Neighbourhood: Josefstadt
The eighth district is an older generation’s Vienna at its finest: and this is what makes it popular with locals of all ages. Josefstadt has theatre, small independent shops, romantic passageways, neighbourhood cafés with regular clientele, church squares, town palaces and shady communal gardens. Trendy hangouts have conquered distinctive places such as the Old General Hospital (Altes AKH) and the vaults of overground U6. Theater in der Josefstadt on Josefstädter Strasse is the district’s cultural epicentre. Even if your German isn’t good enough to watch a play, you can marvel at the typical Biedermeier building and take a glimpse into the foyer. Lange Gasse houses an iconic local restaurant at its corner, as well as a legendary sweet shop and a bustling neighbourhood market every Saturday. For small palace atmosphere and a different view on Vienna’s history, make your way to Schönborn garden palace (Palais Schönborn), which houses the Museum of Folk and Folk Art (Volkskundemuseum). Maria-Treu-Platz, with its summer outdoor cafés facing baroque church Maria Treu, and the historic passageway of Lerchenfelder Strasse 13 hide top spots for insiders.

- BradHong Kong, China174,776 contributionsEnjoyable city park in front of KarlskircheKarlsplatz is one of several very nice city park, which line the Ringstrasse in Vienna. It is situated southwest of Stadtpark and southeast of Burgarten and in front of the imposing Karlskirche (St. Charles Church). Situated along with Resselpark, this is a nice rural(ish) city park with mature trees providing shade, some children's play area, cafe along with coffee kiosk and plenty of spots to sit on a bench or along the large circular pool in front of Karlskirche. The park is filled with monuments as well, providing some distraction and light sightseeing for those who enjoy monument viewing. There are events and markets held here at various times of the year as well including the popular Christmas Market each December. Lastly, Karlsplatz is a transportation hub in the area immediately adjacent to the Ringstrasse including a useful U-Bahn station, providing quick access to/from other area of the city.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 December 2023

The Christmas markets were also good.Visited this square to visit the Christmas markets and also St Charles church. The Christmas markets were spread out over much of the square and through the accompanying Resselpark. There was a good mix of craft stalls as well as those catering to food and beverage requirements. However what interested us most was the antique rail track where children on specially adapted bikes attempted to peddle them around the track. Looked as though the same set up would have been in existence in the 19th century.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2024

The interior is overly rich for my taste but impressive. The park which forms the parvis to this church is pleasant and we were lucky enough to witness a relay race round the lake involving local kids. .Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024
- Laura I58 contributionsNice place to visitThe first thing I have to say it’s that you have to pay to get inside the church. It’s ok I guess if you are really interested in seeing the inside of this church but the price is a bit steep. So for an adult you pay 7,5€ if you want the regular visit and 9,5€ if you want to see the balcony/upper terrace also. Well, it’s not a fortune but 2 adults and then the children are paying 7€ or 5,5€ something like that and then you end up paying 40-50€ just to see a church. You can visit Stephanplatz where is free to see the church or the Votivkirche (Votiv Church) where is also free entrance and both places are spectacular. The surrounding area is very nice, with a park and an artificial lake and a university. Across the street from the park is a museum (part of Albertina museum / Albertina 2). There are nice things to see and explore there. But if you stay in Vienna just a few days, choose something else (my opinion).Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 September 2024

Another square in central Vienna. Dominated by the Karlskirche and its two Roman-inspired columns. Quite near to Naschmarkt. In fact the reason we passed through Karlsplatz was to get to Naschmarkt for dinner after spending some time in Musikverein.
Also a major U-Bahn station where U1, U2 and U4 lines intersect.

As you are roaming through Vienna it is a good chance that sooner or later you will arrive to Karlsplatz- especially if you are using the U-Bahn (the subway) since several U-bahn lines connect in the Karlsplatz underground.
So since you arrived to Karlsplatz lets see what you can see here :
- the most important landmark for sure is the Karlskirche - with its very specific roman columns it is a very interesting church.
- Wiener Musikverein - the hall where the famous New Year's concert is taking place in Vienna.
- the buildings of the former Karlsplatz station - today turned into cafe (Otto Wagner's design - austrian architect , exponent of the Art Nouveau and Secession architectural styles).
- the park in Karlsplatz - with the oval pond in front of Karls Church (empty in february when I've been visiting).
So when you arrive to Karlsplatz stop for a few pics - for sure it is worth it ... go and enjoy.

Karlsplatz is a large public square in Central Vienna with impressive attractions and is one of the best transport hubs in the city. One of the biggest sections of the square is Resselpark named after the inventor Josef Ressel. Of all the attractions in the square the main landmark is Karlskirche which overlooks the whole area, there are many other notable sights in the area including the Secession Building and the Otto Wagner Pavilion amongst others. It is an impressive expanse in Central Vienna with a huge array of sights to be seen, we visited a number of times and is a place we would like to visit again as there is so much to see. The biggest bonus is that being a major transport hub it is so easy to get to.

This was the best Christmas market in Vienna by a mile. There was a lot less of the usual tourist tat and lots of high quality pottery and other upmarket wares. We tried around 6 markets and this was by far the best.
It is a bit of a walk out of the historic heart of Vienna but the setting is gorgeous, and the animals really helot give it a different sort of vibe.

Karlsplatz is centrally located in the first district of Vienna. There is much to see here as there are churches namely Karlskirtche, as well as the famous Musikverein concert hall which dates back to 1870. There is also a subway stop that connects all of Vienna.

Karlsplatz is an attractive square and would be worth a visit at any time, but at Christmas the crafts market is top notch. There was organic food, quality crafts, and children's activities.

An amazing church for a beautiful concert. We were able to see a Vivaldi concert at the church. It was a perfect setting for Vienna concert. We are able to enjoy a beautiful music and sacred setting. The seats are a little bit uncomfortable but the overall experience and acoustics of the church we’re just so impressive at night it made everything perfect for a beautiful evening in Vienna

Your posting was quite a while ago. Is the playground still there? Is it it still a safe enough area for children to play in? We intend on seeing the Secession Building and Karlskirche, so a little playground time for the little one would be enjoyed.

Didn´t see the playground either, but I was there in winter and there wasn´t many people there. About safety, bear in mind that Vienna scores top hight in life quality rates in Europe; for isntance, I didn´t see any hobos hanging around in all the places I´ve been there.
