In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

- Stephane JL'Union, France165 contributionsConcert in the gold room... feeling the vibesConcert by the SchlossCapell orchestra, Fritz Kircher as soloist violine, December 9th at 20h00. Very nice experience, very surprising and a must do. First, the place is beautiful : one of the best concert hall in the world with perfect acoustics. Second, we were in the second row, so VERY close to the orchestra, we could see the powder coming off the violine archer when the musicians played. We could see all the discrete communications between the musicians, their looks, their complicity : I highly recommend the first rows, even though it force you to use the head and may end in an uncomfortable position... it pays off ! The orchestra was small : 20 musicians. 9 violines, 3 violas, 2 cellos, 1 contrabass, 2 oboes, 2 horns ans 1 harpsichord. We had in first part a Mozart symphony N°29 (K201) which was a perfect starter - perfectly executed - and the four seasons of Vivaldi in second part. The soloist Fritz Kircher was very good, no doubt. The orchestra was very precise altogether, with a beautiful execution. But I have been particularly impressed by the second violine, a very talented, concentrated woman, whose attention to the first violine was jubilatoire to watch ! We could feel the vibes of the music in all our body because we were so close. My wife who was not so interested in classical music was totally impressed and seduced !Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023
- Aaron MSaint Louis, Missouri108 contributionsBach and BeethovenOne of the world's great concert halls. We had tickets to see the Orchester Wiener Akademie and the Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien perform Bach and sat on the floor. We then noticed Hadelich was playing the Beethoven violin concerto a few hours later and bought tickets on the balcony for that. They also had a Haydn later that night. So, watch for multiple performances of completely different programs the same day. The sound in the hall is unworldly beautiful:every note crisp and clean, no muddled sounds. Hearing a vocal performance there was like nothing I've experienced elsewhere. On the balcony, the sound loses a touch of its crispness, but it's still incredible. The seats on the floor are all flat one behind the other, there is no change in height between rows. So, if you are petite or have a very tall person in front of you sightlines may be hampered, though we had no issues: but something to consider when ordering.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 December 2023
- Allison LLymm, United Kingdom12 contributionsGreat tour, great value for moneyGreat tour of the building, performance halls and practice areas. Very informative guide. Not to be missed on a visit to Vienna if you are interested in architecture /classical music. Nowhere to store bags or coats so don't overdress or take too much baggage with you!! Great value for money (10euro pp)Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 January 2024
- Seeking True QualityEurope4,836 contributionsA superb guided tour to learn about the MusikvereinAs we were admiring this famous building from all sides, my wife spotted that a guided tour was about to begin! The starting point of the tour was the magnificent entrance hall of the Musikverein. We learned a great number of facts about the Musical Society and the construction of the building. It was opened in 1870. The most striking for us was the fact that there are about 800 concerts in this building each year! Upstairs, we first visited the smaller Brahms concert hall. We were told that there are concerts for children there regularly! What a wise decision to educate future lovers of classical music! Of course, the focal point of the guided tour was the Golden Concert Hall in its full grandeur. Each January 1st we watch the live broadcast of the Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker from here. But we did not know that there are actually three of those concerts: on December 30th, 31st and January 1st! Because of the acoustics, all of the decoration is wooden, even if it looks like marble or metal: the columns, the statues, the panels on the wall, even the organ pipes! There is a small free space between the fake wooden ceiling and the actual ceiling, also to enhance the acoustics (the actual pipes of the organ are behind the fake ones). We also did not know that there is a ballroom directly beneath the Golden Hall and it is believed that it also contributes to the fantastic acoustical experience. We could take pictures in the Golden Hall (in other parts of the building taking pictures was forbidden). Our tour ended with a visit to one of the four newest concert halls of the Musikverein, the Metal Hall. Along with the Glass Hall, the Stone Hall and the Wooden Hall it is located directly beneath the little square in front of the entrance. We would like to warmheartedly recommend this unforgettable tour to everyone!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024
- hlmh466 contributionsGreat concert experienceWent for a Mozart / Vivaldi concert on a Wed night. Need to leave jackets at the closet place with a fee. Water bottles not allowed into the hall. Photos during concert not allowed. But the performance was good. Should experience it if you are in Vienna.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 March 2024
- jamieba32London, United Kingdom646 contributionsCouldn't recommend this place enoughUnbelievably good Mozart concert at this stunning venue - The Golden Hall. I have seen a performance at a church before and there are many venues across the city with Mozart and other classical and opera concerts. However this one is really special. It's the most famous place to hear and see it and the classical orchestra and opera singers - especially the lady are absolutely amazing. Almost got goosebumps. They even dress up in traditional costume and the conductor is a bit of a comedian too . Make sure if you come to Vienna you add this to the things to do.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 April 2024
- 988LizVPortland, Oregon11 contributionsWonderful performance and venue - but totally obstructed viewBeautiful concert hall and wonderful performance by the Vienna Philharmonic. However, our seats were very disappointing, especially for 336 Euros. We paid 168 Euros each for two seats in parterre lodge 8. One of our seats was in row 3 of the box and we could not see the stage or performers at all. Instead we sat looking at a column and the back of the heads of the people in rows 1 and 2 in the next box forward.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- caroline2Paris, France528 contributionsExcellent guided tour!!We went for a guided tour in English not a concert. The tour was very informative and done by a super friendly young lady always ready to answer any questions. The magnificent Golden Hall was a nice experience as we sat while the guide spoke. We were allowed to take photos in this particular hall but not elsewhere. We also saw one the newest concert halls which is located underground. Would love to come back for a concert!!!Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 August 2024

If, like us, you couldn’t get tickets to a performance in the main hall, standing room might be your only option to hear the amazing acoustics. If you know what you are in for, you won’t be disappointed. Other reviewers have mentioned the queue, the coat check, etc. all I could say is, yes, it is uncomfortable, and hot. And crowded. Quite a few people left at intermission ( so did we, unfortunately as our friends just couldn’t hack it), so I wonder whether the strategy should be to arrive for the second half?

Spectacular venue with world-class performances. A must-see/hear when in Vienna. A couple of notes... Do not be late. Performances start on time and you will not be allowed in until intermission if you are late. Also, you are expected to be quiet, respectful and very still while watching the performance. This was a bit new for me and not what I have experienced in other concerts. They take this very seriously as a sign of respect for the musicians. This is not to discourage anyone from going but each country has it's own vibe and I find it helpful to know these kinds of things so I'm sharing them. Absolute must-see when in Vienna.

We took the tour on the last day of the year (so the day before the NY concert). We had a very good English speaking guide (loud voice, good explanation, clear answers to our questions) who guided us in 45 min through the building showing the different rooms while telling us the history of the building. Pictures were only allowed in one room, which was luckily the golden hall. The flowers of the NY concert where already there (also because they gave the same concert on NY evening and the day before). Ticket price is only 10 euros which makes the visit really worth it.

The atmosphere and decoration are fantastic as a concert house.
However, extremely bad experience as we paid €98 for a classic concert and they sit us 3 rows from the back . The music acoustic was extremely bad , back there. To make things worst , after mid break, all the general public with much lower paying customer €38 plus can free officially to come up and sit in front of you if there are available sits ( officially approved free for all arrangement ). Makes me feel like a fool to pay so much.

The Golden Hall is really pretty. You needed to pay (€4,2) to get program notes. The concert was great. The acoustics was not as amazing as I thought to be. The ticket price (I sat at the most backwards Galerie) was slightly overpriced for me, but it is ok if you want to experience Viennese classical music concert. Personally I would recommend to go to Wiener Konzerthaus next time if you want a better classical music concert experience. They offer higher quality concerts from artists with higher standings, cheaper ticket prices, less crowded, the audience is more cultured. Only that there is no magnificent interior design as the Golden Hall in Musikverein.

The music was nice, the room was very beautiful. The main complaint is...at least 5 people directed us where we should check our coats. Which we planned to keep on. But, after so many people told us to check our coats, fine...we'll check our coats.
That'll be 4 euros please (or something like that).
The tickets were about 80 euros each for a symphony concert. If the venue wanted 82 euros each, they should have just charged that...

Don’t get duped in to thinking you’re going to attend a concert in the main concert hall. We paid 75 Euros each , the concert was in the Brahms-Saal which was in effectively a small hall with little real wow factor and to add insult to injury the 75 Euro balcony seats were very restricted to the point of hardly any view of the stage and musicians at all. Nothing wrong with the musician’s performance at all , but left thinking we had been completely misled , that we’d have been better off spending the money on a nice meal and just buying the cd. A real tourist trap offering not very good value for money at all.Thoroughly disappointed.

The interior of the hall is golden and fancy, which attracted lots of tourists (including me) to come and enjoy the Mozart Orchestra performance. However, you can only have a better listening experience if you sit in the front only, for those you are sitting at the back row, the experience is not that impressive. It’s free to get a CD when you buy tickets online, maybe that’s why they offer a CD for you to listen at home with your own hi fi or speaker.

I wanted to give this experience 5 stars, as my husband and I enjoyed the concert immensely- once it got started. But the run-up to actually sitting in our seats was soooo stressful. We got there about 40 minutes before the start time hoping to get a drink in the bar first. On entering the (extremely hot) lobby area we were surrounded by hundreds of people and had to wait in a VERY long queue to collect our tickets (booked online in our hotel and the only ticket options were print at home or collect from box office). We queued for so long that we didn't have time for a drink (and frankly didn't fancy fighting our way through hoards of people to get to the bar). Then, when we finally got our tickets and went to go in we were told we had to go back to the (mobbed) foyer and queue up again to check our coats in! So they are making patrons waste time queueing up to pay €1.70 to check in 2 coats instead of allowing patrons to keep their coats and use the time to spend €15(ish) on 2 drinks in the bar! Madness. The concert itself was very good. And I liked the fact that the seats were tiered so you still had a good view (we were Category B pricing in row 29).

If we only get to go to a concert at one of these, should we choose Wiener Staatsope or Musikverein?
Written 22 March 2020
Hey! It depends on which kind of music you prefer: if you like opera the Staatsoper is the best place, if you prefer instrumental music I would recommend you the Musikverein, though also at the opera house there is a good orchestra. I personally love the architecture and atmosphere at the Staatsoper, it's a Neorenaissance building and one of the most important projects of the Ring (a main street in Vienna); but also the Musikverein is a really beautiful building. So just decide on which program you prefer!

Hi, Christine. What would you like to know about this attraction? The tour is only 35 mins long and you are not allowed to take any photos even without flash? I wanted to take a photo or two as my elderly mother watches the New Year Concert and it would be lovely to show her images?

Hi
We went to a lunchtime concert and I was able to take pictures with my phone, these were not the best quality but they did show the opulence of the hall. Sadly we did not do the tour so I don't know what the rules were for this
