About
The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

If your pocket doesn't allow going inside museum then you may explore outside area, both sides of Belvedre, good photos. Its very big, you will have to walk a lot, worth it though.Visited February 2023Written 27 March 2023
- Irina AMoscow, Russia8 contributionsBelvedere Museum - Highlight on Vienna Family Visit! We were there in December 2021 during our Christmas holidays in Vienna; with two kids (4 and 8 year old). The visit was very smooth, although the gallery was rather crowded. We were able to enjoy all of the Klimt's famous masterpieces, which is the key highlight of this gallery. The kids liked the experience as well as us. The building itself is also inspiring and historic. By nice weather you can enjoy walking in the garden around the Belvedere. The place to visit - a must see in Vienna!Thank you for your feedback! - JJJC_Family810 contributionsIt’s hard not to visit the place that exhibits The KissWe have umbrellas, mugs, postcards, books, magnets, etc. with the image of “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt. So obviously we really like it. When we previously came to Vienna and due to ill health missed seeing it at the Belvedere, it was a disappointment to say the least. This trip that was not going to happen. Obviously, the museums, two of them have a lot more to see than just “The Kiss”, including a whole bunch of other Klimt works. They have an excellent and diverse collection with many of your favorite artists. As palaces, there are, of course, still some rooms that are beautiful, in themselves and even if there were no pictures to ogle, would make the Belvedere a prime place to visit in Vienna. Beauty, in any form, is worth seeing. In fact, I just took a quick look at pics online and after seeing the rooms, I have decided I want to go back. The gardens at ground level are not amazing, but from the windows on the upper floor of the palace there is a view of the various designs which are fairly interesting. It’s no Versailles, but ok. We saw another building with some religious art. It was small, but pretty good. We were just getting there before the palace closed. So we ran through, but it was enough. We did not see Belvedere 21, the modern art, film and music museum in a building nearby. Nor did we see the privy, botanical or alpine gardens. We have only so much time and energy. The Belvedere is absolutely worth seeing if you are an art lover and again, should be of interest for the beautiful rooms, themselves. If you are on a short stay, let’s say two to three days, and you have absolutely no interest in art, it might very well be forgone to see the Hofburg, Schonbrunn Palace with its gardens and zoo, cathedral, other churches, city museum, etc. You really need a minimum of four to five days to do Vienna right and that’s not seeing everything worth seeing.Thank you for your feedback! - CharlieRogers584 contributionsThe Upper Belvedere is worth a visit but pass on the LowerThe art on display at the Upper Belvedere is worth a visit and includes a great collection of works by Gustav Klimt, which really shows the breadth of his talent and works. There's more to Klimt than The Kiss! At the Lower Belvedere the art collection on display is much smaller than I anticipated and is comprised of lesser known works and artists (no masterpieces). I was very disappointed with it and I don't believe its worth the additional entry fee. The Lower does include a collection of Medieval art in the former stables. This collection is quite good (though small) and may appeal to those who are fans of religious art from this era. In my view it's a shame that an additional entry fee is charged for the Lower, because it's not worth the additional cost.Thank you for your feedback! We are happy that you enjoyed your visit at the Upper Belvedere. With our permanent collection and our temporary exhibitions in Lower Belvedere and Belvedere 21, we try to offer a wide range of art and hope to meet everybody’s taste. However, we are sorry that our exhibitions at the Lower Belvedere did not manage to fascinate you.Written 31 July 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited July 2023Written 29 July 2023
- Martin HStockport, United Kingdom675 contributionsPlan your visit before you turn upMost people aim for just the higher palace with its Klimts. Nothing wrong with this but you might have to wait for some time to get in unless you have prebooked. The lower palace however is equally worth a visit if (particularly mediaeval) art is your thing and this doesn't need prebooking as the number are a lot less. its slightly awkward to get to n public transport and even from the nearest tram stop ( Line 18) it is not actually signed - if you have some from the centre look slightly uphill and look for the coaches.Thank you for your feedback! - product-of-canadaToronto, Canada2,389 contributionsWorth it for outside aloneThis review is based on looking at the palace from outside. I did not go inside. This was amazing on a nice weather day. Many great photos to be had. Too 'palaced'-out to be paying yet another fee to see the interior. Palace-fatigue! It is really worth checking out for the outside perspective. Great photos to be had.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 September 2023
- David SSlovenska Bistrica, Slovenia83 contributionsHistory of austrian peintingsUpper belvedere: Beautiful building on the outside. But inside building (not paintings) let ne down. Was expecting more original room details, from furniture onwards. The paintings collection and time travel through art development is great. For quick walk trough or if you are skilled and educational artist, one hour is good. But as an curious turist, taje three hours. Lower belverdere : a disappointment to me Waste of time and money. Again poctures of not so famous artists. I left with mixed feelings. Should go for Upper only. Botyom line: Klimt was a master. I am impressed by his Lady in black. I don't remember the painting's title, but you will know which i mean. P.s. If you arrive by train to Vienna main Station, the Belverdere is just some 15 mins walk away.Thank you for your feedback! We are happy that you enjoyed the exhibitons in the Upper Belvedere. In our second location, the Lower Belvedere, we show temporary exhibitions. This gives us the opportunity to offer a wide range of art and something for every taste. However, we regret that these exhibitions were not able to convince you.Written 17 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 October 2023
- badinage01Belper, United Kingdom26 contributionsPre Xmas visitOrdered tickets online the night before which saved the hassle of quite a queue outside the palace to purchase tickets. On-line tickets can be downloaded to Apple wallet too which was convenient. Queued for 5 mins to enter but it was all quite efficient and although lots of people about it didn’t feel too oppressive when inside. Note the audio guide is an extra €5 Euros each but was quite informative when viewing the art works. A very pleasant couple of hours spent admiring some incredible pieces of art. Cafe is lovely too with huge selection of traditional cakes at reasonable prices. Only down side was the Xmas market was not what we had expected. Certainly not as nice as some of the others we had visited.Thank you for your feedback! - Marc KMunich, Germany583 contributionsFor friends of Art definitely a mustGetting there is very easy. The Tram D is passing by from the city center. Tickets are available online or at the container next to the castle. We got a ticket adult pP 19€ which is quite expensive and the Staff wasn’t too friendly, but they take credit cards. The castle and exhibition- stunning! If you want to read and reflect everything a day is not enough and we visited only the upper Belvedere. Of course the different or each period of Art which are shown might not touch everyone’s interest, but you will find your favorite. During this time of the year a small Christmas market is next to the Castle and the garden is reduced in its beauty. Definitely a must on your visit in this city.Thank you for your feedback! Skip the lower Belvedere and go to the upper one. The exhibitions were not interesting and not worth the admission price. One thing that was great was the cafe and the apfel strudel, try it.

Old palace they converted into a museum. Grand marble staircase entrance, has a cafe inside as well. It is also included in Vienna pass. Klimt’s “The kiss” is most impressive along with several others of his there as well

A beautiful building filled with amazing sculputres and paintings. Let the art sink in, take your time and enjoy it!
Extra cudos to the staff in the restaurant, loved the champagne!
Only negative was a private guide who made nasty remarks of other visitors, bossed around, yelled at the visitors, and stood infront of the Kiss for a long time. For some reason he wanted to be the center of attention -not in a pleasent way.
Kisses to you all!

Nicely laid out museum across multiple floors. Well signposted and has lifts for accessiblity. Good amount of paintings and sculptures, with photography allowed (no flash). Some weird exhibits, mix of modern art and medieval paintings/sculptures in 2 separate buildings.

There are actually three museums here, one of which, Belvedere 21 Museum of Contemporary Art, is in a different architectural and historic context. The Upper Belvedere is the most impressive of the three as it is a magnificent palace with a first class art gallery within its walls. Most people will probably find that the late 19th and early 20th century art is the most fascinating. That is reinforced by the throng of people taking their own pictures in front of Klimt and Co. The history and events which have happend in the palace are well explained. The ground floor cafe is entirely acceptable.
By contrast the Lower Belvedere is visually a less impressive place set at the bottom of the hill and rather dark inside, possibly to protect the pictures. Currently an exhibition of Ukrainian art is on show (partially, no doubt, to avoid the hazards of its home in Kjiv). Much else besides - and fewer visitors.

The museum is very popular with tourists especially large tour groups which are impossible to avoid. Most rooms especially the Klimt rooms are always very crowded with tourists. The gallery has had a complete thematic rehang in the last few years under the new director. Major works by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele are the main attraction. The setting with sweeping views across the city are worthwhile.

It's an amazing collection. If you're a fan of art then it's well worth a visit. You'll be able to see "The Kiss" in person, which is Klimt's masterpiece.
If you don't like art, then don't bother. But if you don't like art... Vienna might not be the place to visit.
