The area
Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

Without a shadow of a doubt one of the most beautiful square's in Vienna and is a must go destination if you're planning a holiday to this most beautiful of city's.
This square ,originally located outside the Roman fortification walls of Vindabone ,this is the name of the Roman military camp that went on to become the city of Vienna.
Irish monks arrived much later and established Schottenkirche ( Scottish Church ) and Schottenstift ( Scottish Monastery ) ,Ireland at the time was known as New Scotland and the square developed around the beautiful religious buildings .
Freyung later became an important market square throughout the 16th,17th & 18th century and during the 19th century beautiful bank buildings were added ,the famous Austria Brunnen was added in 1846 from designs from architect Ludwig Schwanthaler ,this is most definitely the finest square to view some of the most beautiful buildings in the city and befitting such a great square is proliferated with great cafés,bars and restaurants.
Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Freyung is one of the entrances to the center of Vienna, surely not as well known as others but not without charm. The area is full of small palaces of the bourgeoisie. Schottenkirche Church, Freyung shopping street or Am Hof Square with Mariensäule sculpture are some of the highlights. It is worth wandering around the Jewish quarter located in the surrounding area.
Probably one of the least touristic spots in the center and that we liked the most.

Close to the Hofburg there is another lovely square of Vienna the Freyung.
In the middle of the square there is another fountain - Vienna has a lot of these that's for sure - it is called Austria- Brunnen - Austria Fountain .. I guess its obvious the symbolism.
Around the square the are several palaces - since it was close to the Hofburg , obviously palaces were built in this area. Just to mention a few of those palaces : Harrach, Fernstel , etc.
The Scottish Monastery is also to be found the in this square- with an interesting history behind it.
During the holidays - Eastern and Christmas - in the square there are thematic markets.
It can be very interesting - has some landmarks in it ... go and check it out.

The Freyung Passage is an elegant shopping arcade built in the 19th century as part of the Ferstel Palace. The arcade links the Herrengasse with the Freyung historic square. The arcade was designed by architect Heinrich von Ferstel in 1860. The marble-clad passage with pilasters and vaulted ceiling is lined with luxury stores. There is a wonderful chocolate shop and the Cafe Central which was in the 19th century the favorite meeting place of the literary Jung-Wien movement. Many notable socialists, including Trotsky, were also regulars here.

Probably not on your top ten list of places or things to see in Vienna but this Square was feet from our apartment and we walked by it each day. A Small Square and a Nice Statue Fountain it is in three tiers and drops water down to the bottom basin

Worth a quick peek or stop for a coffee if you are strolling round the inner City or Ringstrasse. In the 16th and 17th century, lots of private palaces sprang up here, and in nearby Rennngasse, to be close to the Hoffburg. Most are now converted into shops and cafes (including the famous Café Central). There is also a fountain was erected in honour of Emperor Ferdinand I - the four figures at the base symbolize the major rivers of the empire.

Freyung is a triangular shaped public square in Vienna. It is just northwest of Am Hof Square. Its a neat place to spend a bit of time during trips to Vienna.
Historically the square was just beyond the walls of a Roman fortification at this location. Irish monks arrived in the 12th century to build a monastery here. This later became the Baroque style Schottenkirche, which you can see at Freyung Square.
Other interesting sightseeing at Freyung Square includes the Austriabrunnen (Austrian Fountain), Bank Austria Kunstforum for art exhibitions as well as palaces which line the square, offering nice architectural viewing. These include the Palais Kinsky and Palais Ferstel, where you can find a Neo-Renaissance indoor passage lined with cafes and shops.

Freyung is a medieval square in Vienna that is shaped like a triangle. Haha. A monastery, the Schottenkloster, was built here by monks from Ireland and Scotland and gave the square its historical significance. The square is surround by many examples of fine baroque architecture due to the proximity to Hofburg. Many aristocrats build their residences here, which later on become a financial center as banks moved their headquarters into the area. So if you’re in Vienna to admire the many noble palaces, do take a quick walk on Freyung and admire the architecture of each Palais as you walk the medieval foundations of Vienna.
There’s a organic farm market that takes places at Freyung Square. I only manage to see one shop during my visit, perhaps it was on the wrong day. But the sight of blueberries, strawberries and cherries bring much delight to my eyes. This place would come alive during Christmas and my guide mentioned that the Christmas Market that is put up here is pretty good, with one of the largest nativity scenes in Austria. Should come back in winter to check it out.

One of the smaller and quieter of Vienna's Christmas markets situated in an old neighbourhood and surrounded by grand buildings and the Schottenkirche.
More traditional than some of the bigger markets and selling lots of homemade handicraft goods that weren't seen elsewhere but also with a Vienna souvenir stand.
Just a few steps further on was the Am Hof Christmas market which was primarily food stalls selling all kinds of produce, again many items not seen elsewhere.
Felt these markets were an authentic experience worth a visit just off the usual tourist trail.

Freyung is an old neighborhood in central Vienna with palatial homes and the Schottenkirche (Scottish church) which dates back to the mid-12th century. The area is a farmers’ market that becomes the “Altwiener Christkindlmarkt” during the pre-Christmas Advent season. It is a short walk from the big Christmas market at Rathaus (city hall) along the Ringstrasse to Schottengasse to Freyung where the crowds are smaller and the atmosphere a bit quieter. The wooden booths have handicrafts, Christmas decorations, candles, textiles, sausages, spice cakes and gluhwein (hot mulled wine) in a mug which you can keep as a souvenir or return to get your deposit back. There is also a touristy City of Vienna souvenir stand with postcards, magnets, T-shirts, etc.
Along the rear of booths backing onto the street is a 150-foot long nativity scene mural based on an1830 painting by Austrian artist Josef Ritter von Führich. On the other side of this street is the farm market with meats, cheeses and wicker baskets among their offerings. .All around are retail stores, selling berets, religious items and antiques plus a Billa grocery store.
