booth but there were electronic machines which very few seemed to be using. If you had purchased your tickets in advance you could scan the QR code on your mobile to open the gates.

Highly recommended. The funicular ride itself is nice, and the view from Fløyen is hard to beat. Once you're on Fløyen, I recommend the cafe past the souvenir shop for its delicious buns. Also, on Sundays you can hike a fairly short distance to Brushytten, where you can buy Norwegian waffles (just double-check that it's open before you go).
I also like about the funicular that it's not just for tourists -- it's also used by locals to get to and from the city.
If conditions permit it, I recommend hiking up or down the mountain for the scenic trails and the amazing views of Bergen.

When you have less than half a day to explore Bergen, you need to be rather disciplined about your sightseeing. At least that's what the anal-retentive side said to me in private, and I knew riding this funicular was on the top of the list. You may ask why, and I would probably raise one eyebrow and clapback "The view, of course." Fortunately, our hotel was just five minutes away from the lower terminus where we were thrilled to find there was no queue of tourists. We paid our 150 NOK round-trip tickets (about $15.40 in US dollars) and were able to get backward-facing seats where we could see the scenic view rising in front of us behinds the heads of the other passengers.
The cars have stepped floors and open windows as they climb almost a thousand feet against the relatively steep slope of Mount Floyen. The ride took about eight minutes as it made two intermediate stops for locals who actually use the funicular as a commuter train (...how frustrating that must be for them during peak tourist season.) Once we arrived at the upper terminus, we first took notice of the expansive viewing terraces which afford spectacular views of Bergen around its harbor. As we walked around the terraces, we began to realize how big the city was as it's Norway's largest city next to Oslo.
Once we took most of our photos, we noticed there was a restaurant, a cafe, a souvenir shop, and a playground, which frankly turned the area into more of an amusement park. My husband was intrigued by signs to a nearby lake which was a few minutes stroll away in the woods. There wasn't much to the lake except a flurry of gnats, so we didn't stay long. Even though the funicular was more crowded going down, the ride back didn't take any longer than the ride up. I have to credit the operating company (Fløibanen AS) for a smooth operation. Listen, I've ridden my share of funiculars from Hong Kong's Peak Tram to Angel's Flight in LA, and this one was definitely in the upper tier.

Very simple. The entrance to the funicular is inside a building and you have to purchase the tickets inside the entrance to get into the funicular.

Yes, we found in Norway they prefer credit cards for everything. You need to book the trip on line with Viator a few days before you want to go.
