The 1920s in Vienna were a period of radical social experiments, especially at the hands of the social-democratic city government. Among its achievements was the Karl-Marx-Hof social housing complex. It's still there and a wonderful exhibition in what was the communal laundry explores the history...More

This apartment house is over 1 KM in length and contain 1,387 apartments small in size. It is an interesting project from 1927 that provided an answer for workers with no place to live. As the labor was strong at the time it was called...More

This public housing complex, is a huge court yard. A lot of the flats have balconies. The communal space has mature trees, a playground, sports hall and kindergarten. I thought it was beautiful-grand and human. It was a short ride to the end of the...More

Barely mentioned in tourist info or guidebooks but this is well worth the trip and easily found - facing you as you exit the station at Heiligenstadt Line 4. You can just wander around the gardens and pathways admiring the well maintained and distinctive design...More

This was mentioned to me in passing, and when I was in Vienna took the U-Bahn out to see it. Right across from the station, massive architecturally significant apartment complex built in 1927-30 (renamed during the Nazi era), name returned after the war, recently renovated,...More

Shortly after WW1 the city of Vienna (no more emperors then) starting building major public/social housing complexes. The Karl marx Hof is the most impressive one, and the other one is the Rabenhof in the 3rd district. This really helped in the 1920's- and still...More

I'm a bit of a fan of landmark architecture and I'm a History teacher so, with my 24 hour metro pass I decided to make the effort of heading out to the end of line 4 to see this housing complex. At over 1km long,...More

This is a very interesting building in 'the red Vienna' which nicely depicts the social building all over the town. Worth seeing.

Very interesting to visit and see how this monument to socialism lives now. I would say, socialism in its best :-)

Vienna’s poshest green leafy suburb is also its most
romantic hotspot. Walk up Grinzinger Strasse with its
many historic wine taverns. The tops of nearby
Nussberg and Reisenberg hills make for great strolls
through the vineyards, and the occasional discovery of
a hidden winery. Popular local weekend hangouts are
Neustift am Walde with even more great wine taverns,
and café restaurant Cobenzl, up on Cobenzl hill –
