Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

..or just a nice place to hang out on a sunny day. Take a guided tour once you get to the island, it's worth it. Tip: Bring your own food, it's expencive to eat there.

It was a beautiful day and the ride out to the island was amazing. Definitely take the guided tour - if you look around on your own, there isn't much to see. But the guide gave us so much information that made the visit worthwhile....More

I visited the island on a wonderful sunny day. The small cafe on the island is a nice place to relax, and the views are great. Sadly I didn't see too much of the history, as there were several school groups there that day, and...More

We took the ferry out to Munkholmen and knew we would have an hour to wait for the next ferry back. We entered the fort but was disappointed to find that the inner fort was closed. There is a charge to enter the inner fort...More

The island has served as a place of execution, a monastery, a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. It's a short boat ride from downtown Trondheim. The tour guide was informative and genial. It was worth the trip, I'd recommend it.

lovely for a "hot day out": some minutes away from the city centre on a ferry (80 kr. for an adult return ticket). Take what you need, not much to find if you come to buy a mat or sun lotion, or so (visitors are...More

It's just a short distance from town on the boat, a 15 minute trip maximum. Not much to do once you get out there though. Nice cafe with good ice cream
