Neighbourhood: Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.

Vienna has many quaint little squares, one being Albertinaplatz at the end of the southern wing of Hofburg Palace and the Albertina Museum. You'll also find a attractive fountain monument built into the wall below the museum, a nice equestrian statue of Archduke Albrecht as well as a handful of war memorial sculptures directly on the square.
Cafe Mozart and Cafe Sacher can also be visited at Albertinaplatz. You'll also find the Vienna Tourist Information Centre along the meeting place for several city walking and bus tours.
Adjacent to Albertinaplatz is the back of the Vienna State Opera House, another important historic attraction that you might find yourself visiting when in the area. It is all rather charming and worth spending a bit of time to enjoy during time spent in Vienna.

Albertinaplatz is opposite Hotel Sacher and the Vienna Opera House in the heart of Innere Stadt and is the location of the Albertina Art Museum. The square was unveiled in 1934 and was originally known as Albrechplatz. It is a pleasant square which is dominated by the Albertina Museum and although not necessarily a must see it is worth a look whilst in the area.

The albertina square is surrounded by the Vienna Opera house, Albertina museum and many many coffeehouse.
In the middle of AlbertinaPlatz is the walk-in monument sculpture and on the left, two carved white blocks of granite part of "the gate of violence" sculpture. Both monuments stand against war and Fascism and commemorate all the victims.
The cast statue of Emperor Jospeh II standing as a guard over Albertina platz.

Albertinaplatz is a square that is so good to visit, there are many squares in this most beautiful of city's, all packed with great architecture and Albertinaplatz is no different, its central location is awesome, the architecture is outstanding especially the Vienna Opera House and Albertina Museum, absolutely stunning structures especially when illuminated at night.
Besides the stunning architecture you have some interesting statues and war memorials and a cool water feature, add to this the innumerable pubs, bars and restaurants not just on the square but in the streets leading into the square.
Most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.

Albertinaplatz is the intersection of 6 streets. It received its name only in 1934 after the names of the museum of the same name. The dominant feature of the square is the bastion, on which stands an equestrian monument to Archduke Albrecht. In fact, these are the remains of a bastion demolished along with the Vienna fortress wall during the grandiose reconstruction of Vienna at the beginning of the reign of Franz Joseph I. The square is surrounded by palaces and former apartment buildings. If you have time, you can visit the famous cafe "Mozart". There used to be a monument to the great composer here, but in 1953 it was moved to the Burggarten. The Albrecht Fountain also reminds of the old imperial Vienna. Less noticeable, but historically significant is the memorial to the victims of war and fascism by sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka, erected relatively recently in 1988. It stands on the site of the infamous Philipp Hof house, in whose bomb shelter on March 12, 1945, about 300 residents of Vienna suffocated or boiled from boiling water by firefighters extinguishing a fire. Some of the corpses were removed, the rest remained buried under the square formed at the demolition site. However, this is not only a reminder of the bombing on March 12, 1945, but also a reminder of the Anschluss on March 12, 1938, when the people of Vienna welcomed their compatriot (and Vienna resident) Hitler. The figure of a Jew on all fours recalls the shameful episode when the Viennese forced Jews to wash away anti-Nazi slogans from the sidewalks of the city. Formally, this part of the square has been a square named after the former mayor of Vienna, Helmut Zilk, who supported the construction of the memorial since 2009. However, I'm afraid even the Viennese themselves can't make out where what square is, not like us tourists.

There are larger and busier squares in Vienna, but this small square is where the Albertina museum is located, as well as an impressive sculpture, The Gate of Violence.

Around 400 people died in the cellar of a building on this square during the Second World war. The memorials here are against war and fascism and are truly moving, especially as they were so well explained by our walking tour guide.
I was particularly moved by the sculpture of the person cleaning the ground, as some Jews were forced to do during the war.
These memorials could do with explanations in languages other than German. But they are still worth visiting.

As part of our Vienna city center walk, we spent some time in Albertina square, which is close to other attractions such as Graben street, Vienna State Opera, and Hofburg Palace. The Albertina Square is surrounded by gorgeous building structures such as Vienna State Opera House, Albertina museum, and some great Vienna coffee houses. In the middle of Albertina Square, behind Vienna State Opera, is the walk-in monument sculpture: “The Monument Against War and Fascism”, which was unveiled in 1988 to preserve the sad memory of the darkest times in the history of Austria. The monument is dedicated to all victims of war and fascism. It is truly a sad reminder of those dark days in human history. As part of your city walk, recommend to spend some time in Albertina Square and its monument in Vienna.

Skip the ‘new’ art on the -1 floor - some guy making ‘art’ with blood and guts, it’s terrible. However, Monet and Picasso, among many other very well known artists are well represented on the second and third floors. A great variety of works - set aside at least 3 hours or more if you want to absorb the experience properly.
