About
Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten, the second oldest porcelain manufactory in Europe, was founded in 1718. The “white gold” from Vienna has been lovingly moulded and shaped, glazed and painted by hand ever since; every single item of finest Augarten porcelain is just unique now as it was then. Design and artistic value reflect collaboration with generations of well-known artists. Augarten upholds this tradition, working closely with some of the most respected designers of our day.

Address
Neighbourhood: Leopoldstadt
Welcome to one of Vienna’s trendiest quarters. The second district has witnessed a turbulent ride, from medieval swamp to vibrant Jewish quarter, from pleasure ground for the noble and humble to current hip residence and workplace of Vienna’s creative crowd. Cross the Danube Canal from the city centre and take in life on Taborstrasse with its mix of old townhouses, churches, theatres, discount shops and ethnic restaurants. Head for Augarten via Karmelitermarkt, Leopoldstadt’s trendy marketplace. Baroque Augarten itself hosts a bizarre mix of manicured hedges and flowerbeds in front of a colossal World War II defense tower, the publicly accessible 300-year-old Augarten porcelain manufactory, the palatial boarding school and funky concert hall of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the modern art museum TBA21. At its opposite corner, The Prater not only houses the Giant Ferris Wheel but blends a bustling amusement park with lush woodland, perfect for a bike tour. Further east is the old derby racing ground of Krieau.

The Porcelain Manufacture Augarten is the second oldest one in Europe. Since it is a niche subject, you should have at least some prior interest in it. The museum is small, but takes you through various styles, giving you some insight into the different ways porcelain has been used as decoration and functional appliance. For a more in depth experience, make sure to attend a guided tour. Attached to the museum you will find a shop with their products, though their flagship store is located in the inner city of Vienna. Their creations make good gifts to bring home, but make sure you have some spare change. These are high quality pieces of artwork, which is reflected in the price.

Nice surroundings and a large shop to buy expensive and fragile objects. Passed by and entered the museum, too. Not much additional value if you are not special porcelain enthusiast.

However, we learned a few porcelain related facts. Never know if we should need that knowledge some day...

We enjoyed our visit to Porcelain Manufaktur very much. We stayed in a hotel nearby and I read that they have morning tours of the production facilities. So, off we went. It is located in a nice old palace building inside a beautiful park. We had a pleasant stroll around it afterwards. The tour was for about 1 hour, it was mostly in German but the tour guide was also translating some info to English for my mom. We were shown all stages of porcelain making process, how each peace of complex sets is made, the colouring, etc. It was very interesting! First time on such tour for me. After completing it, the prices for different porcelain pieces in the entrance hall, did not look so high any longer - you really see how much work and art goes into each creation. The museum was interesting. We liked the old part better than the new one. We also bought some porcelain pieces to take home - to remember this beautiful place during our breakfasts :).
There is a very good restaurant attached to the porcelain factory. We had lunch there after the tour and it was really tasty and pleasant.
Augarten Porcelain Factory was not one attraction I planned on visiting in Vienna and suddenly it turned out to be a great and very interesting half-day trip and something I will definitely remember.

I was not able to go on a tour of the factory, but I have enjoyed the small museum of porcelain and the exhibition about the Congress of Vienna. The museum staff was very friendly and helpful.
The restaurant, however, was a disappointment. After sitting there for over 15 minutes without so much as a 'Hello' (not to mention ordering drinks or seeing the menu), we decided to go to a friendlier place.

Dear Elain, We are very sorry about the inconvenience caused. The truth is that 2 of our service staff fell ill that day. Please accept our sincere apologies. If you are visiting Vienna the next time, we would be very proud to welcome you again at Café Restaurant Augarten and to convince you of our heartfelt hospitality. Kind regards from Augarten

We happened to notice information about the Porcelain Manufactory Augarten as a small sidebar on the city map given to us at our hotel (oldest in Vienna, The Hotel Stefanie--a wonderful place, small lobby yet elegant and serene, quiet spacious rooms, great beds, terrific breakfast, gracious and friendly staff.) The Stefanie is on Tabor Strasse, within easy walking distance to the Augarten. I own a small piece of their porcelain, (given to me in 1964 by a family I was privileged to live with during a year as a student in Wien), so I was thrilled that morning tours are offered by the manufactory. Our guide spoke perfect English and the tour gave a detailed up-close story of how the lovely products are made, from blending the basic natural materials to the skilled molding, firing, finishing and hand painting. It's an amazing process and a privilege to see the behind-the- scenes handwork. We were astounded to watch painters working with tiny brushes right next to our tour group. My husband and I agree that this was a highlight of our trip to Wien and a joy for those who love understanding the skill and artistry involved in making functional art such as Augarten creates. I e-mailed them upon my return to the U.S. with questions about my specific piece (an ashtray), giving the coded numbers on the back. They responded quickly and politely with the name of the artist who created my individual piece so that I now have its full provenance. Fit this tour in if possible when you visit Vienna! The grounds are nice, the building historic, the tour fabulous!

I am extremely happy I went here. It’s not something you would stumble across by accident. It’s still in Vienna but not in a touristy area. I love porcelain and have a collection of different kinds, although I was not familiar with Augarten. And the visit was all I hoped it would be. But...

It was expensive for what you get. You have two options. The museum by itself (7 euro) or the museum plus factory tour (17 euro). While I do not speak German, my daughter does, and at no point were we made aware that the factory tour was conducted in German until it started. They do have an audio guide with English voice over at certain stops. But it was clear that what was being told the group was FAR more than what was given me in the audio guide. Luckily my daughter could fill me in on some, but she didn’t know what I did or did not hear. But I still enjoyed it. For the most part I could get the gist of what the guide was talking about during the tour, and it was still a treat to see the production areas and tools. But I did feel it wasn’t a great value for 20 euro for the two of us.

The museum had bilingual signage but I feel it failed to provide a lot of info. It took a while to realize that a progressive timeline of the museum required one to start upstairs. But done in any order it really just showcases a beautiful range of products and how styles changed over time. Again I loved the exhibits, but it’s a small “museum” and at 7 euro was one of the more expensive specialty museum entrance fees we paid and it doesn’t give you a lot.

Worth noting, if you don’t know Augarten Porzelan, it’s very high quality. And very expensive. This is not your average gift shop. Even with a display of seconds offered at half price, you won’t walk out without spending a good deal of money. A (beautiful) bisque snowflake ornament was 29 euro. Worth every penny considering what it is, but not a tourist souvenir shop. Plan your wallet accordingly.

My mother, in the Viennese tradition, received a full service of Augarten porcelain for her wedding. We, too, were presented small pieces for our wedding from our Austrian relatives. I have always loved the service, but was somewhat stymied by the extraordinary pricing. Until I went on the tour.

There are 30 staff creating these beautiful pieces. 15 for the molding/firing and 15 to hand paint each piece.

The tour itself takes about an hour. There are headsets available for non-German speakers; our tour guide spoke fluent English and was easily able to answer my questions. If you have a love of porcelain, go!

The tour lasts about 1,5 hours. You get a good understanding of how this manufactory works by going through the premises and listening about their working processes. Our guide, Benjamin, was particularly good, willing to answer quite specific questions. What we loved most was that the tour was not focused on the history, but covered in details the current life of this place.

I did not do the tour as it is only in the morning. The porcelain factory is housed in the remnants of the old Augarten palace, it is a short walk from the Tabor str metro. The restaurant is very good. In the shop the staff are very helpful but the displays of the famous porcelain are extremely limited and disappointing. I collect Augarten and have around 30 animal figurines, I asked where the figurines were and they were mainly stored in big drawers! Granted, no-one minded my looking through them but they were practically jumbled up together. Nor did the factory have a complete collection of the figures they still produce, and certainly none that I was looking for. Mainly unpainted blanc de chine items. Prices at the factory shop are very high indeed. Augarten IS expensive, and one of the finest porcelain factories in the world, but the shop prices were far higher than any I had come across before. Although buying porcelain off Ebay or any other auction site, is a risk, if you collect Augarten and know what you are looking at, you will find much better prices that way. Do not go to the Augarten museum expecting to see a really good range of their figures, nor expect to buy at reasonable prices.

My wife is very keen on pottery, so our visit here was absolutely incredible, as she was able to provide deeper insights above and beyond the descriptions on the wall plaques. Yes, the gift shop is pricey if you consider only the porcelain, but there are other items there as well - cash only, though!

Restaurant is fairly priced and offered us a great lunch.
