Here you will find the ruins of the medieval cathedral and the bishop's residence from the 13th Century on the beautiful Museum grounds on the outskirts of Hamar. The museum is comprised of archaeological exhibitions, a botanical garden and an outdoor museum with about 60 buildings from around Hedemarken County. The cathedral ruins are protected by a much-discussed protective structure in glass and steel, called the Hamar Dome, which is an attraction in itself. Open every day in summer season. Groups all year when booked in forehand.

Great location!

Great historic location to visit, even during winter. As the building is as good as outdoow, please remember warm clothes.

Thank you for visiting, and for leaving those kind and useful words here! When it comes to indoor temperatures, is this one of the reasons why our museum is not ordinarily open during winter season. More

The ruins of the cathedral are preserved in a glass "dome" that recreates the original building. The accompanying museum is on the site of the fortress ruins. It has articles from both Viking times and the Middle ages and really shows what life was like then. There is also a replica of the town in the Middle Ages. And outside... More

The place is a worth going as a day trip from Oslo. I would just say if you want to go in the winter time, just call or email them. You might not be able to get in.

Beautiful way to keep safe the ruins. The open air museum is big, and in a very nice landscape. To spend a very nice and quiet day.

Hamar is connected via the trains and you can visit this little town at the edge of Norway's largest lake directly from Oslo airport. We did so to visit friends who happen to live in this lovely part of Norway. The most interesting place to visit is the Hedmark museum and the Domkirkeodden, but as we arrived in a car,... More

The ruins of the old Cathedral are impressive. The 'Dome' is protected by a high-tech glass building worth visiting in its own right. Fabulous acoustic experience if you are lucky enough to hear the singing guides. The outdoor museum is alright on a day of activity but the museum seem closed off to the public on normal days. Which is... More

We appreciate your kind words and just want to comment upon the issue of closed houses. The reason for this is only a matter of economy. We have chosen to keep an open museum park available to most people, hence do we not have the opportunity to keep 30 people at work guarding all our old houses, which would be... More

Old ruins in a glass-house. Nice walking around, and museum in walking distance. And in summertime: don't miss a trip with Skibladner. The ruins is fascinating in wintertime, try to join a service in a winter evening, but put on warm clothes.
