This is an amazing drive from Vardo. The views are spectacular. The roads are narrow and windy, so watch our for cars, sheep and reindeer. I went in July and there was still some ice in the fields (great photo moments). When you get to the village there isn't much there. Alot of cute cottages that are only used in the summer as the road is closed in the winter. No stores so take everything you need. There is a cafe with limited hours. On the beach there were some people kite surfing. Then down on the fields herd of reindeer were grazing. This is a definite must. The drive is beautiful, the houses are cute and you can stay over night.

Long drive on really narrow roads. But, coming around each corner a new wonder was revealed, I think the pictures speak for themselves.

Remember to stock up on fuel, snacks and drinks, there are no gas stations or shops on the last part of the trip. Also be aware of the reindeer, they are everywhere and can jump into the road at any time. They even filled a couple of the spectacular beaches along the road. You can walk down to them, but do not scare them; the whole area is wildlife refuge.

We tried going into the turquoise, crystal clear water, but it was freezing! Fun though, to see who could stay in the longest :)

This is a place I definitely will go back to; it is one of the most beautiful places we have seen in the world. Of course, having clear blue skies and temperatures in the 70ties/21C made it just perfect!

Hard to believe 1000' of people stayed here during winter when they were fishing cod in the Barents Sea.
Scenic road from Vardø to Hamningberg is an attraction of its own!

A little village seems to be a dead end. End of the world. There was very little to see but the old houses and sea. Still the place and the road leading there is worth of seeing.

Hamningberg is a village located to the North of Vardo which, in itself, is in a very remote location at the North Eastern end of Norway and Europe. It is reached by a narrow road, maintained solely for the pleasure of driving it and it is indeed a pleasure, although don't expect to do it fast, especially if vehicles come the other way. However we achieved the feat in a wide motorhome so it is possible with care.

Having negotiated the road you arrive at an abandoned village although many of the houses are now used as summer homes. It is a wierd experience with so few people, no trees, patches of snow visible and, in the summer when we went, the midnight sun.

We stayed for two days and enjoyed the time walking and looking; we don't travel fast and there was little else to do. However the sense of isolation and leaving behind the rat race was extreme and valued - and this is true artic climate without the expense of a trip to Svalbard or one of the more northern points. However don't expect polar Bears but beware of the many Reindeer, seals, whales and sea birds in the locality.

Recommended for a "get away from it all" stopover. Not for those looking for facilities and entertainment on tap.

In your trip to Vardö in Finnmark, northern Norway, you could also visit Hamninberg. There is rocks, rocks and nothing but rocks. Still it's worth visiting. It is the end of the world or at least so it feels. In the end of the road there is an abandoned fishing village, few houses or cottages, even old school building. Some of old houses are still used as summer cottages. Enjoy the silence, nature and loneliness. But don't forget your lunchbox, it is lovely place to have a picnic.

This is a great hidden gem in Norway, not very touristified at all. There is a huge parking lot, and free toilets. Also a bit further west past the parking space, there is tons of room for mobile homes and campers.

We had the joy of spending our lunch with a hurd of reindeers.

Then we went for a walk up on the small mountain, to the old military fort. Do bring a good flash light or two, then you can have a proper look inside. The light from a mobile phone is not sufficient.

Fantastic nature, excellent view.

On our way down we even went past a "cafe" driven by the kids there for the summer. They make some really good waffles, and coffee is always great when you can have it unexpectedly.

This small village is really worth a visit. The old houses with all the beautiful flowers around are such a beauty. The drive from Vardo to Hamningberg is absolutely spectacular. The coastline is really something else. We even got to see a white tailed eagle and many rendeers.

The road to Hamninberg is something unforgettable. It is something like a moonscape, a rocky road. There´s very little to do when you get to the village, but the journey is worth anyway.
