About
The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

    Worth it for outside alone
This review is based on looking at the palace from outside. I did not go inside. This was amazing on a nice weather day. Many great photos to be had. Too 'palaced'-out to be paying yet another fee to see the interior. Palace-fatigue! It is really worth checking out for the outside perspective. Great photos to be had.

    History of austrian peintings
Upper belvedere: Beautiful building on the outside. But inside building (not paintings) let ne down. Was expecting more original room details, from furniture onwards. The paintings collection and time travel through art development is great. For quick walk trough or if you are skilled and educational artist, one hour is good. But as an curious turist, taje three hours. Lower belverdere : a disappointment to me Waste of time and money. Again poctures of not so famous artists. I left with mixed feelings. Should go for Upper only. Botyom line: Klimt was a master. I am impressed by his Lady in black. I don't remember the painting's title, but you will know which i mean. P.s. If you arrive by train to Vienna main Station, the Belverdere is just some 15 mins walk away.
Thank you for your feedback! We are happy that you enjoyed the exhibitons in the Upper Belvedere. In our second location, the Lower Belvedere, we show temporary exhibitions. This gives us the opportunity to offer a wide range of art and something for every taste. However, we regret that these exhibitions were not able to convince you.

    Pre Xmas visit
Ordered tickets online the night before which saved the hassle of quite a queue outside the palace to purchase tickets. On-line tickets can be downloaded to Apple wallet too which was convenient. Queued for 5 mins to enter but it was all quite efficient and although lots of people about it didn’t feel too oppressive when inside. Note the audio guide is an extra €5 Euros each but was quite informative when viewing the art works. A very pleasant couple of hours spent admiring some incredible pieces of art. Cafe is lovely too with huge selection of traditional cakes at reasonable prices. Only down side was the Xmas market was not what we had expected. Certainly not as nice as some of the others we had visited.
Thank you for your feedback! We are happy that you enjoyed your visit to the Upper Belvedere.

For friends of Art definitely a must
Getting there is very easy. The Tram D is passing by from the city center. Tickets are available online or at the container next to the castle. We got a ticket adult pP 19€ which is quite expensive and the Staff wasn’t too friendly, but they take credit cards. The castle and exhibition- stunning! If you want to read and reflect everything a day is not enough and we visited only the upper Belvedere. Of course the different or each period of Art which are shown might not touch everyone’s interest, but you will find your favorite. During this time of the year a small Christmas market is next to the Castle and the garden is reduced in its beauty. Definitely a must on your visit in this city.

    Beautiful
Excellent Klimt exhibits. Beautiful building with lovely views of the surrounding palace grounds. In our case, a heavy snowfall transformed the gardens before our eyes. Reservations advised, as outdoor waiting area was miserable in the cold, wet weather.

    Art Museum in a Palace
The Belvedere is divided into 3 buildings of which we visited 2 of them, the Upper and Lower Belvedere. Both of these were former palaces that are now art museums. Of the two buildings, the Upper Belvedere is by far the more impressive one with a more beautiful interior and more famous artwork, including a collection by Gustav Klimt. We purchased our tickets online, which do require picking a time slot. The time slot is only for the Upper Belvedere while Lower Belvedere can be visited at your leisure on the same day. There were lockers in both palaces. In November/December, there is a Christmas market in front of Upper Belvedere which unfortunately obscured the view of the palace. At the end of our visit, we did stop by the cafe in Lower Belvedere, which was a welcome break.

    Come early!
Not a huge but rather interesting collection. The upper palace is known for its Klimt collection, and it certainly is worth visiting. However, reserve your time spot online for an earlier visit because large groups of tourists and schoolchildren groups overwhelm the space and you won't enjoy the paintings. Also do not miss the basement collection of early art!

    The Kiss
Was recommended to have a look by our taxi driver and glad we took his advice. Spent hours wandering around and The Kiss was a great painting by an Austrian Master. Need to get to the painting early as it is busy. Thoroughly enjoyed this Museum

    Prince Eugene's delight
There are actually three museums here, one of which, Belvedere 21 Museum of Contemporary Art, is in a different architectural and historic context. The Upper Belvedere is the most impressive of the three as it is a magnificent palace with a first class art gallery within its walls. Most people will probably find that the late 19th and early 20th century art is the most fascinating. That is reinforced by the throng of people taking their own pictures in front of Klimt and Co. The history and events which have happend in the palace are well explained. The ground floor cafe is entirely acceptable. By contrast the Lower Belvedere is visually a less impressive place set at the bottom of the hill and rather dark inside, possibly to protect the pictures. Currently an exhibition of Ukrainian art is on show (partially, no doubt, to avoid the hazards of its home in Kjiv). Much else besides - and fewer visitors.
Thank you for your feedback! We are happy that you enjoyed your visit.

We booked for 11am but upon arriving at 1050 we found two long queues with no signs and very few staff. The staff that were there were very flustered and overwhelmed, expect to hear a lot of:

"Which queue do I need to be in?"
"Am I in the right queue?"
"Excuse me the queue is here"
"Oh you need to be in the right hand side queue"

Because there are absolutely no signs. Don't worry though, if you are still craving more queues when you get inside you will have to check any medium and above bags you are carrying - for which there is another 15minute queue for that. You are then free to enjoy the incredibly packed venue.

Quite dissapointing.

Must visit while being in Vienna. My recommendation is to come in the early morning as after 11am the crowd is starting. The only thing which can be improved is the customer service and the fact that even when you buy the ticket on-line you still need to spend time in ticket office to get a real ticket. Not customer oriented and not ecological approach.

The gardens and surroundings of the upper and lower belvedere buildings are beautiful and we'll worth the visit. In terms of art, it is quiet poor value.

Unless you explicitly want to see the kiss by Klimt, or the temporary exhibitions, then the €15 entry fee for each area is a bit of a grab. If you have no problem with that for a bite of the city, then it's ok, but it should cover both houses.

If you're a tourist, just get the team, come for the gardens, and leave.

Went to Belvedere Museum with my wife. We bought tickets to Upper Belvedere - where the Klimt’s, Schiele’s and much of the impressionist paintings are housed - in advance.

The wait to buy tickets can be quite long, so buy in advance but must specify the 15 minute time frame at which you will show up.

The palace is beautiful with incredible art painted on many of the main ceilings. The art work is excellent (all but the Medieval section - I was not a fan). The staff were very helpful.

After the Leopold, this is my favorite museum in Vienna.

So overall I had a good visit to Upper Belvedere (Friday night when it stays open until 9). Lower Belvedere was closed for a new exhibition and we weren’t allowed to walk through the park as it was after dark, had to go around (20 minutes walk), which was disappointing but I understand. I’d definitely recommend going during the day if you like palace gardens, but I’d just spent a long time at Schoenberg so I was sated on that account.

Nice to see all the Klimpts and other works, decently presented. My disappointment was after paying an extra €5 for the audio guide, about half the time it simply repeated what was printed on the card by the work. Which I can read much faster than listen to. However, sometimes it would have different or expanded content, which I found interesting. It was very annoying to read a card, then punch in the audio number and not be sure if I was getting different information I wanted to wait for or if I was just hearing exactly what I’d just read. So that was frustrating but everything else was fine.

We were fortunate to visit in quiet January so had uninterrupted views of the palace and paintings. A great shop with a wide range of prices for beautiful Klimt pictures and souvenirs. Lovely cafe with chandeliers and views over the park- we shared a piece of sachertorte and coffee. Lockers to leave your backpacks etc 1 euro which you get back at the end of your stay. The tram stopped at the top of the road - we found the 24 hour pass (8 euros) very useful and it covers you for 24 hours from when you buy it so can cover part of 2 days.

We visited Belvedere on Christmas day.
Outside gardens were beautiful decorated and there was also a Christmas market.
We visited only Upper Belvedere, very impressive palace. But we mostly enjoyed
the art collection and especially Klimt's.
It wasn't very crowdy and there was a calm atmosphere.
I recommend:
1) Time slot e-tickets (avoid queues)
2)For art lovers don't miss Upper Belvedere (in my opinion focus on it)
3)Take a walk on beautiful gardens
4)Shop a Klimt's souvenir from museum shop

Well this is ridiculous. And disappointing. I visited the Belvedere in Summer 2017 and had such a wonderful time. Back here now on New Year’s eve and I was so excited to bring my fiancé here to see ‘The Kiss’. I made sure to book my timed ticket in advance but I may as well not have bothered. We arrived at the entrance at our designated time to see 1.5 queues snaking around the corner, no signage as to which queue to join or what they mean and no clue as to who to ask for help as the visitor assistants blend in with the crowds. What kind of (lack of) organization is this? What has happened here? When you’re pressed for time visiting a city in only a couple of days this is not the kind of confusing welcome you want to receive. My fiancé suggested I write a review of this very disappointing experience. I’ve got all the time in the world to do so now I’m stuck in a queue.

If you want to see Gustav Klimt's masterpiece "The Kiss" then there isn't any other way to experience it than by visiting the Upper Belvedere. It's a beautiful building and the rest of the art selection is pretty good. There are more of Klimt's pieces, and various other paintings and sculptures (including a Rodin sculpture of Eve in the same room as "The Kiss").

You can buy your tickets online to avoid the queues. If you want to take lots of photos of The Kiss before that room gets busy (it gets progressively busier as the day goes on) then I would recommend arriving at 9 and going straight to that room. Take as many photos as you want, and then enjoy the rest of the collection at your leisure.

The food is also pretty good. I grabbed a sandwich and coffee, I was not disappointed.

I separately wrote a review for the Lower Belvedere - but please take note, if you're going to the Upper don't bother with the Lower. Unless you're seeing something specific then it's really not worth your time (see my review on that specific page if you want).

I visited only Upper Belvedere and took a walk trough the gardens. They are lovely even in winter time, I can imagine they must be beautiful during spring and summer. Building itself is stunning on the outside and on the inside. As in any other Vienna attraction, I recommend going there early in the morning before the crowds. We purchased tickets online, and had no trouble scanning them on cellphone. My advice is go directly to see the Kiss, before the crowds come, so you can better enjoy this masterpiece. I am a huge Klimt lover, and painting didn't disappoint me. Afterwards you can slowly explore museum at your own pace.
