A little dated in style, but due to close in October 2021 for 5 years for a new building. Nicely presented informative, the video was quite difficult to follow as you needed to look at all the wall surfaces. If when I return I'll revisit if it's open

It closes on oct 1st, for five years, so I'd go asap.
It's not that much to do - but the viking ships are wonderful to take in and behold and the interactive movie transcends language.
I'm very impressed with how sacred the experience felt - it was a beautiful thing.
If it feels "short", remember that there are other museums within walking distance as well.

The Viking Museum is surprisingly small, but is interesting and (when you think about it) amazing that these ships are so old and still so well preserved! There were two intact ships and one that is a burial ship and far less preserved and more of a flat piece of wood. A lot of the artifacts were taken for repair when I was there (right after it reopened post COVID), and from what I understand, won’t be back for some time. There is a great video that plays - a lot of time and effort went into it and the museum partnered with the Viking Voyages. Also the current ticket purchase also serves to get you into the Volksmuseum down the street - so it’s two for one.

The museum is small, less than 45mn to visit. Very nice reconstruction of the ships. Two small rooms with video animation and an exhibition of Viking artefacts. Interesting visit even if the entrance fee may be a bit high.

So!First of all :for me this was the best museum in Oslo. Others is also nice but here you didn’t need to read a lot only the most main important things. And the building make for the ships.

We loved this place. It is small but fascinating, with lots of interesting bits of information. Amazing how they put together the ships and sleds etc. again, despite them being crushed into small pieces during burial.

How much is the bus from City Hall to Viking Museum? Do I need exact change? Do I buy a return bus ticket at the start? People also said to take a ferry from Dock 3, and we are coming from a Holland America cruise ship----Is that a better way to go to the Museum and return to ship? Thank you.

If the weather is nice, I would recommend the ferry. A one way ticket bought on board costs 60 NOK. If you buy the ticket ahead of time or a roundtrip, you can get a discount.

How much time would you need to visit each museum comfortably? Are they basic 5 minute and done, or could you spend a couple of hours viewing?

Does anyone know the name of the song that's playing at the movie?

You might want to try emailing the museum (mailto:postmottak@khm.uio.no) but I’m afraid the soundtrack may have been recorded solely for the purpose of the animation and may not be made available.

The first ship was shifted there in 1926, and the final building was finished in 1956. As far as I know a new shifting, whch has been planned for many years now have been skipped for good
