The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Leopoldstadt
Welcome to one of Vienna’s trendiest quarters. The second district has witnessed a turbulent ride, from medieval swamp to vibrant Jewish quarter, from pleasure ground for the noble and humble to current hip residence and workplace of Vienna’s creative crowd. Cross the Danube Canal from the city centre and take in life on Taborstrasse with its mix of old townhouses, churches, theatres, discount shops and ethnic restaurants. Head for Augarten via Karmelitermarkt, Leopoldstadt’s trendy marketplace. Baroque Augarten itself hosts a bizarre mix of manicured hedges and flowerbeds in front of a colossal World War II defense tower, the publicly accessible 300-year-old Augarten porcelain manufactory, the palatial boarding school and funky concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the modern art museum TBA21. At its opposite corner, The Prater not only houses the Giant Ferris Wheel but blends a bustling amusement park with lush woodland, perfect for a bike tour. Further east is the old derby racing ground of Krieau.

Visited as part of a cycling tour. The campus is interesting due to the modern buildings.

North of the city, near Prater park, it's quite peaceful. We visited on a Sunday afternoon, so no students around, making the place very quiet.

This is a wonderful collection of finest modern architecture - only steps away from the Prater. Different styles for different usages - accessible and usually open for the public. Don’t miss Zaha Hadid‘s library, the iconic center of the ca 2014 opened new campus of the Business University. Architectural tours are available but should be booked in advance.

Most people who visit Vienna concentrate on all the palaces, gardens, museums, and buildings from Vienna's past. Just outside the center, next to the Prater, and easily reached from the Messe Prater underground station, is a small university consisting of the most amazing modern architecture build around Zaha Hadid's beautiful library.

In 2013 the Vienna University of Economics and Business moved to a new location called "Campus WU" which is close to the Prater, Vienna's public park and next to the exhibition center. Very modern architecture - dominant element is the Library & Learning Center which was planned by famous architect Zaha Hadid. A Must-See when in Vienna!

Even you are not a student worthwhile coming here to see the modern and young architecture. Every building is amazing on it's own. You can combine the visit with a snack or drink in the local Campus restaurant. We were simply impressed, maybe also because we had fantastic light from the sunset and blue sky.

We were stunned by the architecture of the university: the shapes reminding of intergalactic ships, bright colours, wood so strangely embracing the walls. Really impressed! And the atmosphere was so nice: some people were playing basketball, some sunbathing, some chilling in the shadow of a tree.

We were initially puzzled when during a city tour, the guide was taking us to the university however after seeing the architecture, we knew why. No one in our group was knowledgeable about architecture but the buildings were some of the most unique we have seen and we appreciated having the guide to share the background on each of the buildings. If you are in the area for Prater, it is worth a stop here as well.

It is well worth the visit, especially on a working day, when one can enter and enjoy in the interior of the main building (btw, Zaha Hadid's masterpiece). We also sat across the Uni, on the wooden wavy benches, enjoying our breakfast. The other buildings on the campus are also uniquely beautiful.

One of the places that make the city distinctive.
Six architectural studios from six countries made six buildings of this unique campus.
Lucky students! :-)
You can get there by underground, it is the station Messe-Prater.

If you've ever been to a world expo, that is what the campus will evoke. Each building is an extraordinary piece of architecture. Form does NOT follow function here - these buildings are erected to show someone's prowess.

Tucked just beyond the Prater Park, it is about another kilometer out of the way and worth the visit. On campus there is also Mensa, a kind of coffee shop, and Das Campus, a great little campus restaurant that is above most such places.
