We first did a guided tour of the opera house, and based on this were excited to purchase day-of performance standing room tickets for a show that evening.

TOUR
Tickets are usually released about 4 weeks in advance depending on their rehearsal schedule (I think check around 15th of the month before, which is when the schedule is apparently released).

Tour groups are capped to 35 people. We were lucky in that we were towards the back of the group booked for our time slot, which meant that we were part of the second group, which was a bit smaller with about 20-25 people.

I really enjoyed the tour. Our guide (I think his name was Manuel) was great. Coming from someone who doesn’t know anything about opera or ballet, I thought he provided a good description of architecture, opera/composers, the theatre and stage productions. He was easy to understand and engaging. Whilst we were definitely moving at pace, it didn’t feel overly rushed and we still could take pictures in between without being herded off to the next room due to the next group. He offered plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

I’ve read some people suggest to skip the tour and just see the opera house via a performance. I guess we were lucky in that we had a good tour experience, but I can definitely appreciate from what I saw how some groups may feel rushed and may not have gotten as much from their tour if they were in a larger group. The tour allows you to visit some parts of the opera house that you otherwise wouldn’t if you were just watching a performance (e.g. emperor’s box).

PERFORMANCE
Each day, a set number (?100 or ?150) tickets are set aside for the standing rooms. There are different standing room options. Parterre is the box slightly above ground floor level, in the centre - best view for ballet, which is what was showing on our day. Tickets were 18 Euro each.

Tickets available at the from the “Standing Room” sign on the side of the opera house, and are released 90 minutes before the performance. Recommend you get there at a bit earlier. We arrived 2 hours before the performance and there were already approx. 50 people in line waiting. One ticket per person, so you must all be present to purchase.

Standing room tickets are assigned, so it’s not a “first come first serve” basis regarding position in the standing room once you’re in, but obviously the earlier you arrive, the closer to the front of the standing room your tickets will be.

There are quite a few of you in the standing room, and it is quite squashed. It gets very warm during the performance because there’s so many of you packed into a small space. You have a screen in front to share between two people for opera translations). Note that even though it was cold outside when we went, you aren’t allowed into the performance with jackets and must cloak them. This was fortunate though because as I said, it got very warm.

We also dressed very casually after a day out sight seeing and felt under-dressed and a bit out of place. Most others in the standing room were also in more casual attire, presumably because they too were mainly tourists deciding on the day to buy tickets, and then heading straight to the show.

As the tickets to the opera were way too expensive, and my true aim is to see the famous opera house from the inside, I joined a guided tour that took place during the day at designated time slots.

I was anxious to book the tour a few months in advance in case the slots ran out, but the bookings were only open one month before. The tour is offered in many languages. Within one time slot, there were at least 5 groups of 30 or so participants and each group had their own guide. This is to say that the place was quite crowded and you have the feeling that the administrators were just trying to fit in as many people as they can. There are two sides to the coin - you can say they are trying not to cause disappointment to tourists, but in so doing, this might dilute the visitor’s experience. Or it could be just a case of maximizing profits.

Anyway, I got to see the magnificent interiors. The guide did a good job explaining each room and answering queries. It was particularly interesting to watch on video how they convert the hall to a ballroom for dancing during the annual debutante’s ball. Our group were also fortunate enough to tour while an opera singer was rehearsing her part, and so that added some realism to the experience!

Visiting the Vienna state opera was a magical experience! Even as someone who isn’t an opera fan and had never attended a show before, I truly appreciate the guided tour. It covered the main areas and provided a glimpse into the Vienna opera history.

The interior is elegant and prestigious, making it a must visit for opera lovers and those wanting to explore Vienna’s rich culture. I highly recommend buying tickets only from authorised sellers, as street vendors often charge higher prices.

LOVED seeing the ballet here. It was so fun if you enjoy ballet. We showed up about 15 minutes early, checked our coats, and found our seats. The venue itself is a definite highlight. I am so glad we saw the entire space. We sat REALLY high up but it was totally fine.

We saw Sleeping Beauty, and I was glad I read the description of the show online in advance so I could loosely follow the story as it went. It wasnt the most exceptional performance, but felt like I was in a cool venue seeing high quality art!

I got tickets through the direct website via lottery. I picked the night i wanted to go and gave price parameters, and got an email about a month later. You can probably get tickets last minute as there were people offering them outside the venue, but I am not sure about pricing. There were standing room only seats which I personally would have hated. Make sure if you want to sit you have a seat.

I got an email the day of our event to 'buy food for intermission'. Our ballet had 2 25 minute intermissions, and there were places you could get drinks and food. Around the atrium floor (on each level), there are small tables with seats and numbers. If you pre-order food you get to skip the line and walk directly to a table which will have your food and drinks on it. We did not do this, and I was glad once I saw the setup. Nobody was monitoring the tables and I would have felt weird drinking or eating anything that was just sitting there. If you stand and exit quickly from your seats, the line is fast and there are empty tables or benches you can enjoy a drink at.

Bathroom line was surprisingly manageable...

I have a gluten allergy and there was definitely no gluten free food. To me, the food looked gross I wouldn't have eaten any of that -- definitely recommend eating before you go.

Vienna Opera is not only famous for those who love music. Beautiful and huge construction, it was almost completely destroyed in 1945. The Vienna State Opera was reopened after 10 years of extensive reforms. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful opera theatres in the world. Even for those who do not appreciate the genre should be seen and appreciated. It has an intense programming, with more than 60 shows per year and not just opera. It is possible to make guided visits that are worth it. To get tickets to any show it is necessary to make reservations months in advance. It is possible, however and depending on the evening program, to buy tickets at the theater ticket office from a certain time. I strongly recommend.

We purchased tickets in advance for a tour of the opera building (unfortunately we weren't able to see a performance). The tour was very informative and gave us a chance to see most of the interior of the building. The main theater is very impressive, with richly decorated boxes and ceiling. Other areas of the opera house were also worth seeing, and our guide was happy to answer questions. The tour lasted right about an hour. We were happy to have tickets in advance since we didn't have to wait outside in a long, hot, line, but it did appear that there were same-day tickets also available for the tour.

Were on Hoffmann's Tales in December 2024. Very long performance 4 hours, 2 half-hour breaks. Full of giant hall, small and not very comfortable chairs, especially for such a long performance. Dubbing in 3 languages in the back of the seat in front of you (English, German, French). The sets are very creative and beautiful, create an unrealistic atmosphere at the performance itself. Pity you can't take pictures. The execution of the games is beyond praise.
Tickets were bought a week before the performance already from merchants (the site was not for obvious reasons), at the entrance offered tickets for 25 euros - I understand for standing seats.
The opera is big, three times bigger than Kiev. The interior decoration of the opera hall is not as luxurious as in Kiev, less gilding and decorative elements, despite being built in the same Renaissance style. Before the camping, I had long and painfully chosen an outfit and searched all the websites for the best way to go to the Vienna Opera. So I decided to describe the audience - everyone tries to dress beautifully, everyone in their understanding : someone came in gold shoes and evening dress, someone wore just a beautiful jacket or a sparkly blouse/skirt, everyone in their style and understanding. The room is warm - so it won't be cold with bare shoulders. Prices in the buffet, which I also read about in full nonsense, : sandwiches - 5-6 euros, wine, champagne - 6-9 euros, was of course and 19 euros glass.
And as usual, queues at the buffet, apparently on every continent.

The tickets for the Staatsoper events are usually sold out very quickly so we had to buy them online well in advance.
The Staatsoper's entrance, central hall, and staircase are all designed to be impressive. We were simply left speechless! After entering the auditorium and finding our seats, we were surprised by a nice innovation. Each of us had a personal screen attached to the back of the seat in front of us, with lyrics translated into a chosen language.
Die Entführung aus dem Serail is certainly the most popular of Mozart's early operas - he was only 26 when it premiered in 1782 in the Burgtheater. It is a Singspiel, with a lot of spoken texts! Interestingly, in this production, each of the five roles (except the Pasha) is performed by two people - one singer for the musical part and one actor who interprets the text. They wear identical costumes!
The plot is utopistic and naive, everyone knows too well that the Ottoman Turks of the XVIII. century would not behave like that, especially in male-female relations. Yes, it was written during the Enlightenment era...
But what actually matters, the music is fantastic!

Opera is one of the emblems of the city and therefore you should not go through the city without visiting the State Opera building. If you are not a foresighted person and you have not booked tickets to see a function, another option is to take a guided tour (€15). Available in several languages. In groups. It is advisable to book it a few days in advance to avoid queues and have secured space. The guided tour was fantastic because they explained a lot of things and we could see the opera from the inside. One of the things to do in Vienna!

The experience of the guided tour was very positive, with our guide who told anecdotes about the Theater and gave us the opportunity to visit, in addition to the hall, also a considerable number of concessions and break rooms, each decorated differently . Unfortunately, the theater was almost entirely destroyed by bombing during the Second World War and what could not be recovered was rebuilt after the conflict in the style of the 1950s. This means that the theater is a mixture of styles and that there aren't many original parts. However, it is a building that has hosted performances, characters and artists that have remained in the history of music, so listening to some stories and taking a look around certainly doesn't hurt. If you are not an opera enthusiast, simply book a guided tour (there are in all languages, even Italian), preferably in the days before from the theater's official ticket office or from the website. If, however, you want to attend a show, there are also very cheap tickets (from around 20 Euros up) which however must be purchased on official channels. Be wary of people dressed as Mozart outside the theater who try to sell you tickets: they are touts and often not even in good faith, since they could give you fake tickets or tickets for shows that have already passed.
